  • Quitting video games changed my life. In this video I share the seven things you should expect after you quit playing video games. These are the seven things that can cause us to relapse if we're not aware of them, so it's best to prepare beforehand and know how to respond when they occur.
I also share the three steps you should take if one of them does. I hope this helps and if it does, make sure you hit “thumbs up” and connect with us below.

Just want leave my expirience with game addiction here. I've been playing video games for about 16 years. It drained so much life from me that I didn't even realize how much video games distract me from my life purpose and goals. I was angry and frustrated on myself. I tried many times to quit playing video games, but I always get back to them. It's like sick addiction. This addiction pulled me away from my goals and success so many times. I'm 22 years and I still didn't finish college, unemployed, gained weight, emotionally unstable and have family who can't understand my struggles. I'm just trying to get everything back to normal and I hope I'll make this time because it's never too late. Where's will, there's way. I'm just so thankful that I realized that through strong will and gratitude I can make it and be positive.Peace, Soul Dreamer! :)

I like and appreciate your videos. You are not condescendingly telling everyone to stop playing video games. You are not pointing down at people who play. You are saying that there is a whole world out there to see and experience that excessive gaming can steal from us! We're being robbed of natural dopamine-releasing activities. All things in moderation, but for those who become addicted it's far better to walk away! Replace with healthy activities rather than punish. Good video. I've already quit all of my vices--caffeine, internet browsing, facebook, I started reading--just need to move on from video games!

So I am on Day 4 of the Game Quitters Challenge, and I find purpose is a very important concept. I think cravings can actually come from a desire for purpose, and games or whatever addiction you had before give you that "fake" sense of purpose.
Now, once you start searching for a new purpose, you don't see immediate results with your new activities, so you start doubting if you are on the right path.
But knowing all you really crave is purpose and meaning, you realize that you might as well do something cool and lasting instead of chasing a "fake" purpose from Games (or whatever else it was you want to get away from).

Games just feel like a waste of time for me now. I work in a game store and had this epiphany. The gaming community it pretty toxic, especially the console war fanboys or the gamers who act like entitled babies. Most of my friends and co workers spend all day playing games. There is nothing I have against them personally, but I was recently playing a Zelda marathon, and I love that series, but I have not been feeling it anymore. Breathe of the Wild took 260 hours and over $400 with those stupid amiibo the completionist in me wanted to attain. It was a great experience but it wasn't worth ALL of that in hindsight.
I no longer resonate with my friends or coworkers who play games all day. I never was as addicted as them, but now I am even less so. I just feel like games are an overpriced way for you to waste you own time and creativity. If I want to escape, I can write a book, imagine, or make TH-cam videos. I can channel that creative energy into a physical manifestation of something productive, instead of living in someone else's creative world.
Also, I don't see how someone could relapse if they actually sell their games. Saying "I quit gaming" but still owning game systems and games is like an alcoholic saying "I don't drink anymore" but have liters of it in the basement fridge or bar. Just sell everything and you won't relapse. I know it is hard because many of these games we grew up with. My childhood wouldn't have been the same without Mario, so my house without Mario, aside from a plushie, might feel a little sad. There is also the fear of "What if I want to game again someday?" But if you really want to play a certain game so bad, just buy the system and the handful of games again. Honestly though, I have just felt my intuition telling me to leave it all for good. I cried at the thought of giving away my childhood and the thousands of wasted hours, but those games need to go too.

I have spent a lot lot lot of time playing this game meeting a large variety of people. All of which i have never met in person. I've hit a point where I do not wish to play this game or any game similar to it much at all anymore. I decided I'm going to quit playing video games and focus on my goal of being an artist. Even though I love video games, I spend way too much time playing them, putting everything else on the back-burner. I don't even play online games but it doesn't matter. I am addicted regardless. I have played so many games and while there are still so many more I have never played that I would like to play (plus new games coming out all the time), I ultimately decided that focusing on my goals is more important to me. Life is short which is why I feel that I need to prioritize. Also, I'm not really the kind of person who can just do something in moderation, it's sort of all or nothing with me. Anyway, thanks for the videos, they have helped me.

