- Building the Tamiya 1/350 scale HMS Prince of Wales battleship, along with Eduard PE railing set. The Prince of Wales saw lots of action its short lifetime including joining the hunt for the Bismarck, escorting convoys in the Mediterranean, and carrying Churchill across the Atlantic to the US. Ultimately the Prince of Wales was sunk by Japanese torpedo bombers off the coast of Malaya, along the Repulse. Her loss was a major blow to the British and left the Indian Ocean and most of the Pacific without any Allied naval presence.

It’s great seeing you branch off from your regular kits. Can’t wait to see more!
Thanks! yes, It was a nice change and I definitely think I will build more in the future.
Awesome to see a ship kit. 1/350 is not my thing I do 1/700 scale. PE is fun at that scale. Enjoy the build and welcome to ship building. It's definitely a different skill set
Thanks!
The creation of this naval kit is a great undertaking.
Wonderful choise!
I'm very glad to have met you, my dear friend.😃
Thank you so much 👍
@@ModelNerd You're welcome.
To the next!😉
Very good video of an interesting subject. Well done and I look forward to the other videos with great anticipation.
Thank you mate
Wow - good luck with this build Stu, cheers Liam.
Thanks Liam
Nice intro piece to this video, fascinating and short life. I think component approach is sound for what could be a beast to paint. Look forward to seeing the next phase.
Thanks mate!
Good video!!!! As a kid growing up in the 1960s-1970s, built numerous ship models. Had a fleet of various types/scales that could take on any navy of the world mainly from Monogram and Revell. When got back into modelling during the 1990s, I went with mainly armor. About 15-years ago decided to try one of those 1:350 scale ships and chose Tamiya's King George V. Was a great kit to build and paint - definitely had to take my time on that one, though did not use any PE. Think painting the kit was more fun than building it!!
One thing to know about the early versions of Tamiya's 1:350 scale ships is that they did come with a small motor so that the model could actually be floated and move under its own power. My KGV still had the motor and battery brackets inside the hull (kind of like the early versions of Tamiya armor kits), and it came with metal rods for the propeller shafts. I also had the earlier versions of Bismark, Tirpitz, USS Missouri, USS New Jersey and they all had the same feature. Sometime in early 2000s (could be wrong about the timeframe) Tamiya re-issued most of their 1:350 scale ship models without the motor and removed the mounting brackets from the hull - looks like you got one of the updated versions. Then recently, say within last 5+ years or so, Tamiya started re-issuing kits with those pesky little motors.
On my USS Missouri kit, I adventured out and purchased some aftermarket gun barrels because they had the hollowed-out ends which were pretty good, but never got brave enough for the railings.
Looking forward to the painting video!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your childhood navy sounds awesome! After visiting Telford this weekend I'm very keen to look at 1/700 scale ships to see if I can make a small diorama. Great info about the motorised Tamiya ships - I didn't know that, so thank you!
Hi mate. I built this same kit, as my first ship build back in 2021. It was only my 3rd model build, after starting modelling again in 2020, after a gap of over 30 years. I chickened out on doing the camo scheme with mine. I just painted all the superstructure in a Grey colour. As depicted on the box for The Battle of the Denmark Straight. I did paint the top of the superstructure pieces and the turret tops in the darker grey. As pre the instructions. I did the same thing as you, with using the Eduard Cranes & Railings PE set. The railings and PE cranes do make a huge difference. I also added a wooden deck set. This does come in 2 or more pieces. But it does hide the seams in the plastic decks. I also added metal main gun barrels and an Eduard Royal Navy Crew Figure PE set (now discontinued). As far as those 5.5" secondary gun turrets go. There is a way of getting the guns to elevate without them dropping back into the body of the turret. If you pack out the inside of the turrets with some Blutac. The guns will still move up and down, but will not drop out of place, inside the turret. My PE railings do look a bit messy in places. It was my first go at a lot of PE. My next ship model should be better. I have 4 1/350 scale ships in my stash lol. looking forward to seeing you progress on this one mate.
