  • Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943)
    Preludes, Op. 23 (1901, 1903)
    No.1, No.8, No.9, No.6, No.7, No.4, No.5
    Nikolai Lugansky, 2020
    Moscow Conservatory Online Concert
    [0:00] #1 - F♯minor. Largo
    [3:25] #8 - A♭major. Allegro vivace
    [6:40] #9 - E♭minor. Presto
    [8:38] #6 - E♭major. Andante
    [11:28] #7 - C minor. Allegro
    [13:50] #4 - D major. Andante cantabile
    [18:35] #5 - G minor. Alla marcia
“The young composer's marriage in May of 1902 and the impending birth of the couple's first child may have contributed to this amazingly fertile period, a creative re-emergence after the devastating failure of his First Symphony in 1895. In less than three years time he had completed his Second Piano Concerto, the Second Suite for Two Pianos, and the Cello Sonata. The Op. 23 Preludes, with their alternating moods of nostalgic sadness (No. 1), tenderness (No. 4), and heroic vigor (No. 5) and joy (No. 2), can plausibly be regarded as an autobiographical testament. Irina, the couple's daughter, was born on May 14th and Julian Haylock tells us that in response, "Rachmaninoff sat down the very same day and composed his E♭major Prelude (No. 6), a microcosm of wide-eyed innocence and blissful contentment."

If Rachmaninoff wrote these for anyone, it was so that one day a great pianist like Lugansky would come along and interpret them like this.
Each prelude is so masterfully played, (but the C minor stole the show). WOW! Each note was like melted butter!

The way Lugansky plays has always captivated me. The way he controls all the elements and voices of the pieces is incredible. I was holding back tears the entire time...

It's funny, when I listen to him play Rachmaninoff, especially, it's not like his playing is especially indulgent in the moment, what I typically associate with "romantic" works. But when I picture the whole piece and the way he has conceived of it - the extremely delicate spell he weaves balances on a knife-edge, so fragile that a single wrong moment could shatter it - is so daring and if it comes together properly it seems to hit me all at once how incredibly special his vision and execution are, and how truly "romantic" he is at heart for trying to deliver it with so much tender care and attention and hard work. Nobody plays like this if they are not guided by a vision, an ideal that they keep chasing. He plays as though he serves a higher purpose, and I've found it to be consistently evident in all he does. A real romantic.

Absolutely superb. Every sound is so deep and yet the flow is never stagnant. Voicing is out of this world. Emotion is genuine and never fabricated or self indulgent.

Merci Monsieur Lugansky.

Love this performance! Such sensitive and nuanced playing… however - I am FURIOUS that TH-cam is putting ads in the MIDDLE of the pieces… such a mood killer!

Felicitaciones! Al gran pianista Lugansky por su magnífica interpretación. No sigue el orden de los preludios, sin embargo, su secuencia personal implica una excelente y gradual sensibilidad de entrelazamiento. Bravo! Bendiciones desde México.