Thank you, Cam. I have been struggling with video game addiction for at least a couple of years now. I have tried to quit in the past only to return in a more intense way. Your website and your videos have helped me answer the eternal question that I had, which was whether or not I was truly addicted. I realized that I am and that I have poured the time and effort into video games that I wish I had poured into learning new things and bettering myself. These videos are a great help. I got rid of my steam account and sold all my handheld games today. This is day 3 of being a gamequitter and so far I have begun to read more, philosophy especially, and am beginning to recognize more and more things that I am interested in. However, I am still struggling to get myself to read at some points and there are times where I still feel as though I am searching for other meaningful things to do. I suppose that I will find those things in time, especially with school right around the corner. I just wanted to say that I really appreciate what you are doing to help us and make the addiction feel legitimized. Your actions inspire me.

Today's games are just all created to entice you to spend as much money as possible and to give them all your free time. It's a vicious downwards spiral if it gets a hold of you. I'm 35 now and I've been addicted for decades. I have social anxiety, low self esteem and I pretty much feel ashamed about myself and my life all the time. It has prevented me from finding a girlfriend and from beeing happy in life. I realize now that the only way I'll ever be able to become happy is if I become a confident person. I'll never become that if I continue playing video games and watching TH-cam videos all day. Whether it's brushing my teeth more often, meditating, going for a hike, etc... I need to do everything I can to become as confident as I can be. Finally I'm determined to change. One step at a time.

I find the illusion of that instant reward to be the hardest thing to break. That sense that you can repetitively immerse yourself in a world where the results, positive or negative, are predetermined and so even if or when you fail, you know the exact way to change those negative results into positive ones. This leads to more and more time spent playing video games because the more you play and detach from the people or objects around you, the more you need that reliable stimulus to give you a sense of purpose. Good that channels like this are addressing and decompressing what is a complicated and serious issue for a lot of young people; especially young people who may be more introverted and prefer to spend time by themselves.

PC gaming was my treat for staying sober from alcohol - all good, but now I am beyond the booze and am stuck with this new addiction. 3 years now (thanks in no small part to the pandemic) and I wake up and immediately boot up the PC, and am on it 15/16 hours I'm up every day. My living situation is unideal to say the least, but I'm checked out all day. I have missed several windows of opportunity because the natural drives to achieve are simulated and sated through CS:GO, etc. I have a big study opportunity coming up that I have just about missed, but I want to change. I have have promised my brother this PC and am priming myself to quit this thing and hopefully my phone too so that I can focus on studying. Funny how the addiction framework is similar, if not the same, across different types of addictions. Thank you sir, I'll check out your other vidz! Cheers! .

    How to quit gaming:
Get to college or mid 20's.
    Get a girlfriend or boyfriend
    Go to work.
    Cook dinner.
    Clean up or something.
    Work out.
You now can respect games for the brief safe haven from reality they provide, since you only have an hour left of your day left. Moderation is key.

+MotherFuckah Jones -the girlfriend bit I tick the rest, I still found myself playing games, but the worst part is I played until late at night along with my friends, you would be surprised how many people who are at uni still binge game at night even though they have work to do the next day, (being a chemistry student sometimes quite dangerous work if you aren't alert). They don't particularly want to, it's just they loose track of time or suffer from the "one more level syndrome". I personally needed to get away from them as they prevented me doing the other things I like in the short free time periods I have and they kept me up until late. Yes I acknowledge some people can play in moderation but others no matter how hard they try really struggle with that.

@@ismaeel747 I notice it when I was in my 20s yrs, being able to do things into the nite, & then be able to recover the next day, or in my next sleep. "Burning the candle at both ends" I did that with my job, taking classes at nite, going to clubs on Fri & Sat nite, & dating. When I reached 30 yrs "something" happened. I would come home from work feeling so exhausted I wanted to climb into bed & sleep. Too tired to make meals. Lost concentration at work. Memory problems. It was addiction I had to all the good attention from men, excitement at the clubs, love of dancing, staying up too late at nite. I became sick. Doctor diagnosed me with extreme exhaustion, allergy to alcohol, basically I was killing myself to be PERFECT in every one's eyes. Had to give it up, really tough, took long time for my health to come back. Yes, I had lost track of myself in running a treadmill of popularity. Getting off that vicious addictive cycle saved me.

