I had the privilege of flying on the Ferrari Piaggio a few years back and was most impressed by the size and comfort of the cabin and just how quiet and quick it was.
I live next to the inbound/outbound flight path of Addison airport, Addison Tx. The sound of those engines are pure power and excitement. I love watching this throughbread course along the path in and out of Addison. Thank you for creating something so beautiful and graceful.
Love the piaggio. Excellent performance; combination of max speed and minimal fuel consumption. In today’s market $8,000,000 is a minimal sum for a flying ferrari.
Beautiful aircraft!!! About 1979 I talked with aircraft engineers/manufacturers to make such an aircraft. I was ignored because it was not a conventional design. Forward canards, swept wings, and twin counter rotating turboprop engines using lifting body technology!! I am pleased to see that this design is being used in aviation today!!!
Having spent 2 years as a kid in Italy and having Italian engineering friends, the Italian way of design is just different. Always are designs with flair, and good engineering and looking at a plane like this, you get the feeling of something special. io sono un tifoso
I have for a long time loved the unique style and technological brilliance of the Avanti. Engineering and technical excellence gives jet speed, without the jet fuel burn. This is the fixed wing aircraft that I would like to own and Pilot, one of the very few fixed wing types to hold my interest. The thought of an Avanti Drone is something quite special. One can immediately appreciate what Mr. Ferrari saw in this aircraft that made him want to keep it flying!
I've been off the ramp for 11 years now, but I still recognize the Avanti's engine sound when it flies overhead. I also liked the single point refueling, very unusual for a light turboprop.
There's a small airport near the redwood city estuary, where i often sail. Often i see one of these planes flying over head and i've always admired its exquisite design.
Very innovative and good performance figures (especially turbo prop cruise speed), but tends to lack baggage space. Piaggio's target market is for the daily commuter who might not take much baggage on board, but could loose out to general commuter options.
I unwittingly designed something very similar in undergrad studies in aero engineering at around the same time with a bit of a different canard and a bit bigger main wing to accommodate more fuel. Still I thought I was a genius with three lifting surfaces. I didn't even know if there were engines available then. Those Pratt PT6-66Bs are still the only pusher config available today, I think the Beech Starship used the -67Bs. I was inspired by the LearFan.
The video is correct it was designed in collaboration with Learjet in both Italy and USA, i'd suggest a quick look on Wikipedia before spitting the untrue.
@@ThatRedGTI99 You believe everything you see on Wikipedia do you? You know anyone can write anything they want on Wikipedia. I did my homework. Be careful
I've seen them around my airport, and was able to be alone with one for an hour or so. I captivated by it's unconventional design, being used to King Airs and Pilatus PC-12s. The wing is much narrower by comparison, almost jet like, and the aircraft is smaller in it's exterior. The interior is very spacious when compared to the aforementioned aircraft. I can almost stand up straight in the plane being 6' 1" and there is no knee rubbing with passengers in this bird, It feels like a medium sized jet inside. The only complaint, the cockpit is a tad cramped, and as a pilot I wish they had sacrificed some cabin space for a little more cockpit space, but a fantastic interior none the less. Their efficiency and speed is also something to behold. Maybe one day I'll get to fly one.
When I worked for Raytheon we had a Beech Starship flying out of Hanscom Field in Bedford MA. I would admire its sleek airframe something the Piaggio P.180 Avanti has in plenty. The Starship had a sad fate, I'm glad the P.180 Avanti is still flying.
I still prefer the Starship, I think it looks better, it was a pity it wasnt more successful. But i think Beech tried to bite off too much in one go. If they had been a bit more conservative with the cockpit and given more attention to the composits and engines i thinknit might have done better.
The front canard would have a higher stall speed than the rear large wing. This will make for a better control of the aircraft near stall speed and make tailspins nearly impossible. At stall speed, the aircraft will just nose done a bit and will speed up again. I like this design a lot.
They should extent it a little bit and ..... add the third prepallor at the back .... small in size .... compare to the other 2 .... more over 3rd fan should be double. ..... fan ....

I don't care much for the oddity of its design, except for the fact that has a fuselage shaped as an airfoil to augment the lift provided by three other lift-surfaces, but I do care about performance. I like its short-field operation, cruising altitude(above most storm systems), small main-wing and three different lift-surfaces (better storm and turbulence handling for the same lift capacity), low stall-speed (better chances of surviving a crash at slow speeds), spacious cabin, and fuel economy. I would want a range of, at least, 2,500 n.m, though, for ferry flights into Hawaii and Greenland with some fuel to spare. I would also want to carry all of the fuel in the wings for passenger protection in the event of a crash, and a somewhat lower stall speed for shorter braking and softer impact in a crash.
I think it is unique in the sense that it is the only aircraft available filling the gap between slower turboprops like the Super King Air and corporate jets. The more fuel prices rise, the more attractive it will be for the operators.

