What to do in the backpacking off season? 1. Drive to a backpacking outfitter. 2. Wander around the store to see what they have. 3. Follow an employee around the aisles and talk about the hikes you've been on. 4. Discover they just work there and are not into backpacking. 5. Drive back home without buying anything.
😂Great ideas!
@ Appalachian Snaps Hahahahaha 😂 that's the funniest comment ever!
Thank you , Rev.....you are a blessing and inspiration.
I'm 56 years and just started hiking as a time of healing and reflection from the loss of my bride......
Thank you for your generosity and your passion for the outdoors, I m learning a lot.
Merry Christmas and joy-filled Happy New Year.
Rudy
Rudy, Keep going despite your loss. Nothing can be said to make things easier, but things may become bearable. Bless you.
Thank you, Rudy. Have a merry Christmas and a happy new year as well. I’m so sorry to hear about your wife’s passing. Hiking and getting away from it all helps to cope somewhat.
Thank youTiger, thank you, Rev.
You are a great inspiration. I’m 77 with 2 heart attacks and 12 strokes. I love the outdoors and we have decided to hike instead of riding e-bikes on this years rv trip. Thanks for the kick in the pants to get us going.
You’re quite welcome.😁
Greetings from Japan! It's cold here. Snow has started falling. So I'll just watch more of your videos and Rev up for 2023!!
Great idea Richard. Me too! 😁❤️👍
Thank you for the nice video. I only make daytours, but hike at every season and every weather. I do not have any off-time. In wintertime, I have to replace my trail running shoes by hiking boots or snow shoes, but I cannot stay indoors for a long time. One more tip what to do in a hiking off-season: Make ambitious high-quality photos during your hiking tours and watch and enjoy them again and again when hiking is not possible. This helps to hold up the motivation for both the next hiking tour and for making even better photos. Best Christmas wishes from Germany!
Thank you Jurgen. That’s why I like to watch my TH-cam videos. I can’t believe I did what I did.❤️👍
Merry Christmas Rev. Thanks for your inspiring words. I’m looking forward to my 2023 AT attempt and review your videos often. Happy Trails! -Barn Cat Gary
Thanks Gary. Good luck on your AT hike.😁🎄❤️
Rev, I'm 69 and have MS. I go to the VA Dr's clinic for checkups annually. Was a scout in my younger yrs, even a scout master of the same troop. Love getting outdoors. Trying to prep myself to hike more. Keep up your videos, watching here.
Thanks Winston. I push myself as much as I can because I realize one day I won’t be able to.
24 inches of show, teens for temperatures in NE Washington mountains. Good tips for winter since I will not see the ground until late March. Definitely a time to review, repair and replace gear. Good tips in gym workout. DO NOT forget the upper body. Looking forward to 2023 season with my age.....mid 70's.
Yep. You definitely know about the off-season. Stay in shape so you don’t have to get in shape for the hiking season.😁❤️👍
I can absolutely relate to all the upsides and downs. Thank you for bringing this video to us and for being able to enjoy the journey along the way. As someone who was truly into hiking, adventures, and the outdoors, I somehow lost this by living in the city. Thank you for creating this video and sharing it with us. All the best and wish you good luck on your journeys.
Thank you very much. I hope you enjoyed it.
I don’t stop. I love hiking in fresh powder. There is just something about being the first to hit the trail on a snow day. There are less people on the trail and it’s so quiet.
Merry Christmas and thanks
Sounds great. 😁❤️👍
I don't really have a off season since I live by palo duro canyon. but sometimes the body doesn't act right so I listen my body during the recovery process. slow and steady recovery
Great advice.😁❤️👍
All great suggestions. Merry Christmas and good health and hikes in 2023.❤
Thanks Mark. Looking forward to a new year. And new hikes.
Rev, you’re always on point! We’re 6 months from our next trip to Yellowstone - and we are in our 70s! I walk 4 miles on the treadmill four days a week. I picked up some suggestions I had not thought of. Thank you! It’s always good to see you!
