      So, Piaggio P180 Avanti 1 - 2 - Evo. It's actually one of the best in the class or perhaps the best Turbotrop/Private jet out there. With its distinct design that not all would be pleased. But this was all engineered & made for a purpose. Especially the engine, the sound of the turbine & the backwards propellers. I can't wait for the next evolution of this plane. I hope they would make it more roomy, longer & technically sophisticated in their next model.
      No wonder, Aprilia RS-Gp prototype they use in #MotoGP share its design. This was the one they have got their inspiration. It's all about branding. Eventhough the rest of the competition have move onto different design, Aprilia kept this one until today. 👏

    I live in the same city as where the p180 used to be built, before the plant was transferred on a smaller airport 90km west. Sometimes they still test the planes in the skies here (at 14:11 you can see our city airport), every time I hear the roar I feel like I have to seek for that plane in the sky. Pretty amazing plane, I once saw one made a full tight loop at an airshow

    You fail to mention the MOST SIGNIFICANT THING about the Piaggio - the Canard wing format means that if the aircraft EVER stalls, the nose simply drops and the plane goes into a dive and airspeed increases. In aircraft with conventional wing layout, a stall means massive loss of airspeed and a most probably lethal spin. But with all your blather about cabin width and upholstery I guess this potentially lifesaving and significant SAFETY FEATURE doesn't merit a mention...

    • @PedroPaisPP
      @PedroPaisPP ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Bullshit. A conventional wing, when stalling, allows the nose to drop since cg is always ahead of center of lift. In the Atala the center of lift moves back in the wing and generales the pitch down rotario. In a canard layout you need to deliberately design the canard to stall before the main wing. In both cases you get a nose drop. So no added safety. Both are viable and equivalente of properly designed

    • @tristamsculthorpe4609
      @tristamsculthorpe4609 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PedroPaisPP Bullshit yourself - a canard wing is designed to stall BEFORE the main wing stalls, causing the nose to drop. This is one of the main reasons that most high performance aircraft and many fighter jets have the canard configuration. Quote from Aerocorner: Canard designs are sometimes advertised as “stall proof.” This means that it is tough to stall a well-designed canard design. If airspeed slowed down excessively, the canard would stall first. The nose would drop, airspeed would build back up, and the aircraft would recover.

    • @PedroPaisPP
      @PedroPaisPP ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aircraft with canards usually have specific reasons for them. It’s true that a canard design allows for lower induced drag since for conventional designs, the tail plane generates downwards lift. Other than that differences are marginal. And there are disadvantages. It’s much harder to design and size optimal canards. It’s difficult to implement canards in low speed airplanes, etc.
      There’s a reason they are not the usual design choice

  • @john_hind
    @john_hind 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Seems an interesting configuration, but why does it need so many different horizontal airfoils? In particular the horizontal fins on the top of the tail must add significant cost, weight and drag when on the face of it pitch control could be provided by the forward wings. And on top of this redundancy there are also the dorsal fins at the back of the fuselage which seem to be angled to give further pitch stability as well as contributing to yaw stability.

    AI generated video doesn't mention that Piaggio aircraft division is being sold or shut down, and the fleet is very small so service and support are huge issues. The plane also suffers from the scandal at Avantair and now potentially at Aerovanti. Video also is very wrong about range. In the real world, the P180 quickly loses range when loaded and with a pilot and 4 passengers is really only a 750 nm range airplane (newer Evo is better). It is a very fast, efficient and comfortable plane if it meets your mission profile.

    Popular would be the PC12 with over 2000 produced in less time, 30 years since its 1994 introduction and 100/yr produced and sold annually. As turboprop twins, there were over 1000 MU2’s produced in its 16 year production run. Various Beechcraft KingAirs of various types exceeds 5000 units at this point.
    Between acquisition and hourly operating costs, speed and payload capacity, the P180 was always a very niche offering

      Better visibility for the pilots, too. But Beech was able to start selling earlier King Airs to the military branches decades ago, so they had a huge market, which gave name recognition. Beech was able to provide civilian service centers everywhere, which is another selling point. Fewer service centers for the Avanti scares some potential customers away. But yes, the Avanti is bigger, quieter, faster, more fuel efficient, and likely has better one-engine inoperative handling characteristics.

