    Great interview! Just to plant a seed here, KDE Plasma already offers all three things that Carl wants out of Cosmic: we have a multi-year major version compatibility guarantee, a flexible framework that can be remixed and customized by not only users but also distributors and OEMs, and people seem pretty content with KDE's leadership these days. :) In case there are any future collaboration opportunities, we're open and friendly!

    It is really gratifying to hear Carl's preference about keyboard layouts... Left of A ("Caps Lock" position) is the one true place for the Control key! :) I encountered this in the wild on an old Sun Sparc workstation in college, and instantly realized that all keyboards should be made this way. Must buy System76 hardware now... Would still be fun to find someone who ships this as the default.
    I'm not sure about Super to the left of spacebar; in my workflow I use Alt/Meta a lot more often than Super while touch-typing, and I like that Super is slightly more difficult to reach, it's more of an investment to interact with the desktop environment than to stay within the current window. Maybe if you're used to the Mac keyboard, it makes sense. But then again, the Mac Command key is not really a super key; it is mixed up with Ctrl for too many functions. In fact, no OS really got the Super key right before Pop!_OS. Extremely logical how, not only is Super always intercepted by the desktop environment, rather the app, but also conversely every desktop-level shortcut involves Super. Whoever thought of Alt F4....

      Yeah, the Pangolin went slightly backwards. The screen now has thinner bezels and 100% sRGB, but still 16 : 9, and actually regressed in terms of refresh rate from 144 hz to 60 hz. It's a shame, because it's no longer a good purchase (and 1080p at 16 inches is a bit not enough pixel dense for me).

    Most productivity apps expect either full screen or a big 16:9 window to fit their layout. Tiling is very inefficient.
    Also, you do window resizing a lot with other windows. Although there are more flexible tilers, it's not enough. Especially in frequent drag & drop workflows.
    Games don't like being resized, period. There are games that will crash if they are forced to resize (Windows blocks resizing if apps declare it).

    • @mmstick
      @mmstick ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most professionals have ultrawide (24:9), double wide (32:9), and multi-monitor workstations. Even if you have one application capable of 16:9, there's still so much wasted space unused by applications in fullscreen. Tiling is very efficient.
      Games run fine on COSMIC and other tiling environments. Select fullscreen mode and it'll use the full screen.

    Just tossing this out there. Im sure it wont be in scope but it just popped in my head. after the keyboard talk. A version of the laptop with no keyboard. some sort of io pin setup or matrix to build my own face plate and attach momentary buttons sliders or pots. Hearing open source hardware just got me thinking. I have a few projects that would take a while to develop for interms of hardware. But if there was a solution that had some sort of features similar to a single board pcb but a BIG BOY! I would toss money at it. Just sayin. I thought of a latte panda but a laptop version with a carved out area for a faceplate of custom buttons. Again just tossin it out there.
    Either way im lookin at system76 for my next purchase I think. Good talk guys.

      @@Euphorya really interesting... Thanks for sharing more.
      Sounds like something system 76 would want to examine. If I worked for system 76 I would ship you a replacement for free with a return label for you to ship back the dead keyboard. I would then ensure we learn why it faiiled (root cause) and then address that issue.
      Once fixed, I might just ship you the new version as a Thx for your time, patience, and extended trust.
      If we needed to be frugal, I would ship a refurbished replacement knowing that later I would ship a new keyboard that has your fix , with a ty card for your contribution.
      This is an opportunity for systen76 to do the right thing for you, future customers, and for themselves. Long tern leadership and value is critical. As a owner (which I'd want to be), I would even do it at my cost if that was the only way... It would be worth it to invest into my company's sustainment... the first 20 years is just that... I'd be excited for the next 20+ and being part of the mission moving forward... Long lasting value and impact...

    I will start by saying I love Rust, Love Elm, Adore a LOT of what they are doing with Cosmic DE (only reason I won't say I love everything is because of the 'floating window across monitors', which I need, but understand 100% the reasoning for them not implementing etc., just saying it isn't for me). So don't take the following wrong.
    Everything he mentions at around 38:30 or from 39:00 39something... it sounds SO DOABLE with KDE/Qt/QML or whatever. It really does not sound like they had those two options of "spend engineering cycles on adapting GNOME or write our own stuff".
    He does say that he would need to write a compositor anyway - and the decision came only after trying everything else first, but idk - it does smell a bit of a not built in house with notes of rewrite it in rust.
    Either way, I do absolutely love what they are doing, as a user and consumer. But I THINK I wouldn't invest in it in the first place if I was in their shoes a couple years ago.

