Thank you so much for the tip about the switch fix! Got a used ms250 and a day after I watched your video that switch issue happened due to my rough/uneducated removal of the shroud. Luckily I had watched your video and I was back in action. Thanks!

Great review. I like Stihl, so this sealed the deal to buy an MS250. Especially learned from your starting the saw. That is the real world. Thank you Mrs. Brian for your comments. Definitely adds to the learning.
Good choice! Glad we could help you out! This saw has probably been our most used tool since we bought this land. I can't believe how much I've used it...maybe 100+ fills of fuel to date??? We love having this land, but it is a load more work than most realize to keep it looking nice...good problem to have ;)

Just bought mine today. This is about my 10th saw in past 40 yrs. Ive had husky,poulan, dewalt, and 70s stihl and this 250 is abeast for its size. My first tree today was 21inches in diameter. It ate right through it❤

We LOVE IT. I just used it today (about 5-6 tanks of gas had to swap out the chain!!!) We had a HUGE dead tree in one of our ditches that needed to go... and it had fallen onto a barb wire fence, UNDER THE WATER!!!...so it was a JOY to remove ;) This saw has been excellent. I was literally just telling my wife, I was so glad we bought a quality saw today...
Not to be nit-picking, but the sequence of the control lever is the following: 1 - Off, 2 - Run, 3 - High Idle, 4 - Choke. Go to choke and pull until it pops. Flick the lever to High Idle, pull until saw starts and chain spins. Blip the throttle trigger to set the lever to Run and the saw idles.
I'd suggest to get an Oregon chain grinder, usually can be found at local Stihl dealers or online on Amazon.
Also, pin that throttle in the wood, don't push hard, let the saw do all the work. I own 2 MS 250's, rebuilt one of them.
Yeah. The chain grinder would be nice. Worth it too, with something like 10 chains sitting waiting for a rainy day ;)

Glad it was helpful! This saw caught me with my shorts down because of the integral primer....but once I figured that out (the hard way - flooded it badly) it's be AWESOME ever since. I've been thought gallons and gallons of fuel and 13-15 chains. I use the heck out of this saw, and it was the FIRST tool we bought for our acreage.

Good video. I take extra chains so swap easy and then sharpen after dark.. Also take a wedges or 2 to avoid pinching bar.

With respect, there's quite a lot of bad/missing information here. Filing chains (it's not a blade), especially very small chains like yours, only takes about 5 minutes once you get proficient which doesn't take too long with a few practice sessions. This saves you a lot of money. Reference Stihl's recomendation on starting. Pull until it burps, then move to high idle (middle setting) until it starts. Blip the throttle to return to idle. You spoke of checking the sprocket on the bar but that's the least important. The bar rails should be de-burred, the oil holes and rails should be cleaned and you should flip the bar every time you have it off or in increments. Don't dig holes with your saw. lol
Look man, not trying to be a narc like a lot of other comments. This was a really good video and full of info, but some of these comments are speaking the truth. we don’t decide how you live obviously but nobody wants a chainsaw injury/ wants to see somebody get one. just always be safe!
I agree. Chainsaws are like other saws. They will cut you if you're not careful.
Yoyo start can be very dangerous. Hard on the pull cord too. You could brace the handle of the saw between your legs and start from that position. Always wear chaps or cutting pants even for demos. I use cutting pants. Keep a short wrench in the pocket.
Another thing about these saws is with regard to the caps. If you fill the oil reservoir right up to the top the caps will not want to lock on. It may look right, but when you pick up the saw, the cap pops off.
Good video dude and very nice practical and powerful saw. Everyone's an experienced expert right?! Some good safety comments though as chainsaws are very dangerous when not operated properly. Stihl MS291 Owner.

I've got 3 saws currently, the smallest of which is an 028 av wood boss. I need to do a bit of a tune up on the carb and get a screw for the muffler. Then there's the 391, which I'm probably selling next year, and the 661.
I love this chainsaw, and only wish I would have gotten a slightly more powerful one. A more powerful chainsaw will make for a safer experience.
@@BrianPhillipsRC if you want one that's more powerful, I'd suggest the 271, 291, or 261. I bought the 391 and the 661, both of which are good saws, but they're not for everyone, especially if weight is a concern. I bought the 271 for my dad, and he seems to like it for cutting firewood.
You are putting a TON of trust in your pull cord and recoil starter assembly throw starting a saw like that. If you're lucky the cord snaps and you are able to keep control of the saw. If you're not the whole assembly
Strips and dislodges the recoil spring. Then there's the chance all this happens on the firing stroke and the saw heads into your leg with the chain spinning. Drop start if you want but let the weight of the saw pull the cord. You don't nerd to throw it.

