Plastikman, aka Richie Hawtin, recorded EX at the Guggenheim, New York's iconic art museum. This very special performance was at the invitation of influential Belgium fashion designer and artistic director at Dior, Raf Simons, for the Guggenheim's annual fundraiser, performed around a specially constructed LED obelisk.
Richie Hawtin explains, "I knew that Raf was a long time Plastikman fan so by accepting his offer to perform at the Dior event at the Guggenheim I knew I'd set myself up to a huge challenge. Although Raf was happy to have the already complete Plastikman Live 1.5 show, I locked myself away in a series of intense studio sessions and quickly recorded enough new material for the performance and realized I might also have enough for a complete new album. The music came out of me effortlessly as I was very inspired by the opportunity to play in this beautiful architectural space renowned more for art than music. The location also allowed me to step far away from the dancefloor, giving me a huge amount of freedom to EXplore any sonic ideas that I had. Art, music, architecture, painting, sculpture -- these mediums are supposed to live together."

This man single-handedly inspired me and my close group of friends to quit our career (IT/Telecom at the time) and spend the next few years learning to DJ. Been doing it strong since 2000. I've never been happier, more successful, or more grateful. He's an absolute legend and icon for me.
You've never been more successfull? Can you show some of your works/performances?
@@nutelhere Bro, he is probably too successful for you
Bless
@@nutelhere I don't understand why you measure success in terms of money and fame and not in terms of happiness and self realisation
@@danielribes423 I didn't define success in these terms. In fact I didn't define it at all. But if you asked me what success means I'd tell you that it's being good at something. I was just curious what he meant by "being successful", so I asked him to showcase his skills. I can imagine that you could be successful dj without being popular (but you are good at DJing).
This is what happens when after 40 years of the instrument in production you master it fully. It's like the ultimate guitar player or pianist. Hawtin from Banbury to Detroit. We salute you.
Fucking 40 years
Fuck me.
1994 plastic Cd
For me.
He’s actually from Windsor, Ontario but we Detroiters consider him ours❤️

Ah yes, good old Plastikman. The true definition of "minimal-acid". Glad to see he is still putting music together.
I'm 42 now. My first rave party was in 1988. Than I discovered Richie and John in the very early 90's. "Two Guys In The Basement" and "Circuit Breaker". From than on I bought every Plastikman album. It saved me from loving cheap crap dance musik!!! This EX album takes me right back to the essence of Plastikman.... Thank you Richie !!!
john acquaviva?
Stoney Bailey Yep
54 and still going.
Same age bracket but went 'In a Silent Way' instead. This has the potential to bring me back :-)
I'm 53 this year remember some of it well enough! :) Blame the mandies! lol
Had someone over while this was on. She never had heard any techno and has no particular interest in music but instantly said "woah, this is good, what is that?"
I told her.
Congrats Richie!
did you have her over like a jacket?
@@Cmpunmu3 Eat Static were a big fan. That was enough of an endorsement for me.
Luv and Peace.
You're a true gentleman for publishing this here, Mr. Hawtin. Respect.
ill never forget a 10-12 hour drive in 2004
from detroit to montreal to see richie perform as plastikman for his first time in ten years. it was absolutely epic and one of the best weekends of my life. 20 years after THAT performance, still innovative.
This is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. I listen to it a few times a year and it always stirs something deep within me. The final few minutes are like coming home. I have cried listening to this, and I'm sure I will again.
This is truly a masterpiece of electronic music
This album is Plastikman's greatest masterpiece! I love it. I never get tired of listening to it again. Thanks a lot for this upload!
41 minute Yes You Can Richie. Please keep going with PLASTIKMAN
One does not simply dislikes Richie Hawtin.
This is one of the best electronic albums that I've heard in my life.... simply awesome.
Stuck in the past? ... let's just say he's showing the new generation how it's done. Richie Hawtin was and still is the king of minimalist techno. It is about sound and technology meeting the human soul: Robotic and human at the same time... it is the definition of techno music for me.
@@carnmarth334 fair points :) ... my comment was a bit excessive. But I miss people who were do "research" with sounds and synths. Emulation and VSTs are great and now we have more tools and possibilities than ever ... More experiments and less default presets would be good :) ... as for the new generation listening to what was done before, I hope they do; the past is rich
Could not agree more!
