    Thanks for the demo Dave. Mixing it on the paper looks much easier than what I blindly did. 😂😂 It is a bit scary dumping glue onto a watercolor. My stomach did a little flip. 😨😂. Nice protective finish though. Thanks again. Enjoy the barbecue. Rain again here.💙💜

    Thanks Dave, I was wondering how you introduced the chalk. Great DIY piece. Thanks very much. Getting ready for 3 rainy days here in Ohio. Looks like a wet Fathers day. Happy Fathers day to you. Enjoy

    The idea of grinding up chalk sends shivers down me spine.
    Does this work for gouache?

    • @DaveUsherArt
      @DaveUsherArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The chalk is very fine and mixes with gesso very well, it's for chalk lines. I used it a lot when I was planning where to cut and plan carpets in my business.

    Hi Dave. I experimented with the varnish on a piece I wasn’t that concerned about. It disturbed the paint a bit. It had been sitting for a couple of weeks so it was dry. Any ideas?

    • @DaveUsherArt
      @DaveUsherArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't use it on watercolours Joe if that's what you did. I used it dilute to varnish acrylics. A couple of coats and the milky look is a bit scary but it dries transparent

      Dave Usher oops lol. Actually when it dried it looks pretty good.

    Hi Dave.....Well explained. Love your work..........Could this method be used on canvas panels too?

    • @DaveUsherArt
      @DaveUsherArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It would, Mike but if the canvas is unprimed, you should use an acrylic gesso. Most canvases are pre primed with a white acrylic primer

    Enjoy your videos, and a nice tip. I assume PVA glue is the same thing as Elmers glue in the states?

    • @piltthom
      @piltthom 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, that’s correct. Elmer’s glue or student glue, or school glue. When to get it here in the US and nobody knew what I was talking about when I said PVA.

    • @piltthom
      @piltthom 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      PVA glue, or polyvinyl acetate, is also known as school glue or white glue. It can be made at home with ten ounces of water, three tablespoons white flour and one tablespoon of sugar.
      Chill two ounces of water and mix in flour until smooth. Boil the remaining eight ounces of water. Once boiling stir in flour mixture over heat until thick while mixing constantly. Remove from heat and mix in sugar. Refrigerate until cool and the substance is ready to use as glue. This home made glue is as durable and strong as store bought school glue.
      Found this on my search.

    are you able to use PVA without chalk/plaster? what's the purpose of chalk? thanks!

    • @DaveUsherArt
      @DaveUsherArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, the chalk/plaster etc. powder thickens the gesso and makes the painting look as if you've used a lot of paint. Doesn't work with painting knife though. Try it and see. :)

    I wonder if you could put kaolin clay powder in there instead of the chalk and make clayboard?

    Dear Dave
    I lost my recipe for covering an oil on canvas painting with homemade gesso. This must be stable to cover - paint over - with a ‘new’ oil painting. Can you help please. My professor showed me back in the day- she used household Dulux Velvaglo good quality paint, Coldglue / Whiteglue and liquid Glycerine . I forgot the proportions.
    The failed old oil painting will be very dry- even years old . I did this 21 years ago and the ‘new’ oil on canvas shows no signs of instability. Does the glycerine surprise? She said it was essential.
    Looking forward to your reply. Kind regards Adrienne

    • @DaveUsherArt
      @DaveUsherArt  ปีที่แล้ว

      I use 2 coats of white acrylic household emulsion on watercolour paper for oil. I have so many paintings and no stretched canvases to fill the remaining space, Adrienne. You can prime with PVA glue diluted on canvas; also combined with acrylic paint. I only use a spray varnish on oil paintings, and the PVA for acrylic paintings, a couple of coats. :)

      @adriennesilva6707 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DaveUsherArt Dear Dave
      I hope I described my issue fluently! I am speaking about an older already made oil painting I want to cover over with a gesso - Dulux Velvaglo , PVA glue and glycerine. A valuable recipe, however I lost the proportions. This is a way to ‘start over’ . You know about this? I did this 21 years ago and the ‘new’ painting is 100% stable. So in other words I painted over an older oil painting with a gesso ground- just need to be re-informed about the proportions of the Acrylic paint, the PVA glue and the glycerine.
