The downfall started in 85, when they signed Pirelli as tyre partners , taht tyre was only good in certain conditions, but what really hit was the death of de Angelis at Paul Ricard in 86..
Exactly what I was thinking. They went from world champions with Piquet in 83, but by 85 they only won one race, the French GP. That was their last win ever. Then Piquet left for Williams, de Angelis took his place, and then died in a testing crash. Then BMW left.
48:37 very good point the shift to reliability and how it accelerated really started from the introduction of Parc Ferme in 2003 if you force parts to be more reliable they will be over time You’re good to see maybe 2-3 proper engine blow up a season now as a reason
Lot's of factors as poimted out in the pod, personally I'd go with 84, a owner who isn't interested is the death nail the coffin of any team. Had Bernie sold it to a more engaged and competent owner theh could've chugged on into the 80s amd 90s and neen bought out by some manufacturer.
By the way 42:46 load of bollocks 161-55 next, Brabham was definitely one of the great teams. I will agree with Mr. Smith's point on Brabham's downfall with them losing their leaders and the 1986 thing however.
84 was an ok year but the engine was unreliable for whatever reason despite no refueling 85 the pireeli tored were terrible the brakes didnt work the gearbox was a vintage 76 model and car 2 was just meh with drivers 86 was the skateboard car with tilled units the car wa just so slow the car had no balance and reliability was terrible again as engine power in turbos was at its peak bmw couldnt keep up anymore plus hey were zupplying areows and Benetton that year as well 87 had the pop off valves which didnt help and the car was just simply meh and the tilted untis didnt like the valves and just blew up alot 89 was the only good year post bernie ad they got a podium and were reasonably ok with the judd units after that judd fell off the money vanished Yahama sucked at the time and the owners didnt know what they were doing
All Brabham potential in 84 was killed with refueling ban, because 83 strength was superior sprinting with half empty tank. 85 Pirelli dogshit tyres didn't help as well as owner focus to be F1 supremo.
42:44 Veryincontext Ciaron Smith moment
On the rare occasion I'll be siding with you on this.

Those Pirelli tyres were brilliant for qualifying, absolutely brilliant
then yes, in the race they were less desirable than other tyres
42:44 this information from Ciaron was very intellectual and definitely was a game changer in this podcast

42:44 As much as I like Alonso, I have to agree with what Ciaron said here. Renault just had advantage over Mclaren's reliability in 05'

This man must never be able to unknow the nonsense he just said to everyone there lol! 😂🤣