    • @prgnify
      @prgnify ปีที่แล้ว

      OK, at 55:00 he answered in a way it made sense to me: "we are addicted to making stuff" - enough said. Huge respect.

    • @mmstick
      @mmstick ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You would have to be on the engineering team during the formation of COSMIC to understand how each choice was made. There were many prototypes and months of deliberation.
      We needed a GUI toolkit that is easy to work with in Rust, supports the theming mechanisms we planned to implement, and supports all of the Wayland protocols our compositor will be designed around.
      The Qt prototype failed to get off the ground due to the lack of functional Rust bindings. It would require more effort to create bindings for Rust than working on a native Rust library, and the end result wouldn't have been appealing to Rust programmers.
      I was working on the GTK4 prototype, which was being built around Relm4. I joined the Relm4 organization and rewrote its component system during that period. It required forking GTK to implement support for the Wayland layer-shell protocol, but getting those patches merged upstream wasn't making much progress despite 6+ months of effort. They effectively won't accept it until a huge chunk of GTK4 is refactored. It also didn't support fractional scaling, we have no control over theming, it was too difficult to create custom widgets, and the Rust API was far from a first class experience.
      Meanwhile, the iced prototype was much easier to work with. Iced has a lean code base without the decades of technical debt. It was easy to add a custom runtime with the features we needed to iced. It was easy to implement the Wayland protocols we needed. We have full control over the implementation of theming. And we can make a first class application toolkit that's easy to work with in Rust.

      @@mmstick Thank you SO MUCH. I loved the response. I always trusted that there were good reasons, what you just said takes that little bit more off of faith into knowledge of how reasonable the reasoning was.
      Also, as I said, I love what you guys are doing. Not only for Cosmic but for the ecosystem at large as well (iced, rust, Linux ecosystem, you name it).

    The biggest issue with a bunch of system76 laptops IMO is not just using USB-C for charging. I refuse to go back to a barrel jack.

    • @charlesterrell2603
      @charlesterrell2603 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Recently I had a laptop fry its only USB-C port. Suddenly it was impossible to charge using the included USB-C power adapter. Fortunately, it also has a simple DC barrel jack that can tolerate anything between 9v and 20v (at least that's the range I tested). Unfortunately, it's a weird size of barrel jack, rarely included with aftermarket chargers. But I found one! Now it can receive power again.
      To be fair, the frying most likely was due to adding a magnetic plug adapter that often wiggled too much. But that means the USB-C port is too fragile for real-world use. (It's a cheap little Asus, basically a glorified chromebook, marketed for kids to use in the classroom. And no, it does NOT use the typical chromebook barrel jack.)
      So now I prefer charging laptops via barrel jack, preferably the common size that aftermarket power bricks use as a base for plug adapters. Use a very robust regulator circuit with ridiculously loose voltage tolerances. If USB-C power is desirable, embed a chip in an optional "ultralight travel" power cord to negotiate PD voltages. I have one and it works. But on the laptop side it's still a barrel jack.
      I don't know what system76 uses for laptop power.

    I find it strange that in the whole "Why make your own desktop" discussion, he just talked about gnome and its problems without mentioning KDE once. Cause to me it seems KDE is already a lot of what they want Cosmic to be: it's highly customizable to the point where you can make your own thing out of it that can barely be recognized as KDE any more, writing your own applets is fairly easy and they generally don't just break with updates, and tiling scripts for KWin are also a thing.
    Still, Cosmic looks interesting and I appreciate them pushing the Rust GUI.

Also system76 would still ne in the same position of being at the whims of another project's visions and ideas. Kde also has serious stability issues and feature creap. Cosmic Desktop goal seems to be making the transition from Pop OS gnome as clean as possible while Also increasing the functionality and performance

    Re: place the main shortcut key next to the space bar so it's under stronger fingers... Congrats, you just rediscovered what Apple knew back in the early 1980s. Apple had it right all along, and Microsoft (and the Linux desktop in imitation) got it wrong. It still cheeses me off that Firefox for other-than-Mac refuses to allow Mac-like keyboard interaction, even after heavily customizing Gnome's shortcuts. I still haven't figured out where FF hides their keyboard shortcuts in that monstrously large and complex code base.
    Cosmic devs: please keep the keyboard input customizable! It would be best to start with classic Mac shortcuts, and then add more for workspace navigation using similar logic. But simply allowing customized keyboard behavior would be good enough. Especially if applications could be forced to honor the user's preferences.