If you "chickened out" on the paint scheme, you certainly didn't on the aftermarket!
Aye lol. I bought a set of 3D printed US Navy Crew Figures to go with my 1/350 Eduard USS Arizona kit. They are tiny lol. No idea how I will paint them with my eyesight.@@ModelNerd
My first ever kit, i prefer the ships over anything else, the waterline is always the pain
The small round part you were unsure of is a anchor windless, just a pully system for the chains.
Am looking forward to seeing her all painted up
Windlass, thank you - that's what I meant :)
Great start fellow Nerd, Some good tips.👍
When can we expect the next instalment?
I have both Tamiya PoW and KGV (King George V) kits, which I intend to convert to RC, so called Plastic Magic :)
With propulsion, rotating main gun turrets and NAV lights.
I also have various PE sets and the wooden deck veneers.
My first excursion into PE was with a 1:600 set for an Airfix HMS Manxman.
I spent hours putting together 9 teeny weeny pieces to make up a Vickers quad machine gun mount, about 1/8" high - then it flipped out of my tweezers and vanished.
I think the 'Carpet Monster' ate it!!😥
Looking forward to further vids from your build.
Cheers, Doug😎
Thank you Doug. I do need to get back to this - it's been too long. The PE has been putting me off, but I need to just get going on it.
@@ModelNerd I'm also waiting with bated breath for the next instalment. 👍🏻🇦🇺
Gotta admit Stu, the basic assembly seemed to have gone off quite well. I agree, the painting is more of the model than the structure itself. Good luck with the new airbrush. (and the PE)
Thanks! I'm hoping to get some time this weekend to add more PE.
Off to a grand start and a terrific job on the build. Those Tamiya kits aren't too bad considering they initially came out almost forty years ago. Will be good to see which scheme you choose to paint.
Thanks. Yes, they are surprisingly old. I'll almost certainly go for the Singapore camouflage scheme, after a bit more reading to get the colours and pattern right. Sovereign hobbies have aome good info.
I enjoyed your video...well done, Sir, well done indeed.
Thank you. I am still working on the PE railings so there will be another video on the Prince of Wales, at some point! :)
I've built this same kit. It was fun.
Good to know - thank you Paul. I'm looking forward to the painting.
Not bad for your 1st attempt Stu, Tamiya ship kits are great, I've done a few over the years, nice bit of history at the start, Did I ever tell you that my Grandfather was on the Hood when it was shelled by the Bismarck, sadly he wasn't 1 of the 3 survivors, ship kits are a bit of a learning curve when it comes to painting, good luck and see you in the next video.
Thanks John. No, I don't think you did mention that before. That's a incredible connection. So many lost on the Hood - over 1400. Hard to comprehend, really.
@@ModelNerd Just the misfortune of war.
Probably a good ship kit to start with as the fit is great, despite being somewhat laking in detail and the kit showing its age with rated deck lines. Brought back some memories as built this kit as a teenager its a subject I enjoy as my Grandfather was on a destroyer supporting her fight with the Bismarck after Hood Sunk. Looking forward to more. by the way you could use an earlier paint pattern as the model actually does not depict her as she was in the Pacific. think it says that on the box if memory serves.
Thanks. Yes, I think you're right about the kit being the non-Pacific configuration. I remember reading that somewhere. Do you have any good recommendations for smaller, 1/700 ships? I saw some very nice ones at Telford but didn't always get a chance to speak to the modellers. I'm more interested in British ships but most I find in that scale are Japanese.
Flyhawk and trumpeter both do great 1/700 kits the tamiya ones are a little basic. Trumpeter do quite few British ships WW2 and more modern. HMS Barham is an excellent kit I have built that hill recommend. I would also recommend Atlantic Models etch at 1/700 he dose generic railings and also etch wood deck!
Jason
Great advice - thank youk, much appreciated. I will look those up.
