There was a comedy bit back in the Eighties about how black people watch movies --Billy Crystal, I think-- compared to how white people watch movies. Stereotypes become stereotypes because they usually have a big kernel of truth to them. Thankfully this particular black stereotype is nothing less than wonderful.
Fun fact: the look of sheer terror on “Hans’” face when he starts to fall is real. They didn’t tell the actor when they were gonna “drop” him. So that wide eyed look is fully real. This is an awesome movie
@@MJXtubeeah they started the countdown and dropped him mid count instead of at the end where they told him he would be dropped and he genuinely thought the rig broke and he was going to die
The pesky reporter who got punched in the nose? He was also the nasty EPA inspector in "Ghostbusters." Bearer's bonds are basically bank notes / money that have a high dollar amount (like a million per bond), and can be redeemed at any bank, no questions asked. They're not that commonly used in this age of digital transfers, but in the old days of paper money, that's one way you could hold or transfer ridiculously large amounts of cash.
@@arizona_anime_fan Bearer bonds can be issued by anyone, not just governments. All bonds are IOU documents where the issuer promises to pay back the money later, but bearer bonds say the debt must be paid to whomever has the original piece of paper, other bonds have to be signed over by the previous owner. Like if Ford Motor Companies sells cars on credit, the car buyer would need to pay back the credit to the financing division or get the car repossessed. The financing division would pay the car dealership and Ford itself full price up front, then sell bonds to get the cash. When people pay back the loan and interest, the financing division pays back whomever bought the bonds. The bonds would be in practically handled amounts like $10000 each. The bond buyers would typically be banks and pension accounts, so if someone has $100,000 saved for retiring in 30 years, they might put $10,000 into buying a Ford bond due to be paid back with interest in 5 years, then use the payout to buy another etc. They would register ownership with Ford so Ford knows where to send the $10,000 . And obviously need a signature from the previous bond owner to confirm they no longer claim the money. But if its a bearer bond, Ford won't know and have to put a notice somewhere that the bond holders need to mail in their bonds or show them at some office that will pay out the money and mark the bond as "paid". This is how bearer bonds can be used as oversized cash, while registered bonds can't.
Karl was played by Alexander Godunov. He was a huge star in Russia's Bolshoi Ballet. He was an incredible dancer. During a US tour in '79 he contacted authorities and defected (this happened periodically). His wife was also in the Bolshoi. She returned to Russia. He passed away in '95 from hepatitis and alcoholism. He was only 45. It was a sad ending for a very talented person.
My favorite lines: "Yippee-ki-yay MF" and "Come out to the coast, we will get together, have a few laughs" One of the best action movies of all time IMHO.
Few directors have had a string of smash hit action movies like John McTiernan did back in the day. First it was Predator in 1987, then Die Hard one year later, and The Hunt for Red October two years after Die Hard. Those three movies alone were bigger hits than many directors have during their entire careers.
I worked across the street from the Fox Towers in Century City which was used as Nakatomi Plaza. It was surreal to see crashed helicopters and debris which was left in place during filming. As compensation, we all received screening passes to a sneak preview and a bunch of us from work went. It was one of my favorite movie-going experiences and we knew it was a bonifide hit!!!
Interesting note... Reginald VelJohnson, the actor who played "Sgt. Powell" became instantly famous after this film. He went on to star in a sitcom called Family Matters (which brought Steve Urkel to fame).
Many years later, in a TV spy comedy called "Chuck" (played by Zachary Levi) when there was a hostage situation at the Buy More, Al Powell (again played by Reginald VelJohnson) showed up, and it turns out he was the cousin of Chuck's boss. So Chuck and Die Hard are officially in the same world.
A predictable script, no A list actors, standard action movie jokes and the conclusion you expected, put it all together and what do you get - one of the greatest movies ever made. How did that happen? I watch this movie every few years just to remind myself that a good story is a good story. This was so much fun watching you guys enjoy this movie. Loved the movie, loved this reaction.
I think something else that it did is it showed the battle wounds of Willis' character, something action movies didn't really do. It felt more real because we watched as he slowly gets f***d up over the course of the movie. It also did a good job inserting the heartwarming moments, such as when Willis' and Johnson's character meet in person and share a hug like two people who just went through some stuff. Not to mention, the soundtrack was on point. And the Wrath of Khan reference at the end? Genius. I could go on and on, but I think that's an example of why this movie is so beloved.
36:00 - Alan Rickman (Hans Gruber) actually did this fall stunt against a green screen. While he wasn't falling from a building, he still had to fall 40 to 50 feet (which obviously made the actor nervous). Director John McTiernan had his hand on the lever that would drop the actor. He told him he would fall on a count of 3 - but he actually pulled the lever on a count of 1. The surprised look on Alan's face is authentic as he was completely caught off guard. He was very upset about being tricked, but it was definitely worth it in the end. R.I.P. Alan Rickman.
Gotta tell ya, y'alls enthusiasm and expressions are so adorable! I was lucky enough to see this in the theater when it was released. The explosions were massive with the "surround sound" back then. I love reminiscing while watching you guys, seeing and hearing these films and music for the first time. I was lucky enough to live them in real time! Y'all keep your channel alive, I LOVE your personalities!
Asia and BJ, What took the writing in this movie to the next level is the built motivation of John not only trying to save his wife, but trying to change their last moment. So it's not the fight in her office bathroom. The writer was stuck during the development process of the script to find this deeper motivation. Until one day when he almost died driving on the 405 highway in L.A. He had a fight with his wife earlier in the day and thought the last memory she would have of him is the fight they had that morning. This motivation plays out during the quite moments of the film. And gives the film that deeper staying power from just a typical action movie.
McClain's dialogue when talking to himself is very realistic of the coping mechanism cops, firefighters, and military have. And the dialogue between Powell and McClain is also beautiful and realistic of those in high risk careers. We may not know each other, but we know what they are going through and we have each other's backs.
Talking to yourself isn't a bad thing for numerous reasons. I do it and have never been in a high risk job. It's helps with problem solving and stress (venting).
The 80's was full of testosterone, imagination and 'blockbusters'. There's enough material to keep you guys busy for quite some time. Enjoyed this ride with you both.