Thank you Ann. Good luck on your upcoming Yellowstone trip. 😁❤️
Rev, you helped get me on the trails this year for the first time in my life. I watched other hiking vids and dreamed maybe one day I could go to The Sierras. When I watched your videos you made me realize that I can, and should!!! And I did!!! Thank you!
I'm getting in better shape this winter. Doing therapy for tendinitis for the arm, had a knee problem late last summer while hiking, nothing serious there though. So I'm spending my time getting in shape the correct way - slower! Not just by hiking straight up a hill all the time. I'm 55 now and I think I pushed too hard too soon this year. Probably your fault for getting me all excited! Haha j/k, I just love it!
I'm doing exercises to strengthen ALL the muscles, even those little tiny ones...they all matter. That's why I had knee issues. This year I will be prepared.
Good for you, Mike. Just take your time. The trail ain’t going nowhere. And you don’t have to keep up with anybody.😁❤️👍
@@TheHikingRev I do find myself trying to keep up, especially when practice hiking local trails. Thanks, Rev.
What do I do when I am not able to go hiking? Well...
1. watching Rev's videos ❤
2. browsing for (and buying) new gear
3. camping in my backyard
4. using my sleeping bag as a blanket in my bedroom (no kidding! 😂)
5. cooking outside
6. planning day hikes
7. talking about hiking A LOT
8. reading hiking related books and articles
9. listening to podcasts every once in a while
10. looking through my gallery and gpx-collection of past hikes
11. trying out new ideas for snacks or dehydrated homecooked meals
To be continued... 😂
Wow…those are great ideas. (Especially the first one. 😂) 😁
@@TheHikingRev Isn't it? 🤪😁👌🏻
It’s like you were reading our mind this morning. We were having this same discussion before I saw the notification to this video. We are doing a lot of what you talked about already. However it is really flat in the local area so we have to drive quite a ways to get any hill hiking in. The treadmill elevation thing works but it’s not the same of course. I think the key thing (like with any hobby or goal) is to just keep doing something…whatever works for you. In this case anything physical is good, gear testing and trip planning keep you excited about what’s coming up which in turn keeps you motivated to keep doing something everyday.
Thanks Rev!!
You’re welcome. It’s great to be reminded of the obvious.❤️👍
Thx You Rev!!! From Maine!!
You’re welcome Ray. From California.😁❤️👍
I invested in some snowshoes during REI’s holiday sale. Looking forward to winter hikes!
That sounds great Jonathan.😁❤️👍
😊 So true... I would throw myself out if I wasn't out every single day... Sometimes and, during the week when I'm working, "only" walks around the city but weekends further out..
Keeps us in shape psychically as well as mentally 😊
Thanks a lot for sharing, as always and, enjoy the coming days off - plenty of time for hiking 💕❤️💕
Thanks J. Great ideas!❤️
Excellent video Rev, with lots of good ideas. For colder environments, there is a lot to do... cross-country skiing/snowshoeing or bicycling are two that I immediately think of. Snow camping was a great activity when I was younger but a bit chilling to imagine at present. Sorting through gear in the off-season often leads to me purchasing more gear, which often is useless, thus must be performed with extreme caution. It is usually in the early season when all of the new gear comes out on the market, leading to great consternation if you've already purchased gear. Happy trails to you, Until we meet again. Happy trails to you, Keep smiling until then (compliments of Roy Rogers).
Thank you Kenneth. Great advice. I didn’t mind hiking and backpacking in the cold weather when I was younger. But now I’m freezing at 50°.😂
All good stuff big guy 👍. Always glad to see you out there. Since I'm in the northeast, I do a lot of snowshoeing and cross country skiing during winter. You're such an inspiration and much respect Hiking Rev!🙏
Thank you so much for your kind words.😁❤️👍
Fantastic topic man, great idea for video and you elaborated and explained everything so nicely! Great content!
Thank you so much. I hope you enjoyed the video and was helped by it.😁❤️👍
Could to see the video come up today. Merry Christmas to you and your family. Wishing many blessings for you.