Greetings Nerd, thst looks to be a grest build, so I hope all goes well with the build, I would like to do a ship/boat but for me there is too much thsy must be added, looking forward to the next update, best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia 👌👍👌☺👌
It's certainly a different build experience compared to armour or aircraft
This is something very different, I'm looking forward to the final result.
When you are up in Telford, will you be seeing if there are any modelling shows on? A stupid question, I know.
Edited.
Thanks. I'm looking forward to painting it. Yes, I'll be at Scale Model World on the Saturday :)
Very detailed review, Except for Flying Cloud and Cutty Sark I have not built ship models. I find it to be an interesting " dichotomy " between the scaling of ships to aircraft. Ship models are very detailed down to all the parts. Current aircraft scaling are certainly detailed, however if they could get the detail scaling of the cockpit down to the detailing of the ship scale that would be awesome. The two genres of kit manufacturers should get together and collaborate on ship manufacturers building the cockpits . Your experience with 3D modeling will certainly enhance your building of this kit. It is a shame the shallow water ships are being salvaged, someday they may hit explosives that are still active. They should base some kind of buoys to monitor the sites. An interesting bit of neutrality is that when large screen TV's became popular, Japan dominated the industry some of the carriers that were named after carriers sunk had Mitsubishi TV's in their entertainment lounges. But I digress. The building of the Prince of Wales is going to be very informative, especially to see how to paint those tiny parts. Standing by, Cheers and Thanks for sharing.
Thanks - I always appreciate your comments. Yes, the painting is going to be an interesting part. I must get that PE finished first though....
Just started building that now xx 😮😊
Having fun with it?
@@ModelNerd be doing it with wooden deck but no PE I don't get on well with it lol
This was my first ship build too
How was the painting?
@@ModelNerd I found it easier to get a wooden deck aftermarket for the model because painting it was a pain. For the camo I personally couldn’t get it looking good so went with the 1 colour
Superbe maquette
Thanks!
Good work ,PE does look good but defo not fun making it .
Thanks! Yes it's definitely not something I want to make a habit of doing!
Great video! Just starting on my Tamiya 1/350 POW now. Noticed you have the etched railing. Did you buy that separately? I cant find it in my kit and yours looks the same as mine :/
Yes, the railing is a separate purchasr from Eduard. So don't worry, your kit is complete :)
@@ModelNerd Ahh ok Phew lol. Thanks for getting back to me :)
I’m currently building a 1:350 Tamiya Bismarck and Tirpitz kit. But I’m really unsure of how to paint them. I’m thinking of trying to Airbrush them, but then idk if I need to put them together completely. Or if I can just take off parts and paint them individually. Any tips?
I think this is partly why I have had mine on hold for so long. I really need to get back around to it. I think I'm going to airbrush mine, but keeping all the sub assemblies separate. I probably won't do any more construction than I've shown in this video, until after painting. Of course, that may cause some issues with getting the camo markings lined up, but I think it's much easier than building the entire ship and then trying to fit it into the spray booth, rotating it etc, without knocking bits off.
@@ModelNerd yeah. Kinda the same with me. Only that I’ve never airbrushed before🙂 I might buy an airbrush because i feel like it gives you a much nicer finish, than spray painting it or brush painting it :)
How come you didn’t airbrush before assembly? Deck etc? Is there a reason you couldn’t paint before fix?
I figured both ways had pros and cons, but the main drawback of painting first would be all the glue needed for the PE rails might mess up the paint job. Plus the deck becomes a lot harder to handle and install when there is delicate PE all around the edge.
One of the hardest ship camo i ever painted... 😅
Yes, it is starting to look rather difficult!
Hi, Im really interested how you get on with this kit, I bought it the other day and ordered the PE railings today. I never built a ship before either
So far the experience has been decent - but I've definitely deviated majorly from the instruction's build sequence. Subassemblies is the word of the day on this one!
@@ModelNerd when I looked at the instructions I thought that as well
where do you think part 52 is applied? l bought the same eduard set and l don't know what they are... Life Preserver Rings that you place randomly place on the superstructure?
I'm not sure - I think so, yes.
