In the original story, Kris was made by order, specified it to the owner. That's why making one kris is like having an interview with an interviewee before he/she becomes an employee. The Mpu 9or smith) decided the good date to begin the whole process, from the initiation ceremony, what type of steel, how many steel should they picked and that leads to Pamor (Damascus-styled visual), interviewing the order maker, deciding how many loks (curvy wave), for what purpose the Kris is made, and so on.

@@jihancessar7156 You will note after watching the second video that what you were told is likely at least slightly different from what the elders I spoke to told me. From what I've been able to discern, there is a lot of variation from region to region concerning the spirituality of the keris. I'm hoping at some point in the future (and pending the success of this channel) to travel to Indonesia and learn more about the keris and do better and more in depth videos.

Hai there, great video on kris sword.. i live in Malaysia, and i also own a heirloom kris.. like indonesia, malaysia also have their own kriss style, and the most good looking kris design is the TAJONG KRIS.. even the royal family in our country wearing this kris design..

Keris are weapons for fighters who dare to face enemies head-on, not like swords or spears that are used from a distance. a great keris forged by not just any blacksmith. A great keris iron is made from a mixture of 7 different types of iron and its 7 nature are also from 7 different locations. The finished keris will be bathed with poison that is not from animal venom if the owner wants it. keris of different shapes according to the hierarchy, such as keris of the warior commander, keris of the king, keris of the prince, keris of power, keris of punishment, keris of state principle . all different in shape, size and number of curvesbesides keris such as sarong and keris holder are only decorative but have meaning according to the heart of the owner. daggers were created to stab the victim's stomach with the intention of severing the opponent's abdominal cord. and the dagger was not created to stab the heart as the main stabbing center. except for the power dagger from the king to punish the offender which is longer than normal and is stabbed in the neck of the shoulder straight to the heart of the offender and only leaves a small stab mark and the stab hole is hidden and covered with soil. such is the art of keris until the way of killing by the Malay system also has its art.
The keris is a weapon that has become a legend until now, in the past the keris was not only seen from its appearance, but also from its prestige and magical power, it was different from today's artificial keris.

Keris is the native spelling and pronunciation. Kris is how westerners write it.
@@TheKnifeLifeChannel Ancient kris has 7 elements in it, correct me if im wrong. I believe some ancient kris contains uranium because one of the ingredients in making the blade is meteorite. Could be wrong tho idk
@@preachfab I am unaware of any kris that contain uranium. Meteorites are usually comprised predominately of iron nickel. Nickle is used by some bladesmiths as "show layer" in their damascus steel. It creates brilliant bright contrasting lines against steel after the acid etch to reveal the pattern.
The legend keris is one of one was made, the name is Taming Sari.. Safe queen at King of Perak.. 😁😁😁 asking Google.. Normal person can fight without learning martial arts.. But only selected people can touch it. 😉😉😉

Hello! This video deserve more attention! You provide details that I, a native Javanese, don't even know!
Well, unfortunately most knowledge about keris circulating in our community is almost all myth. We don't really have quite an easy access reading material about it so what we know are mostly hearsay.
For instance you said the swelling on the sheath was based on whether or not the owner live in coastal area but my friend, who is practicing ancient Javanese belief system (more like a shaman I'd say), said different thing.
The boat-like swelling was intended for the user to stand tall. A keris usually was slipped under a tight broad belt called "Stagen" and the curly part pushes against your back. That makes bowing down really uncomfortable.
Stand tall is the expected attitude for younger people hence such keris style is called "keris kanoman" (nom/anom means young).
The specimen you presented (the one with flatter swelling at the beginning of the sheath) was used when the owner was summoned by the king/sultan so that he could bow down befor the king/sultan.
Here bowing down (and to look wise ) is the expected attitude for elderly people and therefore it is called "keris kasepuhan (sepuh means elderly)"
Maybe you're right, maybe my friend's right, maybe both of you are right?