With lots of videos searching for ways how to stop or reduce the amount of gaming, I think I might just stop playing them now. And it's really tempting to delete all my games like No Man's Sky, Destiny 2, Minecraft, Star Wars BF2, etc. But I did delete all of them a day ago, and feel like craving to play one of them now, but I've been playing a lot of video games since 2008.
It's getting in the way of things I truly wanted to do, and that gaming IS really addicting if you're not careful with your time, and gained very little to no benefit from them.
Now I just need to replace those bad habits with a skill or learn Spanish, play a sport or something I might just do. :)
    Thanks for the video.

Something we need to acknowledge is life stressers that contribute to gaming addiction. If it didn't start that way, I'm sure at some point it might end up that way. Bad home life, other addictions (alcohol, drugs, etc), turbulent family and friends, low self esteem, etc and how all that can be reason to play games and distract yourself from the things not up to par in your life.

I have found that there is so much more to life than video games. Ever since I quit there has been an endless discovery of new hobbies and things to do. Learning a new language, going for a hike or walk in the park, working out at the gym, riding a bike, going to the cinema ... the list goes on and on! I only regret that there was no one to tell me these things earlier.

I don't have any gamer friends. I don't count random strangers who add me in an online games as friends because i've never met them in person and never will, but if your friends don't understand your need to quit then you it might make you wonder if they are your true friends or not. My friends have been really supportive of me doing this.
And as for relieving boredom, I have plenty of movies and tv shows to watch, as well as opportunities to go outside due to the lockdown here no longer being in place.

People can get addicted to many, if not, all things. Addiction runs heavy in my family but in all cases it takes the form of drug and alcohol use, I've lost many members to this affliction. In my mind I've prided myself of not using harsh chemicals. I will not touch anything besides the occasional marijuana and I don't even like drinking, but gaming is an entirely different beast for me. It started when I was very young and has since been the only thing I ever seemed to enjoy doing in my spare time, and so, that is what I did for many years. I have tried to quit many times but this time is serious. For too long and for reasons I consider are not my fault given my circumstances, I have let this beast control me, not knowing what it was or about the onslaught of problems its caused me over the years which always seemed normal to me. It robbed me of most of my childhood that I will not be able to get back, its costed me relationships, experiences, entire days and everything in between. Something hasn't felt right since I graduated high school, it feels like I'm stuck in limbo, working low end jobs with crappy pay, wandering aimlessly through the day with nothing but misery to accompany me and no direction or solid thoughts, and I believe, this addiction is to blame for all of it. Only within the past couple years I've started to realize how much of a problem this is and how much of a problem it could be to many others. I'm not sure who will see this but I hope it guides someone in the right direction and it helps me feel just a little bit better getting it out there. Addiction, including gaming addiction, is an absolute bitch and it's a shame our society practically forces these kinds of things on us, especially from a young age or upon people who are naturally prone to it as my family is. My heart goes out to anyone else who is dealing with these things. Stay strong brothers and sisters.

I have a question that you might want to talk about if you haven't already. How do you reconcile abandoning the gamer identity? I've identified as a gamer for most of my life, spending most of my time playing games, reading articles about games, and even working on games. It seems almost like I'm betraying my own self image by trying to move away from it so completely. Today is day 1 of my 90 day detox by the way, so I'm still struggling with whether or not I'm even going to try and do it, so this is one of the things that has been on my mind.

Is it necessary to start a journal online? I mean, I used to journal before but then gaming began to distract me. I felt more connected to myself and my feelings back then. Basically it made me feel better about myself and more confident. But the idea of sharing your thoughts for everybody to see kinda makes me uncomfortable. Even if I did, there's no way I'd be able to write as freely as I would on my own thus taking a bit off of the experience.
Other than encouragement and connecting with people having the same problem with gaming, why do you think it'd be better to journal online than just at your own desk?

