Derrick is a big reason why I fell back in love with finding new music. I’ve spent the last couple years recycling the same playlists/artists until I came across him.
It was very nice to hear Derrick in a podcast setting again. Rek's hair being described as Mob Psycho, was ✨🤌🏻✨. Dumb is such a great host, he also has that pleasant voice like they described Derrick's being.
i was actually so pleasently surprised when Derrick brough up NewJeans. I find their music to be ACTUALLY GOOD and the whole creative team is just top tier (in my humble opinion). I don't think I've ever seen a kpop group who planned and executed every single detail as well as them tbh. It goes way deeper than the members' amazing visuals, vocals and dance skills. I think they changed the game with both their tracks and MV's. One of the things I like the most is their amazing taste in music. You'd find their youngest member (16 y.o) saying her favourite album of all times is "Getz/Gilberto", a bossa nova album from 1964, and that's crazy.
This whole conversation was really on point and thought provoking. Derrick is so interesting, I relate to a lot of what he says. Especially speakers, I'm so picky about sound I need some of those acid-free-trip speakers 😂 Also, I'm in the UK, and I've been listening since Cool and Calm. Stop being so darn quiet musically, okay?! You've always been great. Nuff love 🖤
Great episode Dumb. It's so wholesome when Rek is well behaved and asks good questions and is attentive. It's contrary to his public persona, but still him at the end of the day. Excited for future episodes especially when you have cool guests like Derrick on. Much love
I really enjoyed this conversation. I’ve been following my own taste in music since the 90s and have been digging deeper into KPop for a few years now and found Derrick’s opinions match how I have felt about the industry. I’ll add his pod too.
Consider how much effort it takes to be knowledgeable in all types of music. Derrick has really done his homework across the board and it shows. Majority of people choose not to discover new music beyond their 30's (proven by studies) mainly due to feeling bombarded by all the new music and having to keep up with emerging artists as others fade away.
Is Derrick the smartest guy any of you guys know?? He seems it, not a coincidence he's not American. Criminally slept on: Shawn Smith (Satchel, Brad), Kings X, Shack (Liverpool band), Schaus (NY, I think).
There's a part here where bullcut guy says Asians have usually bad taste making music, he says it almost like a question and a statement. And I'm like dude. U don't know music if u think that. Like come out of ur shelter and broaden ur horizons
Rek's anime reference just flew completely over Dumb's head lmao

This guy is like Asian Otto man, the bus driver from the simpsons who always has a music headset on that is connected to a Walkman and knows his music

This censoring is insufferable
Bts Clickfarm 😂😂😂
Dip!!!!
appreciate this conversation, but the ever-present colonized and imperialist frame of reference towards Asian artists makes me sad.