Np. Im not trying to nit pick at you but I do small engine repair and see a lot of pull cord issues on 2 cycle machines. Stihl pull cords are easy to get to. There are echo and mtd stuff that requires pulling the engine to get to the starter assembly.
Good video. Everyone has different technique. When we cut trees out of a creek like that.... we cut the tree down, grab it with a big grapple and drag out of there with tractor. Then strip it and cut it up. Enjoyed your video much!
Sure, we try that with whole trees, but in our situation, they seem to almost always be out of reach ;)
G'day mate, just saying when you start your saw, have it on full choke till it kicks and wants to run then, go to your run position and pull, make sure it kicks because you can flood them easialy. I am personally a husky person I use the husky 365 for bigger stuff, but got a sthil ms 180 mini boss for smaller stuff I love it. Might look into the ms 250 in the future. (Dont put to much presure on the saw when in a log, dont let the rpms to drop)
I agree - The MS250 might be needed in my situation...we use the heck out of it!!!
Even if it doesn't kick, no more than 4 pulls on full choke.

These saws come alive with a 3/8 picco chain and 16" bar.
I think you have different exhausts over there but on my UK one opening it up and drilling a few extra holes in the baffle let me run a bit more fuel.
Then you can look at different carbs and a bit more ignition advance and and..
By the way, you mentioned getting spare bar nuts. Well I've got a 2004 and a 2008 250 and they have different thread pitches. Madness eh?
Awesome! I'd love 10-15% more power. Honestly, I'm just glad she starts no matter how mean I am to her. This saw has been beat to death, and she starts in 4-5 pulls (including primer pulls) and runs until she's out of fuel. I'd buy another one, or the size up again in a heartbeat!

Sorry to scare you. Everyone lived. Chainsaw works great. Have used hundreds of fills of fuel through it, and cleared acres of land with it, so despite what you may think, all is well.
Oh you don’t use your chain break. Secondly I don’t know how the hell you run around using a chainsaw with your Robe or whatever that is hanging in the breeze Your speed that you’re running kind of tells me that you have no clue what the hell you’re doing. City boy that’s what I’m saying.
If you do not sharpen your chains yourself, you do not love your chainsaw enough.
LOL - I guess I don't - LOL... Actually, I'm just too busy to deal with it. I will get a bench mounted setup and do like 20 at a time at some point, but just too much on my plate at the moment.

I've very recently learned that you CAN wear out the SPUR DRIVE GEAR - I had no idea, and it's embarrassing, but I DID get it swapped out for super cheap, and basically made this chainsaw AMAZING AGAIN!!!

Dude.... That's a two stroke, let those rpms fly! You're running it like a 4 stroke and not using your rpm range. You need to scream a two stroke. Thanks for the video though, this will be my new firewood saw.

Ever consider switching to a pole saw?
I want one, but they're kinda crazy expensive....if you're talking about a gas operated one. I think they wanted something like $750 for the Stihl variety I was checking out. I about bought it, but decided against it for the time being...
We have an electric one coming to review pretty quick.
P.S. I absolutely LOVE this chainsaw, if it weren't clear. I cut and cleared thousands of trees and literally tons and tons of dead fall, and tree pruning.
That saw would start in less than 5 pulls if you followed the starting procedure😂. And use your rpm range it will help when cutting it’s a 2 stroke you need to use the top end of your range

Stihl makes a nifty sharpening jig that works like a hot damn.
I have a few different sharpeners, and they're all a pain. I have so many chains sitting around that I should get a bench grinder rig, so I can do it fast.
@@BrianPhillipsRC The Stihl 2 in 1 sharpener works like a hot damn. I am a newbie and can get a scary sharp blade in minutes. And its relatively inexpensive, fits in a pocket or toolbox and the files can be rotated or replaced when dull. Killer rig. I have a 16in bar which my MS250 came with but I have an 18in bar and ripping chain for some lumber I want to slab. Love my saw.
Paul Boegel good advice. Pferd makes the sharpener for stihl. He could watch a 5 minute video and be able to sharpen his chain in 5 minutes with the sharpener you suggested

100% Although Megan and I both got hit hard with poison everything...and haven't been cutting for a while. We need to do this, but it's easier when it's more out of season.