    Dear Me 3 years ago:
Congrats bro we did it! You didnt really quit gaming, more like hugely reduced from 18 hours/day to 1 hour/week, still new success. You quitted on Lol, Dota and Steam but didnt uninstalled.
And 1 year from your present you have been constantly lifting until this day of corona virus outbreak (dont worry about it). You cant lift because gyms are closed but you are now learning some home workout. You have been lifting weights like crazy 150/330/200. Its pretty below average in lifting community but a hero when you step in your campus and hey that beat the hell out of zero.
Diet meh not that much although you are now into macro caculating. Its really hard, it better to constantly lift. As long as you eat clean and workout hard you wont gain that much weight.
You are now a student leader. You training in speech class had now paid off. Bro this huge, the days of soltitude is over. Everyone is now your friend and this time when someone say Hi to you, your now embarassed because you forgot their name. In the bottom of your heart you are still an introvert. It is not a bad thing thats just you. Just dont let it get in your head remember it for serving people not us.
And public speaker, you join Toastmasters 2 years ago and build solid confidence brother. First time speech in public speaking is really frightening and after many practice you wont even recognize yourself. Heck you even competed internationally in debate in Indonesia.
And yea your are living a life. Some bros and girls are now noticing but sadly still no girlfriend because your to much focused on grinding hahaha but we will get there. The girl that dump you right now, she come right back after you 2 years after and am still deciding what to do.
About family bro, fam relationship is really good now. From the disappointing child to the bread winner. You are a real phoenix metaphor literally and figuratively. (and you can check your before and after images like woah)
The path is hard and people are not expecting from us which is a good thing so you can just focus. You will still make mistake along the 3 year road and thats ok. Be objective in your goals and desire and move on, you will get there. Stay motivated and hungry, because I know you will.
    Sincerely,
    You 3 years from future

@@imranuddin1782 I felt exactly the same way. The depression you get makes everything seem cold and bland. You will just have to be patient for your life to get back on track but you can do several things to accelerate this process. Think; Studying, reading books, socialising with new people and people you know. Also try setting simple goals like for example sleeping more or exercising. Personally I started being more spiritual and praying to focus my mind forwards and be happier and clearer but I'm not trying to force anything onto :)

Another one I would add to the three steps could even be linked into point no.3 - that time of reflection, look back and see if over time the journal quality changes. And even in the quality of the day - does does not having gaming feel compared to when/if a relapse does happen? often when we cease a certain behaviour and then go back into it there can be a familiarity and a comfortable feeling, but how comfortable is that feeling truly because if we have a record of feeling better in the non-gaming days and then suddenly have a dip in quality in the gaming days then that shows that our choices to not game bring about far greater support in our lives and that is worth appreciating!

Quit games for 3 weeks, and then I played some game whose name I am not gonna take, (just in case, you break your addiction yourself for those games), starting over again

From what you said it seems like video game addiction, and combatting it have many parallels with depression

    • @GameQuitters
      @GameQuitters  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

+Ali Convoy Yes there are many similarities and research also suggests too much gaming can lead to depression (and vice versa.)

Don't allow yourself to be addicted to anything , gaming is just a hobby like any other hobby , moderation is everything , i play video games and I take care of my food , i cook , i go to gym and I train really hard and I just graduated from college with very good degree , the problem is when you put your time and effort in one thing and forget about anything else , it's a psychological issue in the first place soo the button line of you are addicted to anything treat your addiction and then do not allow yourself to be addicted to something the will not help you to be the strongest version of yourself.

The only reason someon'd quit playing would be if he/she is addicted and directly depends on it on a daily bases, I do play, but I've found a balance in order for it not affecting my life in a hole.

Did 16 hours a day give you dark circleS?
I've tried everything these past 2 years to try and get rid of my dark circles, every diet going, 3 meals a day, mediterranean, vegan, everything and nothing works!
However I game 4 hours at least per day and sit before a computer for a good 7 hours, did 16 hours a day give you dark circles? I get good sleep but nothings getting rid of them. I went 2 weeks technology free but it made no difference :(

Reasons why to stop games completely vs setting time limits or used as a reward
    1. 15 minutes turns into 3 or more.
    2. I would rather spend the time writing a novel or my life story or writing my grandkids a bedtime story instead of just reading the usual ones made by anyone but me.
    3. I said I would clean my house and get caught up on important paperwork and use the game as a reward. Well, it's not completely messy but not how I imagined and paperwork...no.
Clearly it's not a reward but a tool to procrastinate.

Oh, and something else: I find that the days when I stop doing a habit are very predictable for me. The first "down" comes three weeks after I start, then 2 months, 6 months, one year... so I can prepare ahead of time for storm coming about.
