A feature I find really useful of pairing a chest strap (non-Garmin apparently work as well) is to record breathing rates while exercising. Some Garmin watches will use that to automatically detect your lactate threshold and update whenever you do a workout that changes it. Very useful to find your zone 2 and keep it constantly updated.
@@catalin5218 If you pair a Forerunner or some other Garmin watches to a chest strap you will be able to do a guided workout to determine your Lactate Threshold. Once you do that your Garmin can update it every time you go above it and it detects it. Of course you need a chest strap every time. What I do is wear a chest strap when I do intervals or threshold runs. For tempo or zone 2 I don’t wear it as you don’t go above your threshold.
The best video on Garmin HR straps I've ever seen, and I've been using one of these for at least a decade. The old HRM Duals didn't have BT, good to know they are upgraded now
@@DesFit I have a question. If I have the strap on and its connected to my watch to display my live HR. Will my garmin watch display the HR coming from the strap and ignore the HR sensor on the watch?
I use a Polar Verity around my upper arm connected to my Forerunner/ Edge and have never had any issues. I switched to an optical sensor because my chest strap sensor continuously over-read - it used to give me an average HR of over 200 for activities. A friend of mine who was a doctor explained that some people’s hearts can give off additional electrical pulses when working hard (there was a medical term but I forgot it) which confused chest HRMs that counted it as an extra beat. I was put through some tests while connected to an ECG machine whilst wearing my HRM which showed that it was over-reading at when I was working hard. That was back in 2013, so chest HRMs may have solved this now; but, the optical one works for me and I am. It tempted to spend the money on a new chest strap just to find out.
Thanks for the video! Just a quick tip for replacing the battery on HRM-TRI. Place the new battery backwards, remove and install in the correct position. This fixes issues with pairing. Also never tight too much the screws, specially the top right one, because of an issue with the plastic structure, it can crack, water can come in and demage the sensor for good.
Also the HRM + Pro collects intensity minutes if you want to leave your watch at home for a cycle with a bike computer, or if you wear it zwifting and let zwift upload to garmin connect while your watch charges
I bought the HRM-Pro Plus a few months back and use it a lot i.e. running, swimming, but I mainly purchased it to track HR for Jiu-Jitsu & MMA. It's been great for those types of activities, without wearing a watch. I only wish that I could log that data to an activity in the app. The only work around is to create an activity and manually input the data from the HMR-Prp + But regardless, it's still a great device.
Wow, Dez, this video fills a gap. I'll send it to many people in the next few years I think 🙂 Also, I thought I pretty much knew everything, but I was mistaken 😀
Thank you for the comparison. I have a 920xt with the HRM Tri and the HRM Tri is done for I believe. I’ve had it and the watch for 7 years and I’ve had an issue with the strap staying connected recently. I’ve been looking at replacing it and have been wondering which strap to get. I already have the dual and the swim and they still work great. Hopefully I’ll be upgrading my watch soon as well. Either the 945 or the new 955. Crossing my fingers.
Since summer (basically after HRM-Pro+ release) both HRM-Pro and HRM-Pro+ support up to 3 Bluetooth connections simultaneously (for example to an Apple Watch, a treadmill and an iPad running Zwift at the same time).
Hi Des, great informative video thanks! Quick question, at about 8:50 you talk about recording HR information without the watch. Does this also include if you're working (i.e. not a recognised activity)? I'm a Firefighter and have often wondered about recording some data during calls but don't like to wear my watch. If I understand you correctly would HR, HRV, Resp Rate, all be downloaded to my Instinct 2 when I get back to station, filling in the blank from when I removed my watch? Thanks heaps!
There's two ways this could work. If you do not manually start an activity on your watch but just wear the strap, the HRM Pro/Pro Plus would store your heart rate and steps which would then be synced with Garmin Connect on your smartphone which would then be accounted for in your daily calories. However if you did start an activity on your watch, your heart rate data during the activity could then be downloaded later when you go to save your activity (and can even be done later if need be). But with the latter, that would create a separate, timed activity and not sure how you would best classify a fire call :) For that scenario just wearing the strap and not starting an activity could be the best but totally up to you! 👍
I bought a HRM-Pro to go with my Epix and had to return it to Garmin as it added almost 1k to every 5k of running I did😮 change to the dual now and all is good..
Great co tent as usual. I had the hrm pro plus and it started to ooze this bad stink after a week of use, all cleaning procedures followed, vinegar, detergent, light soap, sun treatment and nothing worked. Garmin replaces the unit just for the problem to resurface again. Garmin refunded me and I discovered that am not the only one. Many are commenting about that on garmin page. Those might have leak that is causing that. Don’t have this problem on any of the other heart rate belts.