Thanks, I appreciate your support! It has been hard to find source material about the keris. There isn't much written about the keris in English but I tracked down what I could, including material from the great Donn Draegor. I also happened to be lucky enough to have two experts in my area.
What you said regarding the shape of the sheath is very possible. Like I mentioned in the video the grip, sheath, etc., are all just the "clothing" of the blade. They can be different things to different people and have different purposes. The example of the boat-like swell was just one theoretical possibility: it could be either what you suggested or was told. One thing I've noticed with my brief foray into the world of the keris is the amount of conflicting ideas. You'll notice in the follow up video to this that there is a lot of disagreement with me in the comments. I expect that this is due to the variety of keris and their cultures throughout Indonesia. Its hard to come up with universal attributes for all keris! I suspect that your friend is correct for his region; something for me to look at in future. Thank-you for bringing it to my attention.
If you'd be willing, I could use another share for this video to get it out to more people and showcase the keris for the gem that it is. And yes, a fine keris is wicked cool!

The most detailed kris video by far! I would like add some facts regarding the hilt of a kris.
The hilt of a kris is very distinctive and has various styles. Different styles indicates where it may have been made.
It looks like your kris might have a bugis style to it. Or if its not an antique it might have no style at all.
Other hilt styles are 1. Sundang (the filipino or sulu types just like the one you showed, used mainly on the larger kris that are focused more on slashing, some might say due to this distinction that a Sundang kris are not a true kris) 2. Balinese 3. Madura/flower 4. Majapahit (earliest form) 5. Jawa[java] Demam (most common in Java and Malaysia) 6. Patani (with a long nose)

You are absolutely correct! The grips associated with the various kris blades are numerous and vibrant. Many kris collectors also like to simply collect grips. I intend to come back to the kris and focus on various aspects of these blades, such as the pamor, blade styles, and of course grips. Source material can be a bit difficult to find over here in the States, so if you have recommendations for where to find information, I'm eager to hear them. As always, thank-you for your support!
@@TheKnifeLifeChannel Honestly all my sources are just from online pdf's I found on google. I used the query 'types of keris hilts' and found two pdf's in the results. One is titled 'Beauty Charm and Spiritual Aspect of the Keris Hilt Materials' and another simply named 'Keris [and] Other Malay Weapons'
Both seem to be taken from a book or study or something i dont know and i havent tried to find where the pdf got the material from

but I do have info in thailand's variant but I doubt them due bias of thai's version and I'm not sure that all of information the thai kris forger told is entirely true for all of kris all over SEA
in thai version of story (I will skim over the legend of name and something that seem too not add up) kris is a weapon blessed by gods so it put many symbol of hindu dieties in it
the opposite side of firemark around the swell suppose to be represent of ganesha
along with the miniature of elephant snout and tusk will have carving of ganesha as well in the original kris
but due the Muslim influence in later era the blatant icon of hindu god have to go so what's left is elephant-like marking
now come to the hilt the older version will have more straighter slightly bent grip and craved to represent shiva
it would have whole body of shiva in anger avatar from with the snake of shiva in normal avatar around the neck and a shiva's testicle icon on it
the head of shiva will bent in one side in gesture of trying to listen the sound of people who warship him
and the sheath have a from of a boat as well as icon of clitoris on its side that meant to be together with the shiva's testicle
but after major influence of Muslim in the south sea even the kris forger convert Muslim so the kris after that era no more have from to represent hindu god

Here in Brunei we have a story about the Keris old people says that the reason the blade is curved is that a prince has been given a power to shape shift and shift into a snake and bit a princess and made her into a coma and healed her to make that princess fell in love with him

The wavy part of the keris may be count as unit known as 'Lok'. Traditional keris would have odd number of Lok starting from 3, 5,....
Lok 7 is a sign that the owner is an honorary person / special envoy commisioned under the sovereign King.
Lok 9 is a speciality that the owner is of Royal or Regent.
Lok 3 is commoner's and Lok 5 is showing that the owner is associated with Martial Art or known as Pendekar. There would be peculiar Keris with so much Lok or welded with even number of Lok in some cases.
This used to be philosophical given by older generation in Malay kingdom. I do not know the limit and extension across theNusantara as a whole.