Yes it looks great but many times I've had my peace and quiet disturbed by these things that sound like a mosquito on steroids. Its noise footprint massively exceeds anything else that visits our local airport. I think the thing about the canard is on landing one basically flies straight down a glide path but the canard goes into ground effect so the pilot need not worry about landing flair as the plane does it. First time in cockpit this can be disconcerting… particularly at maximum sink rate allowed. The other aspects of the canard is to direct airflow and smooth turbulence to the tail surface, and reduce drag as the lifting load is shared between the canard about 28% positive the aircraft body positive, the main wing positive, and strangely the tail which has positive lift. The numbers are something like, if I remember correctly for level Flight at full maximum cruise … I think this is at 31,000 feet … canard to tail 12% - 30% - 30% - 12%. This allows the main wing lifting area reduction of 34%, and the wing is a special design developed at Ohio State University over 10 year with a 50% laminar flow leading edge back rather than a typical 20%. Now best fuel consumption is at high altitude of 39,000 to 41,000 ft, but the KTAS is lower dropping to 330 KTAS at 41k feet. Maximum operating radius unrefueled is about 750 nautical miles worse case at max pwr and load at 398KTAS but the maximum certified range is at least double that and a little over 1793 nautical miles for Avanti 2 at VFR 39,000 ft. and around 356 KTAS and maximum power. This drops at IFR due to regulatory requirements to 1456 KM to 1509 KM. Note the engines are rated flat at 850 hp sea level to 41,000 feet.
    One of the interesting things is this has a very perfect exterior surfaces as it is constructed outside - in using special skin vacuum jigs. And, the airframe is incredibly tough. The low fuel crash over Greenland in a extremely rough ice field with jagged ice surface of 2 meters height the fuselage stuck a 1 meter high obstruction on impact survived absolutely intact clear to the very far back ( behind the lavatory ) rear structural bulkhead at the wing attachment with almost no exterior dents and fully intact passenger compartment… the main door was operable but block partly by Titian… this was a high speed crash at over 200 knots as that was the lowest speed over the suggested maneuvering speed MTOW 199 KIAS at time of impact. Everyone survived with minimal or no injury… the Danish Coastal patrol was at the crash site within a little over two hours by military helicopter and vey excellent post crash photos where able to be made for the investigation. Few if any military fighter aircraft would survive in so perfect structural shape in similar conditions, and they have far greater structural design limits. Icing was not involved as the Piaggio has about the best anti-ice system of any private plane. Recovery was not undertaken due to distances and limits of equipment. I examined the photos you linked us too, amazing considering the claimed speed of 200 Knots..(240mph?) that's moving! and the extreme hostility of the landing surface. impressive.

      @@sardcanada2640 As I remember the minimum maneuvering speed is 120 KIAS so you have 80 knot window when you are taking off or landing… the higher speed would help with punching through the rough ice surface terrain and cleanly removing appendages like wings and landing gear with less risk of tumble or cartwheel in the crash. A clean tough fuselage is about as good as it gets during a crash. Tumbling and cartwheel subject the occupant(s) to high injury producing g-loads whereas rolling has less injury producing g-loads to occupant(s). He had little fire risk running on empty tanks and loosing propulsion due yo running out of fuel pressure, along with environment of rough ice and snow. My opinion is when the ATC limited him in a transoceanic crossing he should have declared emergency as to fuel at least. Though he had plenty of fuel margin…. Too much unexpected risk at low elevation in the arctic transoceanic flying… and too little time to thinkOn trans oceanic flights basically ATC is blind as to have traffic on radar so they default to large separation particularly in elevation. The Piaggio makes its best fuel consumption very high 39,000 to 41,000 ft. but to be limited to 20,000 ft by ATC … they made the first mistake leading to the crash… then as usual it became a chain of dumb mistakes. The idea of carry ferry tanks for extra fuel inside the passenger compartment is totally sketchy in my opinion … go with the certified set up and operation is always best, and work your flight plan and operation around that.

    Are people confusing Piaggio with Beech Starship? Re:noise? (@officialbrittishtaxpayer5609)