This was such an important movie to the action genre… You have to understand that at the time, guys like Bruce Willis were not action heroes. And the film was ripped off many many times. Diehard on a bus... SPEED. Diehard on a boat... UNDER SEIGE. Diehard on a plane... PASSENGER 57. Diehard on a mountain... CLIFFHANGER. Supremely influential film
Not bad for a movie that started life as a sequel to Commando with Swarzenegger. Commando two got passed on, and rewritten into Die Hard. Mash it up with The Towering Inferno, add Bruce Willis. Fantastic results.
Fun fact: the scene where Hans falls, the actor Alan Rickman was in a harness and was supposed to be dropped 40 feet on the count of 3. Well, the director wanted the terror on Rickman's face in the slow-mo close-up to be as authentic as possible, so he had him dropped on 2 instead. He wasn't acting 😂
saw this when it first came out and i was living in San Antonio. i can remember coming out of that cold theater into 97 degree weather outside and saying, "WHAT WAS THAT!? that had to be the greatest movie i have ever seen"! 😳😳😳🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥❤❤❤❤❤ one of my all-time favorites...this is gonna be GOOD!!! ☺☺☺
Same here! Walked out of that theatre like, this is the best movie made ever ever ever!!! And that was my FIRST action movie. I didn’t think I would be into that genre (I was more sci fi fantasy at that age), and had no idea that I just experienced one of the best ever made. Loved action ever since.
I grew up to this. As a 1980 baby these are still my fav movies. My dad is so similar looking to Bruce so I always loved him. Now his dementia diagnosis just breaks my heart. 😢
Hey Asia and BJ, this was the 1st movie where the action hero didn't look like Arnold. (As well as one of Bruce's 1st movies) He changed the stereotype of the action hero. It was also Rickman's 1st movie which makes his performance even more awesome. The actor who played the reporter was harassed by ppl in real life for decades after this movie.
This is among the movies that made the 'everyman hero' a prominent theme in American cinema. John McClain wasn't an elite SWAT officer, or Special Forces soldier; he was a normal man with a dangerous job, put into a position where his job skills and determination carry him through a situation where most people would be counted among the casualties. He makes a number of mistakes, and decisions that aren't perfect, which just make the character more believable and relatable.
Before this movie Bruce Willis was known as a comedic actor. He was in a show called Moonlighting with Cybill Shepherd. When this came out, it was like "WHAT?! Bruce Willis as an action hero?! I don't see it!" Boy, was I wrong! Such a great movie!
As Jo March said at the beginning of Louisa May Alcott's 1868 classic, "Little Women": Christmas won't be Christmas without watching "Die Hard". (my feelings: Same.)
This movie has one of best established conflicts between a hero and a villian of all time. McClane and Gruber have an chess match going on where there is a move and a counter move back and forth between them both. Most action films before (and since) had a very simplistic hero vs. villian butting heads plot. Die Hard upped the game on what you could do in an action movie. Then you also add Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber, one of my favorite movie villains of all time.
@@rothed16 I agree, it is a good movie, and I think I'll rewatch soon. Even though I have access to a lot of new movies, I always go back and rewatch movies.
A bearer bond is basically the international version of a cashier’s check. It’s basically exchangeable for currency anywhere that can redeem a bearer bond, and because it’s specifically cash turned over to whoever has it in his possession (the bearer of the bond), it’s virtually untraceable.
I can’t stop laughing, Asia has blank look on her face when something happens and BJ looks to see Asia reaction and does a double take when seeing her blank face lol great reaction
Steven Spielberg was once asked, is there a movie that he had not directed, but he would have liked to claim he did, he replied 'Die Hard' because it was so good.
Arguably the Greatest Action movie ever made John McClain one of the best characters put on film. Y’all reactions are always a good time keep’em coming
Bearer bonds are unregistered securities that function like cash - the 'bearer' (holder) is the owner. No paper trail. If you hold it, you own it. Just like cash. And if you wondered why the tall blond guy moved like a dancer, it's because he was. His name was Alexander Godunov. He was a Russian ballet dancer who defected to the US in the 70s and branched out into movies. Can't wait to see your reactions to the rest of the franchise!
This is what we're talking about when we say CGI ruins movie making. Look how gut punching real everything feels when you have practical effects great acting and a fantastic script.
That look of fear on Rickman's face when he falls is real when they dropped him into an airbag in the studio they told him they were going to count down but dropped him before the countdown to get a real reaction.
“Come out to the coast, we’ll get together, have a few laughs…..” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣…all the lines Bruce & Mr. Rickman give in this flick are classic y’all. Great reaction!!!!
Another great reaction! I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this already or not, but Karl, the big blonde bad guy, in real life, he was a famous classically trained ballet dancer. He nailed his role as a bad guy!
There's a visual joke here that I don't know if anyone has mentioned, but in the scene where Ellis is talking to John over the radio, you can see Karl the henchman pour him a glass of coca cola...clearly something was lost in translation when Ellis asked them if they had any "coke." 🤣
Great video. Fun fact. When Hanz is hanging from the building at the end. The actor who played him was afraid of heights. Now he only fell about 15 feet in real life but the actor wanted to know when they would let him go so he could prepare for the fall. But the director wanted his reaction to the fall to be real so they let him go without telling him... lol
I loved some of her stuff. The Witching Hour series was great, as far as Interview went, got as far as Lestat and one more book after that and then it got too weird. Knew she passed though and I'm always sad when someone who made a cultural impact dies....
Argyle crashes through the garage gate at the end because his limo is already wrecked by his previous heroism against Theo the computer guy. By the way, actor Clarence Gilyard Jr. who played Theo went on to become a regular on TV's Matlock (85 eps) and then Walker, Texas Ranger (196 eps!).
This movie is amazing. A classic of action cinema. And seeing you guys enjoying it so much and just being shocked and surprised by it makes it all the better... I miss this type of movies, the masterfully executed action and set-pieces, keeping you on the edge of your seat, the pacing, the editing, the effects that still hold up more than 30 years later, every single detail taken care of.
The scene where Hans is about to fall from the building, I read the director wanted a good scared reaction shot from Hans as he fell backward. He told the actor he would count to three before the actor was about to fall. Instead, the director told his crew to release the actor at the count of one. The facial expressions of Hans is the real deal as it surprised the actor before his release.
Hands down the best reaction I've seen to Die Hard (and I've seen far too many lol) - you are both extremely sincere with your reactions and I don't get an overperformance kinda vibe or anything of the sort - you're both just locked into the film and it's wonderful. Cheers.