Hi Des, do you think chest hair could interfere with the strap’s sensors, if yes, would it be better to shave just below the sensors ? Very useful video thanks !
I love garmin HRM-pro, used for a year and before that I had HRM run and tri.. but it's the third one that stop working. Use for ciclyng and running, and eventually on a triatlhon race I use for swim. I don't know why that's happening, I changed the battery exactly how you show but I'm still having problems. I will test Polar H10 and I hope it will live longer.
Very helpful as usual. Thanks Des! Btw, how about Body Battery? As you mentioned in the video, HRM via Garmin Connect would sync heart rate data when the watch took off. Curious if Body Battery would also sync between HRM Watch.
yea i have almost 2 years on my HRM-Dual and i just noticed one of the pads is starting coming apart at the "seams". Still works tho, but i'll probably be looking for another one this year.
Very good video! I am mainly a MTB rider, sometimes run or play football, I will check your video one more time, but I believe HRM Dual is all I need. I would like to record HR during a match and then download HR data, but not sure if I wanna pay 2 or 3x the price of Dual vs Pro to have just HR data of my football match via Garmin Connect. My Garmin Venu cannot download it natively...
Hi Great video, can you review the frontier X ? purchased a few months ago for 450 euro, still undecided.. wondering if Garmin would have been a better option
Hey Des, what do you honestly think about advanced running dynamics? Yay or nay? It's kind of cool stuff, but are they worth it? Given that the running power is already there from the wrist. From that pow polar h10 or ever hrm dual much cheaper option to consider.
I think they can definitely be useful if you are looking at improving/correcting certain aspects. Like if you're looking at reducing your vertical oscillation for better efficiency or if you're seeing an imbalance between feet with ground contact time.
Thanks for this! Have you tried connecting a pulse band and a powermeter as well? I saw your video about turning the smartwatch into a bike computer and this helps me a lof figuring out witch one to get!
Not sure if it was mentioned but many heart rate & HRV apps will connect to HRM Pro/etc. I’m currently trying to find a sleep app that will work with the Pro+ as it has an accelerometer.
That blue one died during a trail running session right after it ran out of warranty, then I tore it apart and found corrosion inside. Maybe I'll give HRM-Pro a try this time.
Still have an original HRM run 1st generation module, strap is long since gone. Never understood Garmin's production of straps and modules that can't be separated. Read about loads of people, getting their HRM's replaced after they begin to fail, after a short period of time, particularly after a battery replacement. Bought Polar's H9 strap, when my Garmin module finally started to be unreliable and replaced its strap with a Polar pro strap. I'd probably get a Dual strap if I did return to a Garmin HRM and combine it with a Polar pro strap. I don't really need all the extra analytics of a Pro, as my 255 will give me Power on the wrist.
Two questions: What are the “vents” on the front of the Dual-HRM strap for? Can the Dual-HRM be used for performing Garmin’s lactate threshold test? Thanks.
Des, great content - as usual!! I had HRM Dual and also purchased HRM Pro (paired w/Fenix 7X). With the HRM Dual I can calibrate (e.g. override) the treadmill distance when running indoors on my Fenix 7X. However, with the HRM Pro, it does not allow for "calibration" when running on the treadmill. In your example, the data was pretty close - but that is not always the case. Therefore, I tend to use the Dual on the treadmill, and the Pro outdoors. When traveling - I take both. Crazy, I know. So what do you do? Do you rely on the treadmill data (for distance) or the HRM Pro? Thanks again for being such a great resource! (PS Still loving my Fenix 7X thanks to you!)
Hmm, that's strange that you can't calibrate the distance after a treadmill run with the HRM Pro - I literally did this just last night. Are you scrolling down past the Save option down to Calibrate and Save when you go to complete your run?
Great video thanks, only thing I was wondering is if any of the advanced running data from the pro/pro+ can be accessed from the strap directly via Garmin connect or if you don't have it paired with a premium watch it just won't record that data?