Thank you Judith. Merry Christmas and happy new year to you as well.
Merry Christmas, Rev from East Tennessee
Thanks Don. Merry Christmas to you also.❤️
Thanks Rev! Another informative and inspirational video. During the east coast winters I hike at local state parks as much as I can, and when the weather forecast is nice for a few days I try to get in a short trip to GSMNP or SNP. I love the winters here but also look forward to longer hikes in the spring.
You’re welcome. Yeah I used to like to hike in inclement weather when I was younger. Now I’m just an old grumpy dude.😂❤️👍
Great advice! I lift weights and also use my treadmill. I watch virtual walks/hikes while on the treadmill which takes care of the boredom.
Thanks Ruth. I do the same thing.❤️👍
Merry Christmas Rev to you and your family . Thank you for a great video I saw this in the perfect time to lift my spirits and not to give up 👍🏽👍🏽
Good for you, Yolanda. Merry Christmas to you as well. Thank you.😁❤️👍
Great ideas all, but just stay in shape, or one will have to go through that pain again next year!
So true.😁❤️👍
Wonderful advice! 💚🫶
Thank you very much.😁❤️👍
@@TheHikingRev of course!! Loved the wisdom, 💚
Enjoyable episode. Rev, might I add a comment about diet for your readers? As you know, I professionally managed dieting for cardiac patients as an aspect of my career and so I had this impressive (not) comment prepared about diet failures, yadda, yadda, then decided to cut to the chase. Take a look at Intermittent Fasting (IF), folks. The health maintenance and improvements of doing this, apart from losing weight, if needed, exceed exercise, a statement I do not make lightly. I'm practicing IF for wt loss. It seems like my body appreciates it, like eating this way is how we are wired as humans. It's like a partnership rather than beating my body (and will) into submission. Personally, I am eating for 6 hours 8am-2pm and fasting for 18. Not a good schedule for Christmas! or for a family person. Many choose 12pm-6pm so that meals with families remain intact. PLEASE readers, don't take my word for it, do the research. Regards and have a wonderful Christmas, Rev. GK
As someone who’s been doing IF since Oct 2021, it’s a game changer- esp for a senior like me. I also highly recommend it ( not just for weight loss but for overall good health and longevity).
Thanks Marv for the great advice. I personally practice the 12 PM to 6 PM IF schedule. I always appreciate your expert advice. ❤️👍
Great advice and insight, thanks for posting it. Calorie restriction-IF is the best thing you can do to benefit your health and well being, especially for older folks. IF will make you feel better, think better, clear up health problems and it doesn't cost anything to not be eating-snacking all the time.
Great ideas and inspiration!
Thank you Dorothy. 😁❤️👍
I live in the San Diego county area so weather isn't the issue. Right now the issue is a bad knee that I can't seem to get healed up. Great suggestions though! I definitely need to go through my camping/backpacking gear and sort through it.
I envy you living in San Diego county. My friend Michael Lawrence lives there as well. Hike any time of the year.😁❤️👍
@@TheHikingRev Would that be "Marmalade"? I don't personally know him but I've seen him on your videos and watched a couple of his. My good friend works together with him at REI. She has mentioned him on a couple of occasions.
More good advice. Our off season here in north Texas is July and August when it’s 109° and even then I’ll hit the trail at night and make camp by noon, wait out the heat of the afternoon with a nap get up late evening start out again in the night and repeat. It’s a lot easier to add layers of clothing in winter than to hike naked in the summer.😆
Ain’t that the truth. When I hiked the PCT and it was 114° I would take a siesta between one and four, and then hike the rest of the time. definitely brutal.😁❤️👍
@@TheHikingRev 👍
Hey Rev, I'm just checking in... 😊 I trust all is well that side of the Atlantic.
I saw an article about AAA and thought of you!
Take care!