I don't understand. Can you please speak in 303 please. ^^
@@carnmarth334 +1
It’s to hard, been to one of his nights, don’t matter what drug you take how can you dance to that
I can not even begin to explain how happy I am that this upload doesn't have any ads. Ads (especially in between every song) can completely ruin the flow of a great Electronic album.
When it's 1am and bass is pumpin' ; it's Richie time!
He is back, and he is doing it right, again!
es la primera vez que escucho este álbum,
un viaje de ida, totalmente, no se como se vuelve de esto.
alucinante
For all the haters, gotta keep in mind he made these tracks to play at a museum.
Perfect -- fit for the occasion.
Im 43yo, went to alot of your shows, having my guys land while i danced on E when it was that good. I hear your music now and feel the flash backs of greatness.
I think this is the most "musical" LP Plastikman has ever done. It's more complex and the ideas develop a lot faster than in previous recordings. At 24:09 it really takes off.
Either you "get" the gradualism and minimalism of Plastikman -- or you don't. Some find it boring. I find it relaxing. It forces you to kind of slow down and notice the little segues and progressions. Some find it annoying, too repetitious, too slow at getting to its destination, but I mostly enjoy it now and then. I own quite a few Plastikman and Richie Hawtin CDs.
Pioneer techno minimalism artist Plastikman (Richie Hawtin) releases new album "EX". This is slow-building techno that people either love passionately or find to be boring. I learn from it the value of simplicity and gradualism.

You get it, but from watching the actual performance at the Guggenheim, it's clear that the audience didn't. Pearls before swine at that venue. Thankfully there have been actual shows afterwards that looked mind blowing with huge crowds that appreciated what they were hearing and seeing.
Steven Streight It's more complex than Musik or Artifakts? Not quite... It's good, and definitely Plastikman, but Artifakts and Musik are his most complex works, at least in my opinion.
previous? ie sheet one, musik, artifacts ,far more complex.
It's great to revisit Plastikman and know he's not changed and still recognisable.
A blast from the past.
I've been following Richie's work since late 93. Every album is a completely new experience. Hes always way ahead of the curve and always has a totally unique style. You know without a doubt that what your hearing is Richie Hawtin. I would have loved to see this set go off live. Especially being that it was a PLASTIKMAN set. Total magic. I Absolutely love it.
No debate. awesome just awesome! Not heard techno this good for a long time.
Press play, immerse and enjoy
Amazing piece of art! I agree with some of the other comments. I was there too in the early 90s. Always respect the past, know the people that made the sacrifices and remember always. ❤️❤️❤️. Thank you Richie!
Thanks richie, you give me a great lsd night with this album ...
This is Plastikman sound but still different as album. I love more this acid melodic ambient Plastikman than dark sound he developed with last two albums. This is the essence of electronic music here. Some people expect to go to rave and listen Plastikman but this is best consumed at home in my opinion. Richie is a great artist
Agreed. Too many people in this comment section are looking for club music. I even read someone call Richie a "dance music producer". EX is for the soul.
Georgi Terziev its not about clubmusic. its about a halfheartet attempt to revive plastikman.. the things that made the old plastikman stuff interesting is gone with bad sounding softsynths and boredom.. plastikman should just have stayed in his moms old basement
Hawtin is no new to non club electronic music, for example his collaboration with Pete Namlook or the track FUSE-Nitedrive
I have always used so-called "club music" medicinally outside these venues. Although nothing can beat the vibe of a great live-show; I don't know what I would do without the therapeutic benefits of this stuff in my day-to-day. This artist's work is really expressive. Takes me there.
excellent comment. home alone...luv this
I just LOVE IT!!!
as the album begins and progresses, you can hear the roots, and the progression is like the entity called PLASTIKMAN is slowly re-emerging from an unconscious void after years of non existence.
Amazing and I love IT. thank you Plastikman and Richie

The second part of the album is amazing!
Headphones on,sounds amazing. It's what we've been waiting for.
This make me move on a vibrational level, try hearing this instead of debating whether this sounds like 1993, 2010 etc.
