This is what I definitely needed after a busy day at work. Always enjoy coming home after work and picking up guitar and watch robs videos. I learn so much with robs videos he knows what to do to keep people coming back for more. Love the long videos. Will watch this a few times and each time will learn something new and take something different from each video.
Great video, love to see how you calmly and thoroughly explain things for people that may not understand what to look for or listen to. Keep em up man!!!
Thanks man! the amount of automation I use in mixes gradually increased over the years for the better. But I do sometimes feel like maybe I'm over automating and if I were better I would just use the right settings on a plugin. But it's nice to see your project with so much automation.. I guess I'm on a good path :) I will definitely be implementing this technique for my drums
Awesome dude! I recommend waiting until you're deep into your mix before you begin automating, and not at all during the tracking process. I know you didn't specify anything, but I just felt it was a good chance to say it! Good luck with your productions!
@@RobArnoldWorld have you ever thought about doing a wee series like a riff challenge? Like a wee 1 min video of you making up riffs or solos and see if your viewers can replicate it?
Hell yeah, keep these coming. Ive already been using “Weightless” as a template of sorts on a few of my songs. After I finished the first song I was working on, I loved the whole mix and master, but it came out a little warmer than I wanted, so I picked a few songs that I really like the mix on and trying to emulate that to make sure things come out as punchy and clear. Thanks for these.
Awesome! It's always smart to use reference tracks! Sometimes I'll pop on The Black Album for reference when I'm satisfied with my mix, and then... I'll realize I've got a long way to go! 🤘🤣
@@RobArnoldWorld 😆 yep. Mixing and mastering is not easy, especially when sound fatigue comes into play. I love the Elite mixes tho, they’re really clear, and they punch through, but no brittle high frequencies, the bass response is always heavy but really tight. Not sure if you did those, or if the whole band was involved, or if you had someone else do it, but they came out great. Can’t wait til I am able to cut something like that. I’m at least happy I can get a good master even if it’s not exactly what I want. I can at least get them to where I’m confident it sounds good, and there’s no crazy frequencies popping out. My biggest thing im trying to learn now is how to set a lead part in the mix, especially with heavy saturated guitars, and still get it to pop. I always feel like the lead is drowned out, too muddy, or if i get it as clear as I want, it’s too loud. I know it’s possible to do because I hear it all the time. Crazy how playing for 20 years gives practically no help in any of it 😆
@@IndependenceGuitar Love hearing that about The Elite!👊 I'm responsible for the mix and spent years crafting it! It was a labor of love, and so it's very gratifying to hear you dig it! With your leads, make sure your rhythms are panned out all the way left and right. Try your lead straight up the middle, vary the tone slightly, add some compression, reverb and delay, and cut any un needed frequencies from it. See if that helps!
@@RobArnoldWorld will try all of it. I so far always have my guitars panned hard right and left, and put the leads down the middle, and it seems like the delay and reverb exacerbate it. I’ve actually tried a few different ones. But i think you’re right, it’s most likely the tone itself, or not EQing it right, and compression. I definitely haven’t fully learned how to use compression, especially when it gets into the more advanced stuff. Beyond setting a ratio and gain, I’m kind of pushing buttons and turning knobs to see what they do at this point lol. But yeah, I love the mixes on The Elite. I’ve been trying to use some of them as templates, but just not that good at eq and compression yet. I’ll have to send you a link in patreon or something. Its night and day from what I knew a few months ago, but I still got a lot to learn.
@@IndependenceGuitar Sure man- I'll take a listen to whatever you send over! I can also explain some compression tips for you too. But I will say that compression isn't something you should really be thinking about when it comes to getting your solos to pop though. However, compression CAN help make your solos fuller and smoother sounding, AFTER you've gotten your solos to pop. Tough to wrap your head around, I know. After I listen to your stuff over on Patreon I'll try and help you out!
Hey Rob, can you cover your signal chain from some of the heavier songs from The Disaster? "Baptized by Fire" or "Split Personality". Everything's Alright and The Moment are my favorites just because they're so melodic with awesome solos. I'm assuming it's probably EMG>5150>V30's. I surprised you don't play with the SD Blackouts. Thanks again for these cool videos.
Awesome bro! So glad to hear you're digging The Disaster! Ready for a shocker? The entire record was recorded on my ESP GL-56 with a Duncan Pearly Gates, through the Waves GTR plugin on some default crunch preset. In my opinion, it's more about the entire vibe of the songs and feel that make all the tones work well together. 🤘😎🎸
The sound engineer is listening for the same type of trouble areas when a band is playing, and he's riding the faders on the mixing board in real time as the show is happening. Typically during the bands sound check, like before the show, the engineer sets his EQ's, levels, and effects, based on the size of the room, the stage, the PA system, etc. So to answer your question, YES!
@@RobArnoldWorld Very cool Rob. Another thing I've always wanted to know. As you know when you go to see bands they something over do it with the sound check and I've seen some bands guitar players over power the singer. So it's important to get the right sound in the room.

Great tip! Another way I like to do this is with the waves c4 or c6, sometimes I can get away with not having to automate it!
Definitely! Apply the same principles to heavy chugging guitars as well!
That kick sounds amazing