Thanks Steph. I appreciate you checking up on “the old dude.” I’m doing well. Three stents in my right coronary artery in 2021. A stent to repair an Aorta Aneurysm in 2022. I just hope I can make it through 2023 without any other major health problems. 😂
I do have some hiking plans for this year that involves your side of the Atlantic. Hopefully I won’t have any problems. 😁
@@TheHikingRev Omw it can only be epic! #HikingOnTheOtherSideOfThePond. 😁
Glad you're well Rev! Take care
I’m bound and determined to NOT start next season by starting over, meaning getting in shape again. I’m not good with treadmills or malls or gyms…feels too much like forced exercise. I do play with my toys (gear) and plan next season’s adventures. This year, I bought a season pass to ski, something I haven’t done in years and bought gear to hike or walk in all weather situations. I recognized one of your PCT pics. Kennedy Meadows North. That’s my county, upcountry from here and also inaccessible in the winter if you don’t own a snowmobile.
I loved getting to Kennedy Meadows North. A great trail stop. I guess if you stay in shape you won’t have to get in shape.😁❤️👍
Good ideas! God Bless!
Thank you Clyde.😁❤️👍
Good ideas. U need solutions in the “tool kit” for problem solving of all kinds. Then have the “will” to actualize them.
On closures, for me there’s always been a road walk available to get around. I’ve done enough to feel safe, if not enjoyable, and keep the steps connected. Understandably, that’s not important for everyone. Just a possibility.
Thank you. You got to be always prepared.😁❤️👍
Warkaasaa war jira ah awoowe ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🌻
Thank you Adam. 😁❤️👍
Good stuff Rev. Merry Christmas.
Thank you Tom. Merry Christmas to you as well. ❤️
Happy Holidays Rev.
Thank you Bill.
Another great video, thank you Rev! How's your health doing?
Thanks again Steph. My health is doing great…so far! 😁❤️👍
Good morning Rev!
Good morning Larry.
Good Morning Good Morning!
If you live where it is colder, now is a great time to dial in your layering systems. Current temps for me are ~10 to ~35 degrees this week. I can try different layers and walk with my pack. Makes it easy to determine what works at what temps. You also find out things like that fleece that worked so well when it was cold and sunny, fails completely when it is the same temp but overcast and windy.
Yes. Great advice.❤️
I go skiing. Unfortunately during X-mas it has rained away lots of snow in the Swiss Alps. Therefore I'm kind of stuck now, waiting for fresh snow.
Let it snow, let it snow… 😁🎄❤️
@@TheHikingRev Thanks. I bought the reduced seasonal Ski pass, which was available till mid December, and now I am hoping for some value...
I’d imagine the weather is pretty decent where you live for hiking- year round? We walk daily but of course avoid the mountains until Spring. And we stay home on the occasional ice- snow storms here locally. Can’t take Echo to a gym so we hike the neighborhood if we can’t drive to our favorite trails.
I live in the SF Bay Area now and most of the trails are muddy because of the recent rains.
@@TheHikingRev trails are pretty muddy here six months out of the year 🙂
hi rev , im hoping that saturday will be a reasonable weather day , im planning on doing a 21km hike in Englands peak district ,first one of the year
Good for you Matt! 😁❤️👍
@@TheHikingRev I got up this morning, set out with the enthusiasm of a hound that's just slipped it's leash, I headed up mam tor but was almost blown away with 60 mph winds ( storm Otto) any how I soldiered on and managed a 24 kilometer hike over a mix of easy and hard ground ,there's enough mud on my trousers to plant a potato in , but I loved every minute of it , elevation of 2469 meters ,highest point was 600 meters , it was cold but my clothing kept me warm
@@mattdragonrider7888 Matt…that’s what I call, “dedication.” 😁
I' ll keep on dreaming but the gym ...no thanks !
Regards Max
Thanks Max. 😁❤️👍
Snow on the ground and really cold?? I am all in!
Go for it, Mark.😁❤️👍
Have u thought of hiking the AT or CDT?
Yes. I’d love to hike both trails.
I really enjoy your videos.
Thanks Jim. That makes my day! 😁
