We have chickens, so mine get composted chicken poo.
Our tiny plot is also surrounded by little year-round streams, so I planted the Blueberries about 5 feet from the moist soil next to one of the streams.
I must prune them this year as one of them is now ten + feet tall and bending over, but is heavy laden with fruit.
I picked B B for years for a farmer, love picking, but now I grow my own and have new plants to go out into the garden , thanks for the tips. In B C Canada zone 6
I love watching and sharing your videos with friends. I am not much in to big gardening and a fig tree I planted is still not giving any fruits after five years but my neighbor’s already getting fruits after one year!.. so discouraged by that.

@EazyT839, If you have clay soil (alkaline,) plan to only grow a few blueberry plants and have a small backyard, then I think it would be easier to grow them in large pots. That is how I am growing mine. Easiest to bags of growing mix that are made for acid-loving plants. Because the acid mix is usually made for the ground and not for potting, I like to amend for better drainage. I add a little perlite and coco coil to the mix. __If your pot only has one drain hole, then add more. If you see videos that tell you to add rocks at the bottom of the pot, DON'T do it. It is a garden myth and contrary to its intended purpose, it can lead to root rot (I can cite respected sources for info.) __Even if the tag reads that the variety is self-fertile/self-fruitful, it is still better to get two different varieties (of the same type.) The cross pollination is supposed to give larger fruit and better yield. __I use rainwater (neutral to slightly acidic,) for my fruit plants because our tap water is alkaline. When I run out of rainwater I can add vinegar to my tap water to lower Ph, but that is only a temporary fix. So, I purchased the Jobe's soil acidifier pellets (Sulfur,) to mix into the top 6 inches of soil. It takes time for the soil microbes to break down the Sulfur into Sulfuric acid.

Thank you so much! I did serious soil amendment, digging out a deep and wide hole. I included peat and a small amount of sand with the composted soil, as the bed they went into was a clay soil shrub bed. That was not fun to dig by hand, but at least someone else removed the shrubs. I recall sprinkling something in, so that must have been an acidifier.
I fertilized them this spring and they seem to be doing fine. We have had a lot of rain. I was worried some that our downspout right above them was clogged and dumping over the top and flooding the ground between the two, but maybe that was a blessing in disguise. Between cutting down a locust tree nearby, which also allows more sunlight, and the massive spring rains, the downspout is working properly now,just dumping nearby.

I just found this channel today and I’m so happy this is so wholesome. I had a plant phase in the beginning of the pandemic but adhd makes it hard to water plants and I spend all my energy tending to my pet frogs. I recently started working with my mum because I love doing the planting part but am terrible at long term care while she is the opposite, and now we have a balcony garden that’s really beginning to thrive. Almost immediately, we noticed bugs starting to appear. First aphids, but then beetles, paper wasps, hover flies, and even a cicada. I was shocked because we live on the 15th floor of a high rise city apartment and have less than two square meters of space. About a month ago, I planted some blueberries in pots and to my surprise, within a week a beautiful native bird found it’s way to our balcony and ate a blueberry and a half. The next day, almost all the blueberries were gone.
I have decided that these birds are friends, and that as long as what I am planting is safe and healthy for them, I’m more than happy to share. The plants are still tiny and there are no blueberries right now but I’ve already decided to dedicate half the space to growing blueberries so that there will be enough for not only my mum and I, but also the birds.

I was curious if you had ever tried growing a type of pigeon pea used in the tropics. In Puerto Rico this plant is called glandules. I live in zone 8b in SC and my wife has had good success. Of course this is a plant we enjoy , but perhaps not everyone. Just curious .

My native soil is very alkaline. Even my water is alkaline!
Even so, I have been able to grow blueberries in pots of 100% peat moss and I try to water with rain water. And lots of soil acidifiers as you said.

Yes, we only prune for shape, they are a bush, so they will keep getting bigger and produce.

Wow. Beautiful berries. We love blueberries but it’s often too tart. We’re on the cooler west side of San Francisco. Do you think it is warm enough to produce sweet berries.
Thank you very much. btw, wood chips are either hardwood or conifer. Hardwood (deciduous) chips are alkaline to neutral and should not be used with BBs. Coniferous chips should be used with BBs. Pine bark mulch is most commonly used for BB mulch. Many use vinegar to acidify soil, but many ag scholars and other experts recommend against vinegar, saying it is too harsh or intense for the soil microbiome and roots, even when diluted. Yes, BB like moisture, but they like flow-through moisture, not sitting in moist soil. For this reasons, rock minerals are good for aeration and drainage. Since sphagnum peat moss is non-renewable and unsustainable, and coconut coir is not sustainable, pumice and the new Growstones seem the best of the many options (Growstones are recycled glass that look and feel like pumice), but outperform it according to the company that makes it.
I will try your methods and see if I do better. Have two bb plants, but will propagate 20 like you've suggested for a yield of 5. Will let you know how it goes!!!

what kind of container variety is suitable to grow in Northern California. I live in Folsom CA , would love to grow blueberry, but cannot grow them in the ground as we have our neighbors big oak trees near to our fence. So looking for some container varieties

Great video.. although I disagree with the the established PH recommendations. The literature firstly does not consider Redox (Eh) as PH is not independent, and secondly at the recommended range for PH, you'll have a hard time seeing calcium uptake which is where size and firmness will be determined. Anyway great video!

My hound dog loves berries. If she gets near our blueberry bushes she will eat every berry! The bottom 3 feet of our saskatoon bushes are stripped clean from the dog. If I'm in the greenhouse she will sit outside and bark at me until I give her a strawberry. haha

I've recently bought 2 blueberry plants and potted them in containers. I've used soil specific to the needs of the blueberries but my berries taste sour. What do they need to sweeten up? Will Epsom Salts make them sweeter?

For strawberries, I don't experience any disease issues. I use neem oil for white flies sometimes. UPick went great this year. Thanks for asking!

Your info going to help me greatly I’m sure! I have a few blueberry plants but there not doing very well. Unfortunately my soil is clay too! Have no idea what the ph is? But I’m sure it’s not right either? Blueberries I do get aren’t so much ate by the birds so much, it’s the darn deer that love my blueberries. They seem to get my berries before I do! So that’s another problem I got to deal with as well! I do have this dream of having long rows of nothing but huge growing blueberry plants as far as the eye can see! That’s the dream, reality several rows a 100 ft long or so I be happy! 😂 Hopefully I’m the near future I can least get a good start? Thanks again for your info!
Hello! If I could give you a small bit of advice for protection against the birds AND I bet it would stop the deer too...but a fabric called tulle. It has smaller holes than bird netting, which the blueberries pop thru and can be eaten. I purchase tulle on Ebay by the bolt, 40 yards, 54 inches wide for around $10. I cover my bushes using clothes pins to attach. I experimented last year and covered 4 plants and it was a game changer!! NO bird damage at all!! So I will be covering ALL 14 of my plants this year with the tulle!! Good luck and happy gardening!!
Soil ph is the n1 problem. Most people‘s soil is not acidic enough by a long shot.

I should have know to check here first. Lots of people telling us what to do, when they are only repeating nonsense they hear from someone else! Also learned that sandy soil tends to be more acidic, from a university, which is great since my soil is as sandy as it gets.