I discovered this guy when I got to VJ at Detroit Electronic Music Festival. I can't stand this music but this guy is freaking amazing and makes a natural ecstasy produce through my body!
+BuDoPeY Otoko Richie is GOD! and he is "One And Only" :)))))
One of those albums that makes you forget about time.
& space 😉
EX cellent album! 🤖 Ain’t nobody got time for debate. Richie is not human at all.
EXcellent
As an avid music collector who still buys physical media, props to Richie Hawtin for posting his own stuff online for free to check out.
that last track EXhale is out of this world. dark, atmospheric, mesmerizing sounds :3
I love this album - it is very well " not produced " but improvisated ....great work from Richie. I found what I was looking for.
The album has patches of his prior work while implementing new sounds and lush landscapes. Perfect for home or any museum. Or a ambient room. When this album dropped and I scoffed at the price of admission at the Guggenheim.
I was a 500 pressings or less techno/house/abstract snob when he had the show. 5 years later. I get it.
I used to suffer from the techno snobbery also. I've got loads of pounding grooves, cluster , stay up for ever, routemaster , havoc.. etc etc. I never sit and listen to them as music, I just mix with them. But my plasticman spastik was my second record and i still listen to it often to chill to. 🤞
I'm 15 minutes into the album & I'm enjoying it so far for what it is, some cool, mellow, laid back, trippy listening music while I enjoy my vodka, cranberry juice & orange juice drink! :)
I will check it out again next time I''m high off the herb!
I think all the people whining & complaining don't understand this isn't a dance album, it sounds more like a cool movie sound track!!!
This is the future. So fantastic in so many ways. Expire has to be the most epic sounding song ever
Impressive!! One of the best pieces of music I have ever heard in my life! Thank you Richie!!!
The moment i was waiting , thank you RICHIEEE!!!!
I can't believe I just discovered this. Oh well, it appears this discovery will not be worthless as it will contribute to an expanding music collection!
You understand it😉
J'attendai ca !!!! et quel pied !! Thanks so much Richie :D
Richie Hawtin is the MASTER !!!!
Thanks for sharing Richie. The closing track is absolutely blinding
Love it. It's 1 hour of getting back to that time. It's warm, nice sounding on my headphones. If it's done, I'll be back in the present and continue listening to Richie Hawtin ;)
I'm loving this. Classic Plastikman sounds with upgraded production. Such good work here. Not sure what all the shit is about in the comments. No, you're not going to dance to this -- you're not supposed to. Unfortunately, I think society in general is to dumb'd down & full of instant gratification to still appreciate the subtleties of Plastikman. If you want to dance, go listen to Richie Hawtin. O.o
oh yes, i can swing my bum to this allright
There is a four to the floor that’s all one needs to dance. The substances help lol
haha, you should see me dance on this, and the people I bring along
this is literally dancing music bro
Love that ending, great mix of classic/contemporary.
So much love for @Richie Hawtin
Jedno z najlepszych arcydzieł Plastikmana :) słucham chyba ze 3 raz i cały czas mam ciarki :)
Jest moc👍💪
Thank you yet again Richie for this masterpiece. Absolutely tripped harder than I ever had from 4 tabs of LSD and some fat bumps of ket leading me into an insane k hole while this was pulsating in my ears. Fucking incredible experience, might be even better than listening to this while rolling.
Thank you so much for this richie..another level!!
Awesome ... good job again Richie, loving it!
Thx a lot 4 sharing this masterpiece!!
This is the first album, and youtube offering at that, which I've started to listen to and had to hear the whole way through for years - actual years. It's just finished. Breathtaking. Richie Hawtin, I've spent most of the day trying to get a Bach prelude together on piano and how you can create something so soulful, so different, yet so similarly touching is still beyond me after all these years. I shall go and buy this. Thank you! :)
+D r Jezz music of Bach, Beethoven, Handle wrote music for God, and it was played in the congregation...it was a bigger picture view of the world. Music like Richie Hawtin, which has more emphasis on the beat and groove, is more about the visceral, tangible, human experience. It's not about the Higher Power, but getting in tune with our bodies, our groove, and our basic instinct...the pulsing of our heart, blood, and breath...very different experience, but equally as incredible and moving...
