To the shredder guys. Steve Morse was shredding tastefully before the stupid term “shredding” ever existed. More importantly, he composed beautiful music. Steve Morse is untouchable.

Saw him open, twice, for al, Paco, John, 1981. He kind of stole the show. He came out with them for encore and got a standing ovation.
They all did but the admiration for "the new guy" was palpable. Epic.

I was fortunate enough to see Steve with the Dregs several times in the late 70s/early 80s. He was at the top of his game technically at that time (according to Steve himself) and the way he blended speed with beauty redefined how I looked at music. After 50 years of constantly playing (even on days with a concert he still practiced 2 to 3 hours each day) time has caught up with him and his right wrist is almost totally locked up due to an aggressive type of arthritis. During his time with Purple, he would often open with the Steve Morse Band and then play with Purple (still practicing as much as he did). He is a brilliant song writer and wrote every song for the Dregs. He is one of only 3 guitarists to have won "Best Overall Guitarist of the Year" award 5 years in a row, retiring him from the competition (Steve Howe of YES and Eric Johnson are the other 2). In my will, Highland Wedding is to be played at the funeral.

I forgot to mention that despite the injuries, he continues to play after changing the way he plays.

@@thinkcivil1627 Very good write up. I appreciated the information. You are completely right: his ability to write interesting but enjoyable music surpasses probably all players. Eddie Van Halen was similar though I agree Steve Morse surpasses him in his shear verbosity of style.

Since Jeff Beck has died IMO Steve Morse is the greatest guitarist alive. Not only that, if you ever get a chance to meet & talk to him, one of the nicest guys you could ever talk to. Humbleness exudes from the Guitar God.

One of the most remarkable compositions and outro solos ever laid down. Steve’s many Guitar Player of the Year awards are well earned. This, from the High Tension Wires album, is just a taste of his brilliance, and attention to detail.

Same here. I've been a Steve Morse fan since the late 70s when I saw the Dixie Dregs several times. If you like this song, check out "Hereafter" by the Dixie Dregs ("Dregs of the Earth" album). A Steve Morse Band, or Dixie Dregs, concert is a roller coaster - they play all genres.

It’s always a joy to listen to this sublime piece of music, as is the entire “High Tension Wires” LP. Steve’s work on this 1989 release cemented him as a true master.

It's one thing to be technically fast, but it's another to blend so many "little things" into a song that simply make it. Steve suffered a severe degenerative right wrist injury (bone on bone) over a decade ago, forcing him to change his style, but this song shows why Steve is on a very short list of the best who ever picked up the instrument. I was blessed to have seen the Dregs back in the late 70s/early 80s and I'm still kicking myself for missing the opportunity to see the SMB when they came through about 30 years ago.

There is a clip where Steve played this song on the Ralph Emery Show called "Nashville Now" in the 1980s.You can find it in a video series (parts 1-3) called "Rare Steve Morse Stuff". A lot of it was older VHS, so the quality can be poor in spots, with some repetition of songs, but if you are a SM fan it's worth the watch because of the rare interviews. During the Ralph Emory interview, Steve explained his love for Celtic music. Our Bluegrass came out of Celtic roots when immigrants came to this country years ago. I know it sounds strange, but there is a song Steve wrote for Deep Purple called "The Aviator" and it has a similar feel. You would swear you were listening to a Jethro Tull song and I was impressed not only with the song but by the range of Ian Gillan's voice. I believe it is on their "Purpendicular" album.

This song, and Mountain Waltz (I think), are both amazing AND off the same album, The Introduction, by Steve Morse.
The late T. Lavitz's (RIP) piano solo on Mountain Waltz is my own personal favourite on the album and comes highly recommended by me :-) Beautiful Appalachian sounding music!? Steve Morse is terribly underrated.
