  • Slow-moving bicycle safety film shot in Glendale and Burbank, California by a family-owned film production company. Encourages boys and girls to "drive their bicycles" and prepare for becoming automobile drivers by learning to practice the "rules of the road." Good views of the mid-1950s suburban Southern California landscape.

    This public service announcement was made by my grandfather John Sullivan! My dad played "Bob" and the other kids were my aunts and family/neighborhood friends.

    This video should STILL be mandatory viewing in schools all over lol.
    None of these rules have changed, but everybody seems to have forgotten them lol.

    Ride your bike like you drive a car. This boy is on to something. Ride with traffic not against it and no fast shortcuts. Listen up BMX riders or Fixies. Love this dorky film!

    When we were 13, on my friends dad farm was a old 47 plymouth. George was 14 so he drove and we went to the drive in. We thought we were cool! That was in 1960.

    Such a sad change from then to now. Many school systems don't allow students to ride bikes to school, let alone have riding lessons.

      They "don't _allow_ "? How does *that* work?
      My husband rode his bicycle to school in the mid-1970's (this was before he got his driving license). He lived in a rural area; and many of the roads leading from the residential areas to school grounds back then were made up of sand, dirt and gravel. Kids take much for granted nowadays.

    Dad got that bald spot; it's mesmerizing 4:10. It's also interesting that cycling was part of youth but never an activity taken up by adults. Couldn't dad get to work by cycling? Also you can see how priority is focused on the cars, no bike lanes.

    This 1955 cycling film is pretty good with its emphasis on *driving* your bicycle. The only thing that bothers me is the door-zone bike driving demonstrated in at 3:40 and the expectation that cyclists should be able to stop if a door opens in their path.
    You wouldn't drive a car in the door zone where an opening door poses only material damage to your car. So why should you drive your bike there when an opening door could be fatal?

      The safe zone is 5 feet, taking the lane if need be.

  • @brhino42

    Great video, except for the door zone advice. Sorry, but you can't stop fast enough to avoid a door opened in your path--so you should never, ever ride there. Thanks, hugglescake, for pointing out what should be obvious (though it's equally obvious many people don't know): you would never drive your car in the door zone, so don't drive your bike there.

    • @garyquail2347
      @garyquail2347 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@daan9211 let's see if I can help you with this question with a answer well I believe back then when bicycling was just getting started back around in 1930s especially when racing I believe the helmets were made out of leather with padding and they were used by many bicycle Racers back then in the era when many riders would race on fixed gear bikes let's say on a oval track or a group of riders would race in many staged road races back then the leather padded helmet back then went up until I believe through the early 70s until a manufacturer of motorcycle helmets by the name of Bell came out with a helmet that was light enough for bicycle racing but it was awkward by Design and very uncomfortable on a hot day and other manufacturers make that hard shell plastic helmet up until I believe it was either early eighties or mid-80s that a revolution came out in helmets buy a guy by the name of Jim Gentes in Santa Cruz California and the company was called giro that set the standards in helmet design by making them out of foam with a special lightweight cloth cover that was designed to protect the writer from serious head injuries to this day now helmet manufacturers have increased their designs by making it easy on the writer or cyclist to enjoy the comfort of not knowing that you're wearing a helmet of today.

    Yes, remember to always lead with your head because, should an emergency stop be required, your head will instantly stop you when it hits a wall or a car or even the pavement... You should always realize that the final safety considerations are much improved by a good sense of sarcasm.
