Today, the biggest developments come from the Vuhledar direction.
Here, Russians tried desperately to fully close their encirclement and capture the entire Ukrainian contingent in Vuhledar, but were forced to engage in intense urban fighting and go through the town instead of around it. Ukrainians also set up a new line of defense, leaving Russians to be stuck in the soon-to-arrive autumn mud after having won a bitter victory.
As Russians had crossed the river from the west and advanced on Vuhledar’s eastern flanks from Vodiane, Russians were close to taking the town into complete encirclement, trapping Ukrainian forces inside. Russians were targeting the only Ukrainian supply lines into the city with drones and artillery strikes as well, severely deteriorating the situation for Ukrainian defenders. The only options left for Ukrainians were either to push Russians out of Vuhledar’s flanks and reestablish ground lines of communication with the town, or for the Ukrainian 72nd mechanized brigade to conduct a withdrawal.
Pushing Russian forces out of their attempted encirclement of Vuhledar was a significant challenge for Ukraine. The Ukrainian brigades on Vuhledar’s flanks were largely unmechanized, lacking the necessary firepower to launch a direct assault on Russian positions. Western weapon deliveries were limited and needed to be prioritized for other areas of the front, and Ukraine couldn’t divert mechanized units from those sectors to reinforce Vuhledar. Ukrainian soldiers reported that Russian Spetsnaz special forces and specialized drone units were supporting the infantry assaults on Vuhledar, attacking from three sides and maintaining constant artillery fire. With compromised supply lines and increasing pressure, the Ukrainians' only option was to withdraw from the town. They prioritized saving the veteran 72nd mechanized brigade over holding Vuhledar, which had already been reduced to ruins.
The Ukrainian rifle brigades and battalions on the flanks, skilled in defensive operations, were assigned to hold the line against Russian forces attempting to fully encircle Vuhledar. If we look at the topographic map, we can see that the Russians had to cross multiple gullies, lowlands, and rivers to complete the encirclement. Meanwhile, the Ukrainians held the high ground on the opposing hill ridges, giving them an advantage in repelling Russian attacks. They also maintained control over the western part of coal mine number three to prevent the Russians from advancing along the ridge toward Bohoiavlenka, which would have jeopardized the rescue operation.
Ukrainians released numerous videos showing their successful defense against Russian mechanized attacks on Vuhledar’s eastern flanks, where they destroyed many Russian infantry fighting vehicles using FPV drones. One video showed a Russian BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicle attempting to assault Ukrainian positions on the western flank. Ukrainian forces responded with their own BMP-2, opening fire and killing the Russian crew. The footage concludes with Ukrainian soldiers capturing the Russian vehicle and driving it back to their lines, waving a Ukrainian flag to avoid being mistaken for the enemy.
The original uncensored combat footage of the Russian-Ukrainian BMP duel can be found on our Telegram channel through the link in the description.
As Ukrainians retreated from Vuhledar, Russian drone footage showed them targeting Ukrainian vehicles used in the evacuation. However, most strikes were on stationary targets, suggesting Ukrainian troops had already evacuated into the tree lines. When the footage showed strikes on moving Ukrainian vehicles, it pixelated and cut out before impact, indicating Ukrainians were using electronic warfare to disrupt Russian drone attacks. Russians also targeted Ukrainian evacuation routes with nighttime artillery barrages, attempting to hit troops moving undetected through the tree lines. Despite these efforts, Russians were unable to fully encircle Vuhledar due to strong Ukrainian resistance on the flanks and the logistical challenge of having their nearest supply hubs 18 to 30 kilometers away, with no hardened roads for easier access.

