I have had the distinct honor and privilege to play accompaniment to Procol Harum in 1997, 2004 and 2005. First at the Lyric Opera House and the next two at Star Light Theater. I was the concert pianist for the Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra. Gary Brooker's voice was spell binding and haunting at the same time. This song always invoked powerful emotions, we routinely had violinists in tears as they played. Gary Brookers passing in Feb. was a tragic blow to the world of music. He was a great composer, musician and person. I will miss him. He was a great friend.
You were honoured to meet him,and of course be on stage with for me the best band of all time..I concur with your comments on Gary my favourite person in music a great performer with a wonderful sense of humour.I have seen them 8 times live,5 with orchestra and I wish it was more.I envy you your memories.
If there is a god then Gary Brooker lead singer for procal Harum will be sat on his right hand for all the pleasure he gave to millions of good musical fans
Millys, the gentleman singing the song introduced it to the world in 1967. This video was recorded in 2006. So 39 years passed by until this performance. Many people, including myself, were absolutely amazed how wonderful his voice was. He sounded better in 2006 than he did in 1967! This version of the song mixed in with a full orchestra WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. This, my dear is a genuine MASTERPIECE !!!!!
I have listened to the original hundreds of times in my 52 years on this dusty little ball. As amazing as that version is, this version completely swamps the original. Gary's voice is like a fine wine, his age has only made it exponentially better. His voice literally brings tears to my eyes, yet a smile is always dancing across my lips. The music and Gary's voice cut right through my soul and finds all of those inner demons I had locked away and breaks the chains, yet I feel as though I am watching them from a safe height lifted by angels wings. I never finish this song not feeling taxed, yet knowing those dragons, those demons have been subdued for another day... Great reaction 😊
I totally agree, I ran right out and bought their single 45 vinyl as soon as it hit the states.. still have it. Gary's voice to me has matured to the point of insanity. You can here the passion in his voice today much more than in 1967. Which to me takes the song to a whole other level. Another one that sounds even better today is Knights In White Satin...Justin Hayward's vocals are unbelievable. I think it's the maturity and passion. Sadly other artists have truly lost their ability to reach those notes and to keep that vibrato for any length of time.
I don't need to copy and paste word for word what people look up on the internet about groups and solo artists. I was raised in the 50's 60's. It was an era of some of the greatest song writers, solo artists and musicians that ever lived. Unlike today with it's fake everything, autotune, computer generated music etc. Gary Brooker was just a long line of song writers and singers that can never be duplicated today. It gives hope that this music will never be lost when I see young people finally discovering what real music sounds like.
You nailed this....however, my 23 year old rock guitarist son listened to this years back and knows most old school stuff VERY well. Guess I just taught him well.....
@@oldschool72 "way older"??? If, as you say you were raised in the 50s and 60s, that gives you a max age of 71 and as I'm 68 don't you think you have exaggerated a tad😉😉😉😉😉
John Lennon and Bruce Springstein considered this to be one of the best songs ever recorded. The chorus gives the performance a fuller sound. A rock classic.
Girl you remind me sooo much of my Mother in her younger days. She's my angel in heaven now. She was beautiful inside and out and you look a lot like her 🤗☺️. So looking at you makes me smile 😁😊😊😘. Stay Blessed🙏🏼
I always enjoy seeing people react to this classic performance of I song I've loved (the best) for54 years. They are in my opinion the finest band ever and I go see them at every opportunity
Gary Brooker “We got named after a cat, a little Burmese Brown ... that was its pedigree name: Procol Harum. It didn’t sound like anything, we didn’t really know what our music was, what box that fit in either. It didn’t fit anywhere, sort of an ambiguous name like that; it did have sort of a Latin sound to it. We found out a couple months later that if we had spelled it right, it would’ve meant "Beyond these things," which is just sort of a happy coincidence. “
As you can see, in addition to the big pop stars, there are performers who are less well-known in the world. But at their concerts the "third eye" opens, a person comes out of the matrix and sees something more than the media-created reality. Most Procol Harum concerts were magical evenings with art. No hookups on stage, no umis, no pawing at each other's appendages and no fireworks. Something magical, in a word.
As a used to be drummer, I loved to jam with this song in the 70s. I wish I had a kit and the physical ability to play it today. But unlike Gary, who got better with age, I fell apart. Good reaction. I could see you feeling this song.
A true dichotomy. One of the greatest and most beautiful pieces of music of all time, filled with classical references. And it's all about a drunken night in the bar trying to pick up some woman.
The studio version of WSOP was released May 16, 1967. It was a smash hit in Great Britain reaching #1 within a month. It was also critically acclaimed by musicians around the world. No less than Beatle John Lennon had the WSOP single playing constantly on the record player installed in the backseat of John's Rolls Royce. On June 1,1967 the Beatles "Summer of Love" soundtrack album Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band was released. What an amazing 2 weeks in music history. I loved your reaction Milly, RNB

It's the name of a cat, a Siamese cat. It's the pedigree name, and it belonged to a friend of ours, just somebody that we used to hang out with when we were forming the band. One day, somebody pulled out the cat's birth certificate and said 'Have a look at this', and the name of the cat was Procol Harum. And somebody else, in fact a chap called Guy Stevens who was quite instrumental in Gary [Brooker, the singer and pianist] and myself getting together in the first place, said, 'Oh, you must call the group Procol Harum'. And we just accepted that. We never even questioned it, never even thought if it was a good name, we just went ahead with that suggestion.
Oh my Special 🌺Milly🌺. That was very nice. This is such a classic tune. And seeing you enjoy this just makes my day. Thank you Great Lady for being the Angel that brings light to my sunshine. I don't say this enough. You are the very best.
Nice to see you again, Mily!! I've enjoyed your reactions before but have been distracted for a while, I guess! Still, I am pleased to be back and thank you for this reaction to a classic Procoll Harum song! If you have not reacted to "Nights In White Satin you will love it. One more song which is right up your alley is a long ten minute song called "Friends of Mr. Cairo" by Jon and Vangelis. The symphonic second half of the song is simply breath-taking! Good luck to you with your channel!!
Thanks so much Mack, a lot have been going on behind the scenes. But I promise to be more consistent starting from tomorrow. I’m glad you are still here with Me on this journey. You are amazing..... thank you 💙. And I’ll definitely check the song out 😉
It is incorrect Latin for 'Beyond these Things'. 'Procol' is not a Latin word. 'Procul Harum' would translate roughly to "The distance of these". The band is allegedly named after a cat.
If you could listen to early Procol Harum repent walpurgis what day were you have in the studio to Beautiful song so if you could listen to it on your own time you love it
There is a hidden question being asked of all of us, in this song, "can you trust me to romance you, that I will not hurt you, but will fill your heart." YOU! Sweet Milly! were responding, "yes" right at the start. I find those that have been hurt many times by so called romancers, are very hesitant (understandable), cannot not respond well, and retreat. Only if you can and have forgiven the takers of your past, can your heart respond as Milly's did.
Same concert, Conquistador, their other Monster hit, completely different instrumentation, but just as deep lyrically. Also you need to find the Denmark National Symphony Orchestra, which is the orchestra here, as they do Dozens of Music and Soundtrack creations as well. They are world renown.
re: A Whiter Shade of Pale - I have to admit that this version is great BUT the orchestra and the choir over shadows the haunting sound of the organ that made it iconic.
