- All 4 horses went to our Amish farrier neighbor today to have their shoes reset and learn about why my draft horses wear shoes. Come along and watch as the Percherons get a hoof trim and their shoes reset and listen in on my conversation with Eli as he does his work.
Watch Part 1 to see the Belgians get on their shoes! - • DRAFT HORSES: Going To...
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Top video , Please thank the Amish Gentelman for being so accomadating in the filming . a true craftsman of his art.
Best wishes From U.K
His precision with the hammer is mesmerizing

When you said there isn't a working horse out there that doesn't have something going on I totally agreed. We all work with a little kink here or a sore spot there. I'm happy you understand that and help your teams with their little mishaps
I don't know how I missed this one, but I came back and enjoyed watching it. Thanks again Jim, and have a nice safe day!!
It was so nice of him to allow you to film and respectful try to hide the kids faces when the horse started peeing I thought someone turned on a hose and then realized it was the horse
Pretty desperate for a pee to do it there, they don't like to get splashed. He'd had that trailer ride, then an hour or so wait for his pard to get shod first.
So glad to hear Buck is ok. I have grown very fond of your horses from watching your videos. They are such hard working yet gentle animals. How could one not love them. Thank you for the update.
I've watched other video's with Ely, and I for one am very appreciative, that he allows you to video him working. or videoing him period. Its nice to watch a gud Farrier at work. he does do nice work. Thank you Ely, and thanks Jim for sharing.
Dam..3 drafts back to back! Hand this man a beer. ✊ Respect
The anvil he has remarkable , I like his roll away tool carrier ! Stay safe ! Bob
Loved how Eli handled his son. Thanks for the peek into Amish life.
Wonderful to watch this guy at work, the 4 horses are beautiful.
It’s been a pleasure to watch,Thankyou.🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🇬🇧🇬🇧
Eli shows so much respect for his work. Please again thank him for letting us in to see his work. Like his anvil to.. Sounded good. Nice ping to it. We always had split hoofs on our light colored hoofed horses compared to the darker color ones.
Cows are the same way - dark hooves are much harder than light color
Sorry to tell you but there is no difference in hardness in hoof color it’s just a pigment.
@@lawrencep7897 dont be sorry.. Its just the lighter color hoofs always cracked or chiped more then the darker ones..
@@lawrencep7897 Every horse I've come across that had a white foot had issues. I was lucky w/my grey mare, she had 4 black feet & went shoeless except for snowshoes in winter. No issues w/my ex-racehorses black feet too. He did wear shoes year-round though because he was 3..
Thank you for sharing Eli, a craftsman.
couple of hard working guys :)
I really appreciate the stand and padded areas where to ties their hooves, so much gentler than the ones I’ve seen that just stick them between there knees and the horses look so uncomfortable. Well done excellent job.
Oakum is composed of coarser vascular tissue of flax or hemp or old and twisted rope impregnated with tar creating caulking to pack joints in wooden shipbuilding, plumbing, masonry, or horseshoeing. It was also used in weatherizing early log cabins. Siri did the research for me.
Good to see the little future farrier too.
So relaxing watching them get their feet done
Hi sexy woman. How are you doing today? And how is the weather over there??????
Wonderful care! Shoes looking good. Farrier has some skills! Thank him for sharing his talent with us.
Hi Jim.
Part 2. 👌.
This farrier is pretty good.
Each draft has thier own personality. ❤👍
I have to say i have never seen a more ingenious rig to get shoeing done. Such a great idea for the horses especially the big ones like the draft horses. I wonder if he could make it a little wide for when Lady is bred cos she is going to get bigger.. it makes fighting with the hooves when the horses get a little uncomfortable and they are secure in the space so they don't topple over.. He also does great work too which is great, it is so hard to find a good farrier these days. Tell him i think he is an excellent farrier.
Great video Jim. I just love those big horse's . Thanks to Eli for letting us see his work . That is an art. I have an old anvil just like he has perty cool .
Hie Jim--I have much respect for you. The way that you work with your horses and the good care that you give them is so wonderful to watch. May God give you and your family a good life.
AMEN, brother !!