I've seen this movie several times, and I think I'm gonna love it watching with you guys as much as I have ever because of Asia's infectious laugh that I adore. This movie is a classic Bruce Willis blockbuster.
What made Willis into such a star is that he had a completely relatable "regular guy" vibe on screen. Much more so than either Stallone or Schwarzenegger. Another favorite of mine is The Fifth Element. Great action sequences and loved his byplay with Chris Tucker.
One of the great action movies ever. Genre defining. I worked in Century City for years and no one ever called that building by its name, the Fox Tower, it was always the Nakatomi Plaza.
All of the sequels are just as much fun. Another action flick, with Willis staring, that is at least as fun is the "RED" series. Watching you two is almost as fun as watching the flick. Good reaction.
You two make movies so enjoyable! There is not A lot of reaction people on TH-cam that actually find enjoyment in movies! Some of them just react to rip every movie to shreds! But you both enjoy movies and that's what I love! Thank you!

Hi! Glad to see you enjoyed this one; it's a classic! You expressed a little confusion about Ellis calling Hans "Bubby". It's short for "bubalah", a Yiddish term of endearment; Hart Bochner, the actor, is Jewish, and just threw it in for extra cringe/smarm (cringe because Ellis had literally just used a slur for the people who speak Yiddish not a few moments before). Alan Rickman's look of confusion at the word was genuine, too, as he'd never heard it before and wasn't sure how Hans should react to it!
Lots of references to Westerns and cowboy stars. You get nods to High Noon (Gary Cooper left alone to fight a team of bad guys, and he gets Grace Kelly) and Roy Rogers (McClane's favorite - "Call me Roy."; "Happy Trails, Hans." - "Happy Trails to You" is Roy's TV show theme song). You also get Marshal Dillon (lead character played by James Arness on TV's Gunsmoke), John Wayne and who can forget "Yippie-Ki-Yay MF"? The latter is probably derived from "Yippie-Yi-Yo-Ki-Yay," a refrain from the vintage song "I'm an Old Cowhand."
This was Alan Rickman first movie role. Him falling was basically authentic, he was held over something that was going to catch him. Only thing was they let him go early so he was unaware. So his reaction is real