The philosophy of the keris is to utilize the enormous super-duper potential energy of iron. So in the keris used iron-carbon material in dominant quantities. a little bit of steel. a little nickel.
Because carbon can record words, the kris maker when forging it needs to say prayers and hopes.
The number of waves also represents positive energy programming.
13 waves and 9 waves is the hope of getting rid of bad luck and increasing sustenance and love.
keep this philosophy in mind. then anyone can make a great kris.

Things I've heard: the first keris were straight or had commonly no more than three bends but in the 14th Century, Chinese merchants travelling to Indonesia found the wave-exaggerad blades beautiful and thus the blade makers started making keris with up to 13 bends.
The pamor material was consciously made brittle so that little posioned metal flakes stayed inside the victim's body.
A limited number of keris were forged from nickel-rich meteorite iron and were though to possess magical abilities because their material came from the sky.
The carved/filed perforations in the hilt of traditional keris represent how many persons it has killed.
The first keris blades were straight, and many still are. I haven't heard anything regarding the Chinese influence. A brittle blade wouldn't result in flakes being left behind in the body, it would just mean the blade would break easily. Pamor would be heavily etched so that poison oil would sit well in the deeper groves though. A surprising number of keris were forged from meteorites, but the stories of magical abilities is not limited to just these blades. And different islands and areas have their own traditions but I haven't heard of "tally marks" on the grips of keris blades, although it would not surprise me. Thanks for sharing!

I barely focus on history of a weapon. As long as it is effective it's good. And I sincerely think keris is a really efficient weapon, it is light, fast and lethal. And also, I think keris, such dagger type weapon should be used along with shield to provide more defense since it is a short type weapon, just like Roman style of fighting. Keris would probably perform better than Roman gladius when being used together with shield I think, cause it thrust faster.

Why we use arsenic ( werangan ) thats not about Poison. If some of iron mix with arsenic couse more look like black. Arsenic doesn't make nickel black. The beauty's will showing amazing pattern from nickel... First generation keris is Kadga. You can see at relief candi at indonesia. For more information you can search book of Ensiklopedia Keris..
Thank-you for pointing this out in more detail! I mentioned in the video that it is used for etching the damask pattern, but focused on dispelling the myth that werangan makes the blade poisonous. I was not aware that werangan is used to make a darker etch. Western smiths typically use different chemicals for this purpose such ferric chloride. I may have to try using werangan on one of my blades in future. I will be sure to look up the Ensiklopedia Keris. Thank-you again for taking the time to share your knowledge!

For us Indonesians the keris is almost sacred, many people even believe that if you buy a keris from an unknown maker then it can be cursed and give you misfortune or tragedy, because we believe that the keris has a spirit inside us that can either protect us or harm us. Even with the arrival of Hinduism and then Islam many of our anamist beliefs are still strong. I wanted to give one of my foreigner friends one as a souvenir but I backed out because I was scared to give him a cursed keris

Oh yes, the red book of P Chem lurks in the background... As a biochemist you should double check my research on the toxicity of arsenic trisulfide. I'm sure I'm correct about it, but it never hurts to have a superior expert check. As far as Japanese knives, those are certainly on the list of to dos. I will probably do the kitchen knives one at a time rather than all at once. Each blade has its own uses and purposes, and I'd like to do videos with professional chefs demonstrating how they are supposed to be used.