One of the russian objectives for capturing Vuhledar was to protect a railroad link passing near the town.
I have to wonder if they can even consider that objective accomplished, given the few kilometers gained in over two years of assaults, and the ability of ukrainians to strike further than at the start of the war.
Slava Ukraini!🇺🇦
True that. Palyanitsia makes a lot of Russian WW1 tactical goals moot. But they are still moving a few kilometers closer and can portray it as a win, and obviously it prolongs the war... Ukraine is not going to win just by defending.
@@CellGames2006That is not entirely true. The aggressive opponent can burn itself out and simply collapse.
@@goiterlanternbase eg Ali v. Foreman.
@@CellGames2006 like in Kursk?
Russia is trying to spin this like a huge victory. Keep in mind, Vuhledar had a pre-invasion population of 14000 people. 14K, not 140K. And it took them well over two years to capture it while suffering thousands of casulties and hundreds of vehicles. Now imagine their losses if they tried to take Kyiv with almost a 3M strong population. I wonder how long Russia can sustain these kinds of losses, every month has had higher daily average losses from the previous year. September 2022 RU had 354 average daily losses, September 2023 it was 500, September 2024 it's at 1271.
800+ visually confirmed tank / vehicle losses from Russia over the 2 years vrs Vuhledar... Crazy.
It was still heavily fortified, so razing it is an important step for Orcistan
@@KMerse1 and now they have worse ahead of them.
@@evulclown Bro's source is Oryx
@@stephaniewilson3955 Tbh I've not seen heavy fortifications from the ukrainians, yet.
I heard Russian losses in Vuhledar amounts to 6% of everything they lost this war.
No wonder they treat it like taking Berlin despite it being a town of pre war pop of less than 15k
Please don't downplay the importance of Vuhledar. While its not catastrophic for Ukraine... it was an extremely important and, more importantly, an extremely DEFENDIBLE position.
To give you an idea of how well it was positioned to be defended, it had:
(1) the dozens of hardened 5-10 story "citadels" of Vuhledar itself -->
(2) followed by the coal mine/tailings mound immediately flanking it northeast (Coal Mine #1) -->
(3) which is protected by the city of Vodyane to the north -->
(4) which itself is protected by the Pivdennodonbaska 3 (Coal Mine #3) with a 20-STORY "watch" tower overlooking/guarding the town itself... -->
(5) with a hardened industrial water treatment plant to the southwest of Vuhledar
(6) with the town of Prechystivka guarding from flanking/penetrating 3-5 miles west of that
(7) all surrounded by nothing but OPEN FIELDS FOR MILES!
(8) and all that bounded/protected by a RIVER/WATER feature as a giant long moat to its south before you can even think of assaulting Vuhledar itself!
And don't forget about the MINES themselves, providing essentially bombardment-proof storage bunkers that are literally on the FRONT LINES and can theoretically store an infinite amount of supplies/food/munitions/etc. that can't be targeted. Could even set up a full top of the line trauma unit down there if you wanted.
And while an extremely large amount of Russian armored vehicles/military materiel were lost over the course of the past 2 years while attempting to take Vuhledar... the ACTUAL ASSAULTS that ended up taking Vuhledar were ABSURDLY SMALL in comparison. Instead of dozens upon dozens of armored vehicles delivering hundreds upon hundreds of Russian soldiers over and over and over again to finally break through and take Vuhledar... they did it with almost unbelievably small numbers of troops/materiel. Literally, less than half a dozen armored vehicles were responsible for the initial taking of most of those numbered defense positions listed above (#1 through 8). ITS LITERALLY ABSURD that Ukrainian leadership allowed this... it was COMPLETELY AVOIDABLE... plus they had excess troops/materiel waiting/sitting elsewhere and literally doing NOTHING at the time! I have no clue why they were moved to protect/keep this. Literally, a handful of battalions could have stopped this entire thing from happening. SMH, I smell traitors. And Ukrainian leadership NEEDS to be much, much, much more AWARE of major things like this going on in their battlefield! Lord, please help them.
@@JohnDorian-j7x I get it it's not perfect, the local scope of things is rather tragic. This is opposite of the front movement direction we would hope for.
But just like many fronts of this war it reminds me mostly of WW1, but it's common thing.
Massive battles for places you would not know even existed before...
It just feels like any of the "battle of hill XXX" history had. Some place was considered strategically important, but in the end it did not matter as much