@@lynnesears6254 I agree
There was a comedy bit back in the Eighties about how black people watch movies --Billy Crystal, I think-- compared to how white people watch movies. Stereotypes become stereotypes because they usually have a big kernel of truth to them. Thankfully this particular black stereotype is nothing less than wonderful.
Watching someone reacting to a movie is the next best thing to being able to see it for the first time again.
That hug between John and Al is one of my favorite buddy hugs of all time. Not a boring movie, is it? 😁 Great reactions, as always!
This is an absolute masterpiece. The best action flick of all time. Today drama's don't even have the character development that this has.
It's the best Christmas movie of all time. It just happens to also be an action flick.
@@ScottLovenberg I always like to say that if Die Hard isn't a Christmas movie, Home Alone isn't a Christmas movie.
Fun fact: the look of sheer terror on “Hans’” face when he starts to fall is real. They didn’t tell the actor when they were gonna “drop” him. So that wide eyed look is fully real. This is an awesome movie
The story I heard was they told him they would count to '3' then drop him, but they dropped him on 2, lol
@@MJXtubeeah they started the countdown and dropped him mid count instead of at the end where they told him he would be dropped and he genuinely thought the rig broke and he was going to die
Rickman was PISSED about it too. Any mention of this scene annoyed him.
Directors will often try to get a more "honest" emotion out of their actors by putting them in a legitimate fearful, joyous, somber, etc, situation.
The pesky reporter who got punched in the nose? He was also the nasty EPA inspector in "Ghostbusters."
Bearer's bonds are basically bank notes / money that have a high dollar amount (like a million per bond), and can be redeemed at any bank, no questions asked. They're not that commonly used in this age of digital transfers, but in the old days of paper money, that's one way you could hold or transfer ridiculously large amounts of cash.
all US issued bonds are $1000 each (except for treasury bonds), but everything else you said about bearer bonds is correct.
Oh, I thought they were talking about Barry Bonds! jk jk jk 🤣
Thanks for posting this info. I was a fan of A.G. also may he rest in 🕊

He's a Roy Rogers fan. :)
There were 5 Die Hard Movies. 1988, 1990, 1995, 2007, and 2013. Bruce Willis stared in all of them.
Few directors have had a string of smash hit action movies like John McTiernan did back in the day. First it was Predator in 1987, then Die Hard one year later, and The Hunt for Red October two years after Die Hard.
Those three movies alone were bigger hits than many directors have during their entire careers.
And a Bond in the day...?
...Aaaand then he was convicted of wiretapping his employees.