For sure :)
They're the same thing. One's about getting into your body in order to get out of it. The other's about getting out of your body in order to get into it.
I cant stop listening to this tuff... seems i have discovered Plastikman for myself... oh my god - what have i done???
ouip
Welcome to the dark side.
You did the best 😁
Sheet one is better
Plastikman was my 1st Introduction into techno. In back of an suv high on LSD for 3rd time & driver puts on Musik. That's was in 1994. Still a favorite 20+ years later
I've probably listened to this 333 times by now. 🤔
it was amazing. Thank you Richie
Beautiful! Thank you Richie that was thoroughly enjoyable in my headphones.
Elliot McDonell I would say this (EX) ranks up there with Consumed for head phone listening, (smiling as I'm listening to the 303 bass lines :) )
Aaron Dunlap
but these are no 303....can read it here. lifeandtimes.com/the-man-behind-plastikman
Marko B Thank you for the heads up on that, My bad
Jea,my grado sr60 loves it
The essence of Plastikman . For me personally much better than any DJ Richie Hawtin set i have heard .
The soundscape is astounding.
Really love it! Amazing work Richie! The future!
this sound made me more confident about trying to release at Minus/Plus 8. Thanx Plastikman! : )
I think this is my second favorite installment of Plastikman after Consumed! I think it was said below perfectly, that this is a counterpoint to Consumed. Consumed was muddled, airy, noisy, and wavering but over all "Consuming". All you who are complaining are coming to listen to "RIchie" not Plastikman. Plastikman in NOT intended as "Club". It's Ambient, not EDM. The reason there is no direction or "lead" is because as Brian Eno put it, "You become the figure in the landscape."
Sean Richards wthech. Hawtin was never edm. Do your homework
@@auggysimcity we don't have to be dicks about it.
Beautiful work Mr Hawtin. Just perfect right now
this one is so badass
Have this album on vinyl love it, real minimal, too many people don`t have a clue what minimal is these days
+basicreplay idiot
+basicreplay listen his early albums. it's minimal. not classical music, not jazz, not rock. it was minimal techno. Great it was. And now it's masterpiece of minimal. It's poiunt of view.
+basicreplay +Hugo Lioret This new album sounds better than olds, it's great deep work. Commercial music helps musician earn money and do this nice art of techno music. Don't you see it? I see..
+basicreplay About transforming styles of electronic music - it's true. One dies, another lives. Transformings - is reason why i love electronic music more than rock. Tech-house could be interesting too. Now Plastikman is back with new work with original concept of sound.
i know minimal
Plastikman, no habrá otro igual, fin del comunicado.
Otherwordly. Listened to this so many times over the years. Brings back so many memories... you rock Richie
AMAZING!!!! LOVED IT SOOOO MUCH!!! THANK YOU RICHIE!!!
man this is art !
EX, transport my state of mind to another level!
Listened to the album like 4 times. So good, I went out and bought it today. What a journey it takes you on!

One of my all time favorites!
AMAZING! Plastikman is back better than ever!
the past and future are HERE.
Would LOVE to hear a set of the style you used to spin at your own parties in Detroit. Hardest, Heaven and Hell, etc.". Blacked out record labels, you know. Awesome.
Thx MASTER, big album!
A world without Richie Hawtin would not be a real world, but a world with Richie Hawtin is not a real world too, in different meaning...
This, in my opinion, is not just music, this is cosmic art!
23:56 TOP
amazing as ever...
Remains an important record all these years later!
Back to the future
A contender for being the most futuristic musician on Earth at the moment. Filtered Acid sounds suits avantgarde well.
I think Autechre do too.
sublimit777 true. Autechre can be too abstract in my opinion, too far from tonality and rhythm. I suppose you have to if you want to be the most avant-garde.
is this sarcasm?
+Intandem DJ I hope so. This music sounds like it could have been made before Sheet One. Is there really anything in it that sounds like 2020 rather than 1990?
Bodzin
Simply amazing, I dont have any other words to describe it.
Amazing timeless piece off music!
turn on - tune in - drop out
I'm sure Timothy Leary would approve ;)

Turn off. Tune out. Drop in.
