Down the Gasoline Trail (1935) How Fuel Goes Through An Engine

  • Great film of how a gasoline engine works.
    Cartoon showing what happens to a drop of gasoline from the time it flows into the gas tank to when it is exploded in the engine cylinder. This "fantastic voyage" through a glisteningly clean Chevrolet engine is an excellent example of the soft-sell industrial, where the product that's promoted is hardly ever mentioned by name.

    A lot of commenters are mentioning leaded gas. It was added to the gas as an octane booster to prevent engine knocking, same thing is done today but with different chemicals (Knocking is when the gas in the cylinder ignites just from the compression of the fuel/air mixture. Octane boosters make the ignition temperature higher.)

    • @zOiNhUh
      @zOiNhUh 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wait... Didn't leaded gas became more common after the war? You know, there were so many flathead engines with low compressions, rendering them suitable to lower octane ratings.

    • @Bartonovich52
      @Bartonovich52 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The really old flatheads like the Model T had such low compression that they could run on anything. Gasoline, kerosene, diesel if you could find it.
      But by the time of the flathead V8 compression ratios had risen from 4:1 to well over 6:1 requiring higher grade gasoline. It was still difficult (and expensive) to make high octane fuel so lead was used even in gasoline well below 87 back in the day.
      Of course it’s not the good old days for me. Aviation fuel still has lead. It’s 100 octane but even 80/87 until it was discontinued was leaded. Lots of time spent digging lead deposits out of spark plugs with a dental pick.

    • @roysterfutrell8889
      @roysterfutrell8889 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Strictly functionally, steam engines still actually work better for certain uses (like drilling oil wells) but are never used because of the cost. Reciprocating steam engines are extremely simple and eady to troubleshoot when they have a problem. They are enormously powerfully with 100% torque even at zero rpms. They need no transmition. But again, they cost too much to operate.

    Death is never easy, especially of one so young, but I take comfort in knowing that at least you had a relatively peaceful journey. No high pressure fuel pump squishing you and whipping you around, no injector nozzle blasting you out at high velocity. You didn't have to suffer taking the EGR path where you'd see all your buddies in their last throws of life just to be burned some more, and then you peacefully lofted out into the air without being incinerated in one of those evil catalytic converters. Had you lived to a ripe old age you would have suffered much more.
    RIP Drop.