I agree that they can be dangerous, and accidents happen and people do get hurt. Not really any argument from me here.
I've used a saw since I was a teenager and hand filed a chain with a square file and was razor sharp, so I go out to try it without chaps and cut a few small trees behind my house and one started falling towards me, it was no bigger than my wrist, so I grab it to push it out of the way with my right hand and the saw was in my left hand without the trigger pressed and bare touched my left pants around my knee and the saw sucked my pants up and took a 2 inch chunk out of knee, a fraction of a second is all it took and 3 hours in the ER awaited me for that lapse in judgment. It could happen to anyone.
Video was going great till u tried to start the saw and then cutting brother.
I'm not expert on the chainsaw, but I do love this saw, and use the heck out of it.

I try to flip it to keep it wearing on both sides more evenly. It's harder had the STHIL wears off though...easy to forget.

A minute into the video and you're telling us you pay out the ass for premixed gas but then use the cheapest bar oil? If you do some searching online you can find a gas station that sells ethanol free gas. It would still be cheaper than the gallon cans.
I mix it now, since I figured out how to do it super easy with a kitchen scale (Works awesome BTW - just don't let your wife catch you doing it - LOL). This was before I realized I'd go through millions of gallons of gas when clearing our 3.5 acres of wooded land.

Off camera = 2-3 pulls
On camera - 2-300 pulls - LOL!!!!
I also have learned even more with this machine...leave it in the bottom "auto-prime" setting until it "takes" (sometimes 2 pulls) THEN pop it up to run and she'll go on the 3rd of 4th pull, even out of storage.
I LOVE THIS SAW. I only wish I got a bigger one. More money, but HP saves lives in chainsaws.

We can get regular unleaded, but it's more expensive. I like the canned stuff for small engines, where I an. It does get WAY more expensive, but I want to run this chainsaw for a long time. When I got it, I had no idea how much I'd end up using it. It was the first tool I bought when we got this property, and I've used the heck out of it. It's been an invaluable tool!

Everyone has their own comfort level. I have chaps, but don't wear them anymore, but it would definitely be wise to put them on, as you mentioned.

Should not be that hard to start that saw, you doing it wrong.
Anything done in front of an audience will work less reliably.

That would be crazy heavy. These things are not careful about weight, but a nitro engine might be in the cards at some point.

The guy at Ace was kinda like, I hate sharpening these things, and I can imagine doing it in 10 minutes per chain might be a tough thing to do and make money, but for me to do it for myself, $10 per 10 minutes means $60 per hour "saved" less any setup time. I think I just need to do a bunch at the same time, and make it worth while.

Why did u cut trees
These trees were already down. They slid down in a storm last year. When you have literally thousands of trees, you could try to cut them all down with a chainsaw and probably never get them all cut down...they grow faster than one guy can keep up....but our objective to to clean up dead and downed trees primarily. We just planted 75 new trees and 25 new bushes the other day, and will plant another 100 or so in spring.

#1 digging holes with a chainsaw. #2 forcing the saw in the wood and stalling it out. #3 wearing a long loose fitting shirt. #4 No chaps. #5 And last but not least, walking around in between cuts without the chain break engaged. These are the makings of a complete idiot. I could continue but I think you get the picture. And you wonder how people get injured.
Okay Jimmy - just make a better video. This is TH-cam. Instead of listing all your concerns, get off you ass, and go get someone to film for you, then spend the hours to put it all together, and send me the link, and I can pick it apart for you.

Actually "skwrench" I believe. Screwdriver/wrench. It's the tool used to loosen bar nuts/chain tensioner/spark plug. Multi-tool works also. People beat everyone up on youtube if there not 100% on point. I will say this video brought some laughter to my night. However i would agree with most, chainsaws can be really dangerous. Lose footing while saws running, accidentally skwrench the trigger and off goes the arm, leg..etc. Not trying to preach or tell you how to do what you do on your land but...be safe. Next vid will be on the ms 250&1/2 lma&l(lost my arm and leg) . Nothing to do with m-tronic or fuel injection.
