Like when pro athletes have a streetball background and are able to bully opponents of higher clinical skill level by styling on them.

Island maps, I remember making custom Island maps with a single pathway between them to access via ground to play against AI back in the day (like, 2000 kinda back in the day) on Starcraft so I could cannon myself off and just build carriers for the lulz :-D They really should do both to be honest, put the players in sound proof booths and do the white noise headsets, but not as loud since it wouldn't be necessary to have it so loud, so it's easier to hear comms & in game sounds. I've heard a lot of people say that when you're at a loud live event, the volume of the white noise is so bad that it's hard to hear the game sometimes. That has to be frustrating, especially in games like Starcraft 2, CS etc where sound is important (in SC you can hear the attack of a DT etc before you see it sometimes, stuff like that matters).
I think Koreans have a long history of watching "Go" the ancient board game with black and white stones on TV already. So it was a natural transition when PC games like Starcraft became popular. Like imagine if Americans grew up having a channel devoted to just chess games.

Mineral patches have usually been 1500 and geysers 5000 since the very beginning (it's the default in the map editor and what's used in the vast majority of Blizzard maps). Nine patches in the main and seven in the natural wasn't standard though, and there is a lot of variation there both in Blizzard and early KeSPA maps. (And of course, not every map even had a natural, or had gas at the natural.)
I lost a game where I had a lot of carriers once. Turns out if you only have 2 obs with them, a group of wraiths can pop those… almost instantly…. Lol. That was on Dire Straights too. GG Tasteless. At least we got some McDonalds afterwards.
The absolute god and innovator of MACRO was the player "NTT". NTT was a magician! Then there was another player called DSDS who opened my eyes to making the entire map my base. Check out NTT though. I am sure there should be some replays left of him. Remember, he was literally the very first dude to ALWAYS macro and to ALWAYS win with it. :D
Although a slow pace that makes me feel like I could have been a pro for the first several years lol that was an awesome game and awesome moment in history
Yeah that era has no sound proof. All matches have been held with soundproof booths and white noise headset since around the summer of 2006, after someone claimed to iloveoov got benefits by the roar of his fans in the round of 16.
I think one thing that made old BW scenes exciting was lack of information for spectators. RTS games (and video games in general) nowadays give you almost everything you want to know, which is not a bad thing, but... it's something.
Back in the early 2000s, most korean sc spectators wouldnt even know what those Informations mean. Over half of the viewers didnt even play starcraft. It was that popular.

I'd bet the opposite to be true, and that the ratio has only increased since then.

Joyo used to be a race picker, right? He usually played terran but he admits that he didn't want to play TvT versus Boxer. I used to do the "joyo rush" in TvP against top players in my region and it was unstoppable lol, good times.
Why didn't Joya shuttle his remaining troops over to the terran bases and take out those buildings? Also - the game is not over unless all buildings are destroyed. Boxer cannot take out all those cannons...

This was literally the game that got me into pro starcraft. This blew my mind at the time. I could not believe it.