I have a small collection of Shun knives which are not bad knives but I know there are better ones. Ha. And I’ve been out of practice for a long time. I’m sure you’re right regarding arsenic because there’s a similar phenomenon with Mercury (Hg the atom is not toxic but Methyl Mercury is because it can interfere with biological processes. I believe Hg0 can easily react and bind with organic molecules which is why Mercury thermometers are dangerous but the prior use of Mercury in vaccines for example was not.)

Have you ever considered that the purpose of the waves in the blade were more for hooking away and controlling other blades? It seems a much more plausible thing to say rather than the waves helping the blades saw through flesh. Maybe the blades that have many short, low-depth waves can have that quality, but the more typical ones with fewer broader waves don't actually seem that they would be very good for that. You can parry and hook with a straight blade but there is always that risk of the other blade just slipping off, or the other blade contacting yours and then sliding up to your handle and leaving to cut or poke something while its there in your space.
Otherwise the waves can make a blade effectively broader in the thrust, without actually requiring as much material as a solid blade. This is good for thrusts to the belly or chest, cutting a wider channel into the other person's flesh, making it more likely to strike the medial vein or artery, other than the obvious increase in surface area of the wound channel regardless. Maybe a serpentine blade can even get through the rings of maille easier, compared to a solid blade of equivalent breadth, but I don't know how common maille would be in the regions that kris style blades are native to. It seems like it would certainly sneak down the gap behind a person's collar bone more easily compared to a broader blade, if nothing else.

Actually, some kris are really poisonous. Upas or other arsenic poison is added to the kris at the final process by soaking the kris for several days in the poisonous solution. Balinese and Javanese kris are often poisonous. That is why the cleaning often uses coconut water, lime juice and limestone alkali solution, to cleanse the poison before adding more poison at the end.

I can tell that keris is dirty. Washing the keris is not arbitrary. Don't use soap or cleaners. Soak the keris in coconut water for weeks, then rub it with lime wedges over and over. If it is not clean yet, soak it again with coconut water, and so on until the Keris looks very clean. I repeat, don't use soap or cleaner! Coz can destroy that beautiful pattern on it's body.
No need to worry. The Keris has been returned to its rightful owner who is a master bladesmith. It will be cleaned and cared for in the appropriate manner.
Kris is not a knife, knife in Malay is for kitchen use and I knew some Filipino may use this word to refer as a Kris. Kris got many rank and identity in the Malay world it is not only know as a weapon. Unlike Javanese the Malay kris is different and plenty of design and purpose. The sword type like a Moro Kris we called it Sundang and as the Kris was design like a swiss army knife it is believe not a weapon for a warrior but the pirates mainly used for intimidating their prey and indeed poor for use in fighting. Kris is not easy to handle because the whole parts of Kris 360 degree was sharpen and can cut yourself easily and some blade is poison. The sheath of Kris is also a weapon, shield and first aid material. The handle of Kris is also a weapon to knock a forehead or stab a wrist.

The keris is spelled and pronounced that way in its native country, correct. However I have to use the nomenclature my language has for the blade. Its similar to saying "Deutschland" versus "Germany." An english speaker knows what Germany is, but not what Deutschland is. Its especially important for people typing things in on TH-cam. In regards to luk, I was again Americanizing to luks plural. What would be the proper plural form of luk for future use?

After owning a number of keris over the years I can say unequivocally they are knives/swords, just like any other, no magic, no fantastic abilities. Some are well made weapons, made by skilled craftsmen some are not.

Depending on the size of the keris blade, it typically is classified as a dagger or sword. In spite of my channel being called the "Knife" Life, I work with anything that has a sharp edge on it.
You might be surprised to know that Keris can be formed into anything. Theres a spear (search pawnstar Tombak Keris), dagger, knife, micro knife (used for charm), or even a Spatha sized keris. (Theres a history record which mention Gajah Mada used to have this Keris Sword)

The spelling "Kris" is from language drift over time. As for why I used that spelling its because "kris" is far more common than "keris" in the rest of the world and I have to work with the TH-cam algorithm.