People should understand that they're always at 1 to 5 odds and the 🇷🇺 are bringing in 🇰🇵, Africans and 🇨🇳 while 🇺🇦 only has a few foreign troops. It's even less than 5000 by now.
That is a testament to how good Western strategies and equipment are but it can only go so far without full support and we're only barely giving them what we can produce while stabilizing the economy.
The most capable defensive and offensive nation right now is 🇺🇦 and we cannot squander that.
FULL SUPPORT OR LOSE A GOOD ALLY WITH AN EXPERIENCED ARMY. It's not about 🇷🇺 anymore. Its losing out on good and highly capable people with more than years of combat experience extending towards Crimea and knows the in and outs of Soviet doctrines.
Kurdistan was the "most capable defensive and offensive nation" and they were abandoned by a guy who wants to be president. We should assume the same indifference to strategic allies may be in play for Ukraine. The EU may need to step up for the next four years if America misunderstands the geopolitical opportunity to remove a despotic superpower from the world map next month. Back when Gorbachev took command, there was much talk of a "Peace dividend" that Putin shut down. Let us not screw up the second chance to redeploy defense funds towards more constructive, productive pursuits.
Pretty sure the west is literally using ukraine to test out their weapons and learn from the war, and to exhaust russian resources.
IF they wanted this war to end, they would not support ukraine since by supporting ukraine, it would just prolong the conflict causing more deaths for more sides,
@@williamjacobs yeahhhh but to be fair Kurdish forces actively engage with a nato member, Turkey, so I feel it is inevitable that they would be somewhat abandoned despite being a thorn in Syria. Ukraine is different, but I see your point and pray that they continue to be supported.
Stop watching this nonsense. Ukraine just lost 22.000 men in Kursk and counting. Two generations of men whiped out for US foreign policy.

The Russian rate of returns from increasing signing bonuses is diminishing. Every linear increase in troop signups requires exponentially higher signup bonuses. Exponential grown is… unsustainable in this context. The Kremlin was nervous about the first mobilization (they were right to be). They are terrified about another one (they are right to be).
If Ukraine can give them no choice but to mobilize it will break Russia. Not just militarily.
Doesn't Ukraine drag people out of their homes and buses? At this point, 99% of Enlistees are just people who do not want to be there and got drafted.
The economy will probably first.
@@wishusknight3009 Yeah, the war and sanctions are only accelerating the pre-existing problems with the economy and the economy will be what destroys them. But it’s a massive acceleration.
I wonder how many actually end up getting their bonus. Seeing common reports of the levels Russia goes to to stop any payouts I would wage the percentage is quite low.
For instance, Russia repeatedly moves troops into combat zones but does not change their status to reflect it, so they get no danger money.
They also list known dead troops as "missing in combat" thus avoiding death benefit payouts.
I am an idiot
but isn't exponential growth unsustainable in all contexts ?

Considering the fact that Ukraine is the second biggest country in Europe after Russia (603.000 sqkm), ruffly twice the size of Italy, it will take the russians decades to conquer the whole of Ukraine, if they don´t in some way manage to gear up their present snail tempo.

And there's the difference between Ukraine and Russia. Vuhledar has no strategic importance. Even on the tactical level, it only has limited importance. Nothing changed. But Russia was willing to take exorbitant losses for a minor tactical win, while Ukraine prioritised saving people. I'd say it's an operational win for Ukraine, because Russia cannot step forward now and have to reconstitute losses. Again.
like other regions, they will lose it again in a couple of weeks
Russia did gain a railroad line closer to the Front, and easier replenishment of the Southern Front through that, we'll see how much that'll change things,
With the way things are going I doubt it's going to do much
Ukraine is winning by advancing backwards!
Ukrainian defence works very much like a Viking shield wall. Each position forms with others to provide interlocking defence. Vuhledar was a part of a greater thing and when one shield goes the rest are at risk of going too. Luckily they have had time to form another line but they lose tactical control of Russian supply lines by doing so. I can't pretend it's not a loss but they were defending ruins and they need to keep experienced formations in the fight, not fighting to the last man or any of that stupid nonsense. Bottom line, they did well to hold it for as long as they did but it's simply time to leave there.
Ukraine could strike at the supply routes and ammunition or fuel depots in the rear positions ...@@MickyChowMein69