Great infos and I'm learning a lots from your video. But, I have two questions for you. I'm looking for a video on how to read the graphics or data that is download on Garmin connect after training (jogging , walk or cycling) with the HRM Plus. Can you make a video to explain how to read the graphic or data that is add to the Garmin connect after a run or other trainings using the HRM Plus (white)? Also, from what I did understant, if I go for cycling, I must activate my watch (Garmin MK2i) in cycling mode so at the end when I stopped my watch and save the information, it will download all info from my HRM Plus to my watch? For the graphics, I'm not sure what it mean or how to read the info from the graphics. Thanks Alain, Montreal, Canada
A very important thing before buying Hrm dual is that you can't connect it directly to the Garmin connect app. A bit useless if you don't already have a watch
Hey Des, I’ve had my HRM Tri for around 5 years now. 3 days ago I noticed it wasn’t connecting to my Garmin Forerunner 735. This has never happened before and it just says “no devices found” , I’ve changed the battery and still no connection. Would you say that after all this time and use it’s finally died ? I’m clearly looking to buy a new upgrade hence why I’m watching your video 😊
Thanks for the best video I watched so far on the topic. From the video, I understood that if I pair the Venu Sq with the HRM-Pro Plus, it won't collect all the potential data. However, I'm curious if the Venu Sq will still function for other general purposes even with this limitation. I am contemplating upgrading the Venu Sq in the future, but I would like to know if it will remain functional despite this.
Can you please make a short video that helps us to identify them visually & via connected watch/phone. But from online sellers (like ebay) can be risky (different model or a fake with more basic functions).
Great video and a must needed video. As a Zwift user and Garmin Epix (gen 2) owner which would you recommend for Zwift running? The HRM-Pro Plus or going with Stryd?
@@richardt9692 Kind of hard to compare since the Stryd's primary functions are different than the HRM Pro Plus. I'd say that the running distance/pace feature on the HRM Pro Plus is a nice bonus but not a primary reason to get it. The pace/speed/distance accuracy of the Stryd is very good but may be up to you if it's worth the cost, which is not cheap.

Nice about using it for bouldering. Do you use a specific activity profile for that?
Some of watches have specific bouldering or indoor climbing profiles which can automatically detect climbs along with ascent if you wear your watch. Otherwise, you could use the normal cardio profile.
Hey Des, I have a question about HRM-SWIM: I often hear that it's more durable in a pool setting compared to HRM-Pro/Pro+. Is it worth getting HRM-SWIM as a separate strap for pool trainings if I already have HRM-Pro+ (to prolong its life) or am I overthinking it?
Hi, I have the HRM Swim for the pool, it’s just waaaay better in terms of staying in place and also the chemicals will destroy the other straps. Then I have the HRM Pro for all running, cycling.
Thanks for the video! I was actually wondering recently on whether these straps were a good investment as my HRM-RUN seemed to die after about 2 years... I replaced it with the HRM-Dual due to the replaceable strap... 2 years is the general standard life for these? Thanks again!
I've heard anything from 18 months to multiple years so I think it varies. Although I have friends who have straps that are 3+ years old and are still good to go!
Can you use any of these HRM without a garmin watch? I wanted one to connect with my Garmin Edge GPS for biking, but can I the use it with the phone to record lets say, running?
You could use the HRM Dual, HRM Pro, or HRM Pro Plus with the Strava app to record running. Fun hack, you could actually use your Edge to record your run and then just change the activity type after you’re done in both Garmin Connect as well as Strava.
Thanks for the informative video! I just got a Forerunner 265 which is able to get the advanced running metrics but the HR monitoring is quite inaccurate when I'm doing anything anaerobic or moving my wrist. Is there any reason to get the Pro Plus HR monitor to perhaps improve the accuracy of the running metrics or should I just get a cheaper HR monitor that only improves the HR accuracy? Thank you!
With the Garmin HRM pro plus and Apple Watch ultra combo - can you start a workout on your watch, take off your watch (for sports) while still wearing the HRM pro plus and then later stop the workout and get the data synced ? You mentioned this worked for certain garmins but not if it works for Apple Watches
I've found them to be nearly similar and use both on a consistent basis as reference units, but I've also seen occasional blips here and there with both. Very rare though. I certainly recognize that the H10 is used quite a bit in research settings which says a lot for accuracy.
@@DesFit thanks! I am beginning to use the HRM Pro Plus in research settings, especially regarding HRV. Very accurate so far. It may be the gold standard in the near future.
I have an HRM-Tri and found the comparison with other units very informative - thanks. I was considering an HRM Pro Plus to give me BT for connection to a laptop. I didn't know that the HRM Tri can stop HR data for use separated from a watch, but having tried this a couple of times, I can't get it to work (Epix Gen 2). Anyone have success with this?
Excuse me, but I have a question. I have a Forerunner 265. If I pair a HRM-Pro Plus, do you have to manually turn off your wrist heart rate or is it automatic? I'm sure it would save some battery life on the watch.
