  • In this latest 1/350 scale plastic model ship build, we’ll take on the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) Kagero class destroyer-Yukikaze. We'll construct, add kit supplied and White Ensign photo etch, airbrush, hand paint, weather, detail, and add rigging to Tamiya’s Kit #78020. This will be the 25th amateur model project for this channel.
UPDATE: On March 31, 2021, Caladan Oceanic re-surveyed the wreckage field believed to be the USS Johnston (DD-557) and confirmed it is indeed the Johnston through new underwater images including the bow which displayed "557". This section lies 21,180 ft (6456m) below the ocean
    surface.
UPDATE II: In June 2022, the wreck of the destroyer USS Samuel B. Roberts (DE-413) was discovered. It was sunk during the same battle as the USS Johnston (DD-557). It now holds the current title of deepest shipwreck discovered to date. The Samuel B. Roberts lies at a depth of 22,621 ft (6,895 meters) surpassing the USS Johnston by by 1,441 feet (439m).

Hi Eduardo, glad you like that and thanks for joining the channel! I use to present the materials and paints employed during the course of my videos, but I'd often still get questions about what I used. In response to that situation, I now display my paint/equipment/material slides after the "warm-up" intro. 😉

"30 minute blooper reel"--welcome to the world of Ship Modeling :-D
Be advised that there are PE sets for the 1/700 Kagero DD kits out there, and AM accessories.
A very credible build and a credit to your skills,
A couple of notes--the brown on the deck is due to IJN using a chestnut/russet colored linoleum over steel decks for increased footing (the USN used it to, but largely only at Signalman stations and some searchlight platforms).
Tamiya's Hull Red is actually perfectly matched to IJN hull red color chips. It needs 50% red to get to USN hull red; and used only !:4 with Insignia Red for RN hull red.
As a general note, destroyer propellors were in a Monel sort of green-steel sort of hue, and IJN ones had a green-steel-bronze sort of hue, per the preserved ones in Taipei.
    A magnificent build.

I have used Freetime hobbies for some great ships in 1/700 scale including Combrig Models and others. They are good enough but mislabeled or rather posted an incorrect pic of one expensive Combrig kit. It was the difference between one battleship vs a cruiser with the same name. So I got my cruiser instead of the battleship simply because I was using the picture on their website as an indicator of what I purchased. But still Freetime Hobbies is a good model supplier. Those rectangular objects on the bridge just below the hatches/windows were mattresses secured there to give some shrapnel protection . And were usually a dirty looking off white.
    Good job.
Maybe next time highlight the combat details a bit more you could even fabricate metal looking drop shrouds for the bridge windows .

great build, that Looks very helpfull for my own 1\200 YUKIKAZE card model project. Thank you. One Idea: A very much better bronze effect is possible (on the linoleum deck's bars as on the propellers) by using Citardel gold colour (can with a white cap!) with much finer grinded pigments... Same due to the silverish top of the torpedo transport wagon's railing and a tremendous lot of little dots that can additivly been set here and there. Hth,Chris

Hi Ho-203, so far in my ship builds for the channel, I have not applied a clear coat prior to adding any weathering including the oils. Typically, however, most modelers would add the protective coat.

Idk if you remember me but I had asked about the revell Uss Arizona a pretty long time ago now. Anyways, I want to get my dad a model(specifically a fighter jet or aircraft carrier) for his birthday but I put a limit of 35 dollars. What model would you suggest because my dad has been wanting to get back into modeling but doesn't have the time to actually go out and get one. If you could reply to this it would be a great help.

    • @MaxAfterburner
      @MaxAfterburner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Darth Revan, I do remember you, of course. At a $35 USD budget even without paints will limit your choices to kits and scale. For an aircraft carrier you'll have to look at 1/700 scale and for an aircraft probably a 1/72 scale kit. I don't know what your father's preferences are, but that's a starting point for you that I hope helps. 😃

    Two things:
    1. I have built the 1/350 scale USS England and according to what I was able to find it was painted over all blue as a camo for the Pacific. If ships could talk I imagine a conversation between the Yukkiaze and the England would be. Y - We paint our ships overall gray. Why do you paint your ships a dark sea blue...even the decks? E - You have kamikazes.
    2. The background sounds of a thunderstorm remind me of a white noise website I use. Back in normal times I used that site to drown out my co-workers. Now I use it to make me think I'm back in the office.