Winslow!
Yeah, they know that.
Family Matters is technically a spin off of Perfect Strangers, soooooo..... that means..... ?
He was in Turner and Hooch as well
A predictable script, no A list actors, standard action movie jokes and the conclusion you expected, put it all together and what do you get - one of the greatest movies ever made.
The director counted to three, and told him that there wouldn't be a "four"! LOL
Gotta tell ya, y'alls enthusiasm and expressions are so adorable! I was lucky enough to see this in the theater when it was released. The explosions were massive with the "surround sound" back then.

Alan Rickman’s first film; however he was a veteran stage actor. Amazing job by him!
McClain's dialogue when talking to himself is very realistic of the coping mechanism cops, firefighters, and military have. And the dialogue between Powell and McClain is also beautiful and realistic of those in high risk careers. We may not know each other, but we know what they are going through and we have each other's backs.
Even though my hubby and are no longer in the army we still do that. Lol
Talking to yourself isn't a bad thing for numerous reasons. I do it and have never been in a high risk job. It's helps with problem solving and stress (venting).
@@NeuroticNicky87 yes, but in the context of this movie, it is a coping mechanism.
Wow, that's a very interesting fact I never knew about. You learn something new every day.
There's nothing wrong with talking to yourself because it's a stress reliever. It's time though to get help though if you answer yourself.
I do love Under Siege and Cliffhanger.
Is that Patrice you're somewhat quoting?
Not bad for a movie that started life as a sequel to Commando with Swarzenegger. Commando two got passed on, and rewritten into Die Hard. Mash it up with The Towering Inferno, add Bruce Willis. Fantastic results.
Passenger 57 was alright though. Lol
Don't forget "Air Force One" with Harrison Ford.
"GET OFF MY PLANE!"
The actor who played the reporter is William Atherton. He was probably harassed for playing Walter Peck in Ghostbusters too.
He (William Atherton) also played the prick EPA guy in the original "Ghostbusters", who ordered the storage facility shut down.
Before this movie Bruce Willis was known as a comedic actor. He was in a show called Moonlighting with Cybill Shepherd. When this came out, it was like "WHAT?! Bruce Willis as an action hero?! I don't see it!" Boy, was I wrong! Such a great movie!

If nobody else has suggested it yet, The Last Boyscout is another great Bruce Willis action movie and a classic with lots of memorable lines.

A bearer bond is basically the international version of a cashier’s check. It’s basically exchangeable for currency anywhere that can redeem a bearer bond, and because it’s specifically cash turned over to whoever has it in his possession (the bearer of the bond), it’s virtually untraceable.
Is that what Eddie Murphy's friend who got murdered in Beverly Hills Cop had?

Bearer bonds are unregistered securities that function like cash - the 'bearer' (holder) is the owner. No paper trail. If you hold it, you own it. Just like cash. Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber
Alan Rickman is the best.
Great video. Fun fact. When Hanz is hanging from the building at the end. The actor who played him was afraid of heights. Now he only fell about 15 feet in real life but the actor wanted to know when they would let him go so he could prepare for the fall.
But the director wanted his reaction to the fall to be real so they let him go without telling him... lol
Hopefully they get around to watching interview with the vampire. Not to many people know that Anne rice passed away. She was my favorite author.
I loved some of her stuff. The Witching Hour series was great, as far as Interview went, got as far as Lestat and one more book after that and then it got too weird. Knew she passed though and I'm always sad when someone who made a cultural impact dies....
I wish whoever did queen of the damned actually read the book. Think it was called lestat.

What a movie "when Alexander saw the breadth of his domain, he wept. For there were no more worlds to conquer. The benefits of a classical education."
One of the best action movies ever! Watching Asia's reactions during the movie was PRICELESS. 🙂
This was Alan Rickman first movie role. Him falling was basically authentic, he was held over something that was going to catch him. Only thing was they let him go early so he was unaware. So his reaction is real