Hi i wanna ask question, does the HRM Dual able to perform lactacte threshold test if i pair it with Garmin Instinct 2X solar? the watch ask me to use garmin HRM to perform the test, thanks in advance.
Thank you for the video. If you don't mind I have one question: My FR 255 gives me vertical oscillation, ground contact time and cadence. Are these accurate data from the watch or is a chest strap more accurate? Thanks.
Indeed top performance coupled with the absolute lowest crappy quality. Don't expect a Garmin HRM band to last 2 years without eating batteries like a Tesla (average use: 1 hr/day) and falling apart despite maniacal care: thoroughfully wash, rinse, dry naturally and never bend after EACH use. And don't tell me it probably was a defective item, because I'm on the fourth one in few years. I know "fool me twice, shame on me", anyway I'm still reluctant to switch to more reliable ones, such as Polar (golden standard), because I'm deeply stuck in a Garmin environment. That's my 2c ...
Hi, I just wondering which HRM chest strap is best? I understand from Des, it would be HRM Dual that would best alternative since Pro and Pro+ do not sync other data to AWatch. How about Polar H10 or Wahoo? Thank you.
One of the biggest flaws with the Garmin HRM pro is that after you unscrew the device to change the battery, it is never water-tight again. And it will slowly corrode the inside electrics. Many people have broken their HRM pro because of this
Sad that the straps are so poor quality. I have had my HRM-tri replaced on warranty twice, latest with an upgrade to HRM-pro, because the strap separetes from the sensor. It seems that some of the joinings are only glued, where they should have been sewn.
I do a lot of boxing training and struggle with wearing my garmin under the gloves (I record the activity as HIIT)...if I get a monitor how would I start/record my activity? Is there anyway to see the data real time if I have my phone with me?
Hi, thanks for the video, i am wondering, is it possible to pair Garmin watch with armband heart rate (seems like it's the case when you were running on the treadmill in the video ? otherwise, i am looking for a comfy heart rate chese, the ones you shared gets stuck on my chest since i have some "fat" there...
Looking at the hem pro plus. Does that download the swim data like the swim and does it do it as part of the multi sport mode Quite often I just have to forget the hrm data for the swim when I used to have a polar watch/strap combo it would work I want to be able to do a triathlon with a very basic set and forget approach as on paper I should be able to do all these things with a single watch/strap now
How about 2 users in the same house. Can you swap the strap user to user? (Significant other, our primary use while be weekly lactate threshold testing)
A feature I find really useful of pairing a chest strap (non-Garmin apparently work as well) is to record breathing rates while exercising. Some Garmin watches will use that to automatically detect your lactate threshold and update whenever you do a workout that changes it. Very useful to find your zone 2 and keep it constantly updated.
could u elaborate more? i never heard of it

As usual very helpfull 👍
Glad to help!
The Venu SQ will connect to any of these straps via BT or ANT+ to provide HR but as you mentioned it won't collect the additional running dynamics.
Can you please make a short video that helps us to identify them visually & via connected watch/phone. But from online sellers (like ebay) can be risky (different model or a fake with more basic functions).
Great video! Would have saved me a bunch of time when I was shopping for one, haha.
Glad to help!
I was looking for something to use while doing bjj rolling and training and surfing... so soft and small is a must.. any suggestion ?
Thanks for the video!! If polar h10 and hrm pro plus the same price which should I get? using apple watch ultra
The Apple Watch Ultra won't be able to take advantage of the additional features on the HRM Pro Plus so I'd go with the H10. Thanks!
@@DesFit thanks ❤️
Great video and a must needed video. As a Zwift user and Garmin Epix (gen 2) owner which would you recommend for Zwift running? The HRM-Pro Plus or going with Stryd?
The HRM Pro Plus is not a bad option but the Stryd will provide better data for Zwift running. Thanks!
@@DesFit Thanks for the quick response. Is Stryd worth the extra cost vs the HRM Pro Plus?
Very useful, many thanks!
What would you recommend to pair with for the coros pace 2 Des?! I’m running and biking and not really swimming! Thank you
Hi, thanks for the review. I am a cycling beginner and I wonder if the HRM dual is ok for me or would your recommend another one?
The HRM dual would work great
@@DesFitthank you!
Hello, thank for review, is HRM PRO PLUS compatible with new Garmin forerunner 965?
Yup, definitely
Hey Des, I have a question about HRM-SWIM: I often hear that it's more durable in a pool setting compared to HRM-Pro/Pro+. Is it worth getting HRM-SWIM as a separate strap for pool trainings if I already have HRM-Pro+ (to prolong its life) or am I overthinking it?
