Now this is how it should be explained, plain, simple, to the point, no crazy music, or long drawn out introductions and no story telling in between, wish I could like this 5 more times over.

I've run chainsaws, falling here in B.C. for the past 25 years and this is the first video on filing a saw that I've watched that covered all the important bases without any gizmos or useless info confusing the subject. Well done.
Could not agree more. I'm a casual cutter....I cut only my own firewood. I've been filing my chains like this for 30+ yrs. and this is the first video I've seen explaining this simple method of sharpening a saw chain.
I use mostly hand powered tools, I do my own firewood so it's good and dry when it goes in the stove, and occasionally use an old Echo I got new in '86. Correctly sharpened chains means never straining the motor, or the chain, or Me, which means I've yet to amputate anything. I've demonstrated to others how I sharpen chains, but I can't explain and demonstrate at the same time - no way. I listen to these tutorials because I know it true, and hearing it explained in great detail is somehow comforting, relaxing.
Simple, easy, cheap, without gadgets and unnecessary extra tool. Bravo!

I've been renovating a barn for the past 4 years and of all the videos I've needed to learn from, this is by far the best for a lot of reasons. It's such a simple, beautifully shot video with a teacher that obviously knows what he's doing. What a pleasure to learn from him. Thank You!

I worked with a shipwright back in the 80's - I learned that Shipwrights can do anything! Fix, Fabricate, Repair, Finish, Paint, Restore... They are a combination of Carpenter, Cabinet maker, Cooper, Blacksmith, Rigger and a little lumberjack when needed. Thankyou sir for sharing your vast wealth of knowledge... Great tutorial... 👍

too bad they don't have shop anymore they ought to be teaching these young kids how to do certain things instead of some of their useless math nothing like learning life lessons when I was in grade school I had shop and home economics definitely should put this back in schools

The only thing I would add is that the line on the chain is a wear line that Stihl puts on their chains. Once you file to that line, the chains life is finished. That is the primary reason it is there, the angle is secondary.

Another note I'm not sure if it's on purpose for ease but when the chain was on the bar it was on backwards

As a retired Millwright/Machinist I can say with certainty that this is the best video I have ever watched by a gentleman who knows what he’s at. I always get my best results in the vise also. I never thought about tipping the chain saw over to get the other side of the chain. Thanks for that tip. You sir are a master!

GREAT VIDEO !! I have been sharpening for about a year now and have watched hundreds of videos about sharpening, maintenance, etc. I finally got the hang of it and do pretty well. It all came down to doing it by hand, having the correct file and raker gauge, and most importantly feel. You nailed it in your video and validated what it took me a long time to learn. I wish I had seen this video first before all the rest. Experience is a great teacher and it looks like you have a lot of that. I just wish I could have learned from your experience instead of my trial and error. Thank you.

Outstanding explanation & demonstration on how to properly sharpen a chain & achieve proper raker height. How to properly hold the file & make the cut was excellent. Measuring the raker, removing the gauge first, make the cut, check it again & simply round off the raker's corner for the final touch. This is by far the best tutorial I have seen on this subject. Thank you... :-)

Best sharpening video I have seen !
Having spent 4 years in a sharpening shop that was founded in 1936,
& only fixing chainsaws, I enjoyed this video. Covers all the points
we were taught, down to removing the burr.
(We were told to tap the cutter with a vertical stroke, using the end of the wooden file handle. This would fold the burr down over the cutting edge, and break it off.)
We would often have 20 or 30 chains to sharpen first up in the morning, and did them all by hand. The owner of the shop said that no other way would get the right finish on the cutting edge.
Georg Schwiemann learn from a pro this is a crap way too file a saw, if you work in a saw shop surely your aware of file guides?

haha I'll telll you why its crap , is became every cutter needs to be filled to same size and filled to an exact angle. Free hand filling from my 25 years experience using a chainsaw daily as a proffesional arborist tells me most people can't get the exact angle without a file guide. Stihl, Oregon, and Husqcvarna make fike guides for a reason.

Whether it’s chainsaws, chisels, planes or knives, everyone seems to have an opinion on how to do it or what the latest, greatest gadget for doing it is. There’s no substitute for experience and not only do I wish I had a fraction of this gentleman’s, but his knowledge, skill, eye for detail and patience of a professional should be the benchmark every novice or veteran forester/woodworker, alike, aspire to. I just want to tell you that this video is extremely educational. I have used a file a few times to sharpen a chainsaw but I honestly feel like I could be a novice and never have touched a chainsaw blade or file and be able to come away with a perfectly sharp and safe chainsaw blade. I've never been able to sharpen a chain and have it to work correctly again. Sitting in line with the bar and looking down made all the difference! I'll need to practace to get all the chips the same size but it cuts as fast as it did new. Thank you for this video!

I use a marker pencil to mark the first link in the chain,
so I know when I'm through.

You should be able to tell just by looking at the tooth if it's been sharpened or not. No marker needed
With his method I believe inspection will allow one to know when it’s done. But a marker is probably the best way.
Theyre all supposed to be the same size. Thr marker is for the smallest tooth, then you file them all down to that size
