      When farmers started buying the guard type dogs, they were disappointed by their lazy behavior. They were used to busy herding type dogs. Then their opinion changed at the end of the season when they realized that they hadn't lost as much stock to predetors. The dogs slept a lot, but did their best work at night when the preditors were out. They realized that the expensive priced dogs were well worth it.
      Or they could just by a donkey.

    • @brucealvarez9263
      @brucealvarez9263 4 ปีที่แล้ว +75

      Generally speaking livestock guardian dogs are most active at night when the major predators like foxes and coyotes are out. During the day they may look like they are dead to the world but their ears aren't asleep and they have EXCELLENT hearing. They'll be up in half a second and running if they perceive a threat. Don't take that napping as ignoring their job because they are listening and smelling for danger 24x7.

    • @WobblesandBean
      @WobblesandBean 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I love quail! You are right, they're easy to raise and reach slaughter weight lickety split, but they don't offer much meat. Rabbits are a better option imo; just as fecund, just as compact (two hutches is really all you need), just as fast to raise and slaughter, but you get a lot more meat per animal.

    • @klaudia711

    Morgan, when you showed the footprint of that deer, if I'm not mistaken, it looks like you have a very sandy, Sandy Loam type of soil. If it is, I'm surprised your buddy Albert didn't advise the use of a clay liner. It would be like me building a pond here on the Upper Niagara Escarpment with all the fractured rock, and not sealing the pond. Of which I built and lined.

    • @Kimmie6772
      @Kimmie6772 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah I live in a southern marsh type area and if the soil didn't have that bit of clay layer around a shallow water table, the local creek would dry out a lot faster in the summer. Then again we also have lots of stormy rain to keep it going.

    Your sense of humor is excellent, but when coupled with your delivery it is priceless. The delivery to which I am referring is your expression, the sincerity of your voice and demeanor, and the perfect timing of the elements including slight delays of words or phrases when coupled with your facial movements, and how it is all timed for maximum effect. This is what makes you one of the best "storytellers" I have run across in a long time. Of course, this is all added to your video editing skills which shine brightly. I'd bet that in college or after that when you and a group of your peers got together, if you indicated you had some short event or historical story to tell, everyone shut up and actually listened intently. You may even have been known in your circle of peers as the "head storyteller" or something along those lines. This also adds value to all of your older videos which I am making time to listen to (I rarely do that when I pick up a new channel - time is a valuable commodity for all of us). I hope your channel lasts forever and a day! .

    This weekend my hubby and I tried to introduce two of our 5 week old ducklings to our adult ducks. It did not go well at all. We introduced a new drake to the ladies about 3 months ago without any issues. So, we will have to try to let them get about adult size before we try it again. Thanks so much for sharing your videos with us. I have learned a lot watching how you handle your birds.

    That's so cool that your pond has tadpoles!!! You know, frogs and toads are close to endangered. Many MANY animals depend on eating frogs. Scientists are worried about a collapse... anyway it's sooooo cool you are accidentally supporting the frogs breeding!

      And don't frogs also eat mosquitoes and mosquito's (eggs? Is that the right word). Less mosquitos is always nice.

    Yay! I'm trying to buy a small house, but with some land. My BFF keeps on about the mowing of lawns, as I have health issues, that I'll spare you! I was insisting I would turn any lawn into a meadow, but she isn't hearing that. Goslings?! THIS she'll hear. Thank you! I just don't want her worrying, because I need some space and land, after 30 years in the city I went to Uni in. Cheers.

    Morgan, Another great video. If you can master sufficiency of neglect, you have it made. We use our three chickens as gardeners. They have free range. Some things have suffered, but we will plant more of what has survived. Soil tilled, weeds eaten, snails, slugs and mice consumed..... fresh eggs! Great addition to our household. Take care. Regards to Alison. Regards Stephen.

    It’s nice to find someone else who sees the value of waterfowl. Despite my geese being well-behaved most people still think they can’t be anything other than mean. I have four babies this year (slightly older than yours at 2/3 feathered but not yet honking) and they can get 10sqft down to golf course grass in 3 hours or less.