There was a private jet company near me in Virginia which operated these, but I can’t find the name now. I routinely hear them flying over and consider myself pretty lucky to be able to see such an exotic plane on a regular basis. Also it’s not the engine which is loud, it’s the prop and the exhaust through the prop - they emit a distinctive square wave noise that can be heard even at high altitudes.

There is a man whom flies one, and has 3 trailer loads of parts, he bought from Raytheon / Beechcraft., as best I know, there ARE 2 flyable.
Leighton Samms Wow, Good to know at least 2 are flyable. Years ago I got to ground-tour one. The then head pilot ( now deceased ) for Pape Corp. was being courted as a customer. He arranged access for friends to see it when Beach flew one in to Eugene OR. Pape did not buy in... but it was cool to see one up close. This plane is interesting.. I wonder how many are US registered.
James Sempy After seeing this I got curious. There were 53 Stars built, 5 remain in private hands, with one owner having 2. 4 are in the USA. The guy with 2 uses them in his business to fly between Texas and California regularly. There are many youtubes by these owners about their aircraft. Biggest issue is avionics, CRT TV screens glass panel, and no easy way to convert to modern integrated systems digital glass.
The distinctive prop noise lets you know one is overhead. And the built in weight and balance sensor/computer system means you never have to ask a woman how much she weighs.
One of the most beautiful aircraft of our time, and also one of the most efficient versus other competing business jets. It's an absolute tragedy that this airframe hasn't "taken off" by now and is indeed at risk of a complete failure / collapse.
One of the Avanti's difficulties is it's size. Big wigs like room to stretch. Sort of like the middle age guy who buys the Ferrari. It's fast and looks great, but it's tough trying to get your family into the back seat. 😁
@@f4ephantom I wish I knew lol, I know the fuselage shape dictated the interior which was kinda unusual. In that respect I wouldn’t compare it to small business jets, but for a family typically moving ~3 or so people, it’s great.

@@f4ephantom LOL I can never un-see that now. 🙈 The starship is still one of the coolest planes ever, but I never realized the over wing fueling - when you get to that size, it’s got to be a serious PITA.
@@aowen2471 What I mean is Rutan's design ideas matched with Piaggio's quality standards. Maybe if Piaggio had made the Beech Starship it would have lasted?
@@ColtonRDean Yes, though I'm not sure why Beech didn't achieve similar standards given their King Air is one of the most populate twins and you don't get that by producing shoddy kit. I'd love to find out Burt's views & the team from Beech as to why it failed - that would be an interesting read.
Propellers are counter-rotating btw. I wonder it they considered ducted fans / props? surely that would help with noise and increase efficiency even more
Not much as the drag from the ducts subtracts from the propulsive efficiency gains from using them! Also, as the props are behind the wing there is less lift generated by the extra airspeed from the props over the wing... this is a good thing if you lose and engine... you don't get asymmetric lift and yaw moment arm, which can cause at near stall un-recoverable stall induced spin. Most of the noise is created by the engine exhaust interfering with the airflow over the props, the new EVO version has improved prop design that reduces noise by 68% over the previous models. The new props can be fitted to the Avanti II design as their is no engine difference. The EVO also has improved lift and less drag due to the winglets. And, improved landing gear made by different company, with less costly maintenance and longer time between service.
One benefit of the production of the Avanti is that its outer skin is prestressed durning assembly. This makes the thing very smooth and have lower drag, higher service ceiling with higher cabin pressure 41,000 ft. / 6000 ft. equivalent, and the thing is very strong.... the crash in Greenland shows just how tough that fuselage is, difference of walking away. The wings are the most advanced design ever put on an aircraft with 55% laminar flow... and very low drag.
The forward wing which they do not call a canard produces positive lift so that the negative lift of the tail could be done away with thereby increasing airspeed.

The starship is still one of the coolest planes ever, but I never realized the over wing fueling - when you get to that size, it’s got to be a serious PITA.
I love it! Imagine if Piaggio had hired Burt Rutan what amazing aircraft could have existed?
You would have the Beech Starship which was worse in just about all aspects.
Amazing aircraft.
i _love_ this beauty! Only Beechcraft Starship comes even close, and it is neither as fast nor as economical as Avanti!
love this plane
Its really cool. What do have to say about American Beechcraft Starship?
Regarding the interior .... can you have proper 8 passanger seating .... with 4 plane seats ... and 4 couch seating ..... in total 8.
The forward wing which they do not call a canard produces positive lift so that the negative lift of the tail could be done away with thereby increasing airspeed.
