    Those shutters sound like the sound samples used in movies. Nice bridge between the’ filmographer’ and photographer . Pretty sure this is a good way to grow in your work , keeping the focus and select what matters most to catch the feeling and character of your own style.

    You can use leaf shutter lenses on that Mamiya as well. They are expensive, but you can sync up to the shutter speed.

    For the limited speed when using flash with the pentax, get a lens with leaf-shutter. Great vid!

    I really enjoyed watching this, thanks. I was thinking about getting a Pentax 645N but now will also look for a Mamiya 645 AFD. I suppose I will end up getting the one that I see a good offer on as I looked on Ebay and there wasn't any Mamyia 645 AFDs.

    Nice overview. Saw the 645AF standard setup (80 f2.8, 120 back) available for less than $400 and was tempted. And yes, developing and scanning at home is the only reasonable way to go regardless of format. I suspect that soon you'll be a convert to "scanning" via camera, I mean what the heck, you have an R5 !!
    I love the handling on the Elan II, although I got a great deal on the Elan 7 and battery grip and out of laziness use that more (the 7 is also more reliable and a little faster maybe than the Elan II). With great lens selection I wouldn't trade them for anything, although am interested in the EOS 3 and maybe ... one of the later EOS 1's.

    Great video, great vibe and you're so right about Instagram recycling and about the gearheads - it's now getting so bad, the next guy with a beard, a hat, lo-fi hiphop soundtrack talking about his latest most favourite camera every single week is just turning into one big joke....
    But here you were comparing the Mamiya with its small F2.8 prime lens and the Pentax with a huge, heavy and slow, medium aperture zoom lens on it. I bought the same Pentax 645N with two huge zoom lenses, sold the zoom lenses immediately and got than my money back for the camera and some more. Went for a tiny & fast 75 F2.8 AF and the manual 35, 55 & 150mm. Compact, very sharp lenses. If you're really "romantic", you can adapt many lenses to the Pentax with a simple adapter, including Hasselblad and crazy Pentacon six mount Russian medium format lenses. That, and the price was one of the reasons I went for Pentax 645. I use digital for work, but I do enjoy to use film in my free time, as a counterweight. I just don't grow a beard and make videos on youtube about it.

  • @richieduque

    AH I love the Mamiya 645AF. My favorite camera. I totally agree with everything you've said here. It doesn't get a lot of love because film right now is all about romance. But the most functionally practical cameras are Canon EOS film SLRs that work with modern EF lenses and the Mamiya 645AF. Also, so agree with the color is just exactly what I've always been chasing for, and the edits are much more minor compared to digital edits. And yes please fuck with film tones haha! Do be careful with the cameras though, bc my Canon EOS 1N and Mamiya 645AF BOTH stopped working on the same exact shoot day, after only owning them for about half a year (luckily I had a FujiX100F to finish the day). Brought them to a very reputable camera repair place in NYC and they said there was nothing that could be done. I hope your videos don't bring the Mamiya up more in price though haha. Great content!

    It is worth noting that the af mamiya is a more recent camera. The 645N when compared to the most recent non af mamiya 645 makes a lot more sense. A mamiya 645 pro tl has a max shutter of 1000, has more physical controls like the pentax, and is generally more comparable in terms of modernity of the design. Really with the mamiya vs the pentax (with both the pro tl and the af) you've gotta ask yourself if you really are going to interchange the backs as much as you think you are. Another important thing is these mamiya 645 af cameras occasionally run across issues with the shutter getting stuck and are a little less easy to find than the 645n or the 645 pro tl. Also, if you look more in depth into pentax glass you'll find there are lenses that perform well, comparable to offerings from mamiya and contax systems. The decision with all of this stuff comes down to price.

  • @KNURKonesur

    There is a lot of videos on youtube comparing Pentax 645 vs Mamiya 645 Pro TL or AFD... Why does nobody compare the Pentax 645 vs Mamiya 645E, which would be an actual head to head? :D The AFD is a very different beast than any of the 645 Pentax models. Anyway, a great video regardless! :D

    Howdy! Isn't it interesting that you parted with Fujifilm 50R, which has film simulations and no scanning hassle, yet got back to older 645 film cameras and backs? Would you say Mamiya 645 is more comfortable to shoot with and/or images have more special look to them (with or without editing)? -Regards, Mikhail

    At 1:26 it's an EOS 55E/ELAN IIE is a terribly important point: 35mm AF film vs 645 AF film photography. 35mm is a lot less expensive still a lot more versatile. The "only" advantage of 645 is the frame is bigger, 56 x 42 mm vs 36x24mm. So, to shoot 56x42 frames with AF, you pay exorbitantly lot more for the gear: $2000 (Mamiya 645 afd III) vs $50. If you are ok with manual focus 56x42mm or 56x56 or even bigger could be a lot less expensive.

    • @cammackey

  • @randallstewart175
    @randallstewart175 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Pentax has better quality lenses. Some of the Mamiya lenses are great and some stink. The Pentax has a better quality build and is more reliable. The Pentax is cheaper. If you shoot a significant amount of flash, neither camera are suitable for lack of a reasonable synch speed. (Get a Bronica ETrsi instead.) The interchangeable backs a re important for me, so between the two I'd look at the Mamiya, but I'd buy a Bronica. And, I'm fully invested in a Pentax 67 system where the lenses can be used on the Pentax 645, so that's saying a lot.) This guy sorts his preference by build quality attributed to the sound of a shutter/mirror action - an Idiot.

    Loved your analysis on 'gear' photographers...lotsa blah blah blah...haven't shot diddly shit. It's kind of too bad that you feel your work demands AF. You're going to miss out on the best film cameras and lenses. I'll just say that I know you're not shooting wide open because your DOF has model and product in focus. For those of us old guys who cut their teeth on MF and thought a winder was a gift from god - I'll just guess that you feel disconnected from the model because you aren't any good at manual focus. Anything that isn't fluid and natural will do that. MF's a skill just like an ollie, or a wheelie, or dropping in....I did a two day paid event before covid all on MF with peaking. Even when I had less than 2 minutes to set up lighting, and shoot portraits between gigs. Rack past, pull back and shoot. Once you learn the throw on your fav lens you'll get fast - I promise. Just a suggestion. Good work..love your stuff. Quality.

    • @cammackey
      @cammackey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Chip Rock for all my video work I use the ZCam E2 S6 and rely on peaking heavily. I nail 95% of my shots. So I know hot to manual focus, but jsut rather not be slowed down by it on film cameras. I don’t have the greatest eyes either so auto focus just streamline s everything.