Not overthinking it at all...that would definitely prolong the life of your HRM-Pro/Pro Plus! 👍
If I only want it for runs and don’t have a watch which one is best?
Thanks for the informative video! I just got a Forerunner 265 which is able to get the advanced running metrics but the HR monitoring is quite inaccurate when I'm doing anything anaerobic or moving my wrist. Is there any reason to get the Pro Plus HR monitor to perhaps improve the accuracy of the running metrics or should I just get a cheaper HR monitor that only improves the HR accuracy? Thank you!
Is there any device that would give you audible feedback regarding which HR zone you are at, so you wouldn't need to watch a screen? Thanks
I am wondering the same thing
If you have one of the older garmin watches, cant you download load the running power app to collect your data from hrm
What is the watch you’re Wearing when you are on the treadmill with the green button?
With the Garmin HRM pro plus and Apple Watch ultra combo - can you start a workout on your watch, take off your watch (for sports) while still wearing the HRM pro plus and then later stop the workout and get the data synced ? You mentioned this worked for certain garmins but not if it works for Apple Watches
That functionality only works with certain Garmin watches
Great video. In your experience, do you think the HRM Pro Plus has the same accuracy as the Polar H10? The latter one is used in research settings.
Hello. Can we wear this Garmin HRM PRO PLUS, continue 24/7 for 15 days. Does it comfortably? Thank you
I have an HRM-Tri and found the comparison with other units very informative - thanks.
Has anyone had issues with most HR straps not being long/too short to make it all the way around your torso?
Garmin provides a size range on their website so you can make sure before ordering 👍
@@DesFit nice! I appreciate the response back. You just gained a subscriber!
Actually, looks like most manufacturers list a size range 👍 Thanks!
How about the Garmin Edge 530 or the other Edge models. Does the HRM pro provide any additional data points?
It doesn’t, it just acts as a heart rate monitor
Hi i wanna ask question, does the HRM Dual able to perform lactacte threshold test if i pair it with Garmin Instinct 2X solar? the watch ask me to use garmin HRM to perform the test, thanks in advance.
I use the HRM-Pro for pool swimming around 3hours per week, should i get the HRM-swim so I don't break my Pro one?
I have a vivoactive 3 watch , will the pro ,pro plus or the tri be compatible with it? for the advanced running dynamics
Amazing, thank's!
👍
Thank you for the video. If you don't mind I have one question:
My FR 255 gives me vertical oscillation, ground contact time and cadence. Are these accurate data from the watch or is a chest strap more accurate? Thanks.
The results are very similar, it's just that the HRM Pro would also provide left/right balance.
@@DesFit Thank you for the reply.
Do you need this and a watch? Is the watch not as accurate for heart rate measurements?
Hi, I just wondering which HRM chest strap is best? I understand from Des, it would be HRM Dual that would best alternative since Pro and Pro+ do not sync other data to AWatch. How about Polar H10 or Wahoo? Thank you.
I'd go for the HRM-Dual or Polar H10. H10 is a gold standard but that's not to say the HRM Dual is inaccurate. Both are reliable.
@@DesFit Thank you ^^b
HRM Swim does not list the new forerunner watches like forerunner 255 under compatible watches. Is this true?
One of the biggest flaws with the Garmin HRM pro is that after you unscrew the device to change the battery, it is never water-tight again. And it will slowly corrode the inside electrics. Many people have broken their HRM pro because of this
What if i dont have a garmin watch? Would the features of HRM pro be still viable?
They can pair with nearly any bluetooth or ANT+ HR monitor, chest, arm, or otherwise 👍
@DesFit great ! Thanks for your quick feedback !
Looking at the hem pro plus. Does that download the swim data like the swim and does it do it as part of the multi sport mode
Quite often I just have to forget the hrm data for the swim when I used to have a polar watch/strap combo it would work
I want to be able to do a triathlon with a very basic set and forget approach as on paper I should be able to do all these things with a single watch/strap now
The HRM Pro and HRM Pro Plus have the same heart rate storage capability as the HRM Swim (none of them store any actual swim-related metrics though).
@@DesFit yes bu the watch stores that so should be good to go!!
Correct 👍
How about 2 users in the same house. Can you swap the strap user to user? (Significant other, our primary use while be weekly lactate threshold testing)
Yup, there are no limitations when it comes to switching from one person to another.
Question: For the Running Dynamics, will that data sync with the Garmin App or only a compatible watch?
The running dynamics can only be collected by a compatible Garmin watch
Am I able to set heart rate zone with HRM-dual on Venu 2?