Wow fascinating stuff...Eli is so skilled...enjoyed this
Your draft horses are gorgeous. They look well taken care of. I saw a lot of the draft horses when I lived in Belgium. They keep them for pets and /work horses. They have some really kool contests too. It is held in this quaint town and all the farmers bring in the foals born within a certain period of time. The competition is really close. Fun to watch.
very enjoyable watching the last two get their shoes all fixed up.
Loved this video it cracked me up when (around 9:35) the son started fishing
My dad farmed with horses but when I was about 2yrs old he replaced them with an Farmal F-20
Thanks Jim and your family for letting us experience a bit of what it's like working with Horses
Big thxs to Eli. It was really some cool to learn. Thxs Jim
Jim, this is great stuff. Thanks for showing us
BEAUTIFUL HORSES JIM, THEY LOOK VERY WELL. I RIDE RACEHORSES IN UK.
Excellent educational content. Thank you all for sharing with those of us who would never have the opportunity to experience this.
Amazing channel. I'm going back as far as I can to watch all your videos
Great! There are a lot of them to watch, hope you enjoy them
Thank you for sharing. I think Jim deserves a new pair of shoes. LOL.
So glad to see you don’t dock their tails!!!
Interesting you say that. I would not be watching if they were docked, really don't like it, the tail is a rudder!
Kathy Ark Good Job getting the horses their selenium trace mineral so good.
He did a good job! Looks good too! And he doesn't horse around!!
The horses don't horse around either, and its easy on his back, they can lean on the stump.
That pun will get you hoofed out of here!
Your Ferrier did a Great Job, GOOD LUCK WITH THE MEDS‼️👍👍. Vinny 🇺🇸
It’s all a learning curb for us all Jim. Learning the health for our animals is learning the health of ourselves.
We are all creatures of this earth and we all have torsos and bodies that all are very similar and having same problems and suffer from similar infections and disease.
The difference between animals and humans is animals can’t communicate their health problems but we can as human speak to our Doctor to say this and that about what’s wrong with us.
So writing all this we are the eyes and mouth for all our animals and pets. Believe it not the more of the same animals makes us better health guardians as we can compare to get results.
A very big responsibility and you do well. I love the gentleness of your horses and we all know where that comes from.
I don’t like to ride horses but I still admire them as due to an accident many years ago.
I find your videos are excellent showing the people who watch your videos how to work love and play and also most of all - enjoy them. 🤣🤷🏻♂️🥳😎
A wonderful ferrier! Glad you have such a great help so close by.
you're horsesarea farriers dream, great disposition, thank you sir and the barn renovation is coming along nicely
The ferrier is amazing , so interesting to watch , best of luck , stay safe ! Bob
Watched this VERY interesting video clip again for a second time !!
Great video. Thank you 👍you have beautifull horses Jim,,greetings from belgium
Hello!
I’ve been waiting for this one! Thank you for sharing!
Your horses are beautiful 😊
Another Awesome video Jim, Tks.
Tell Eli this Ark.boy seeing his work. I learned to shoe my own saddle horses so I understand how it affects a tall person...had to quit a few yrs back...too hard on my back.
That's...enjoyed seeing his work...
Will try to pass that on
Eu amo cavalos, e amando esse canal, moro no Brasil🇧🇷🇧🇷, Deus abençoe muito todos vocês!! 🐎🐎🐎🐎
Olá e obrigado por assistir do Brasil.
Could you talk/interview the farmer with the pumpkin patch about how he grows the pumpkins and other tips, Amish farmers really know what they’re doing! Thanks
I’d like to, but I doubt he’d let me
Great video and you answer my questions on one that gets back out thanks 🙏
Good to know about selenium supplement. Hope it works for all four.🐴🐴🐴🐴
Thanks Jim!!
Good video Jim. Not something your ordinary person ever sees. I noticed you back that horse out, and again, so thanks for explaining. I get "just something I gotta do...." I got into trouble from a boss (trail ride outfit in the Snowy) one day, caught a little mare from the off side, she was impossible on the left and always presented that way, boss went crook, an old bushman backed me up when I said "Not worth the fight, she's off sided and why make an issue of it?" With horses, the "right" way is always whatever works. Horse has his reasons, we gotta read them. I love this channel.
Thanks for sharing your story and thanks for watching
@@WorkingHorsesWithJim ...I am enjoying this channel immensely!
I was watching Greg Judy's TH-cam channel. He puts out a big box with about ten different types of salts/minerals for his cattle and lets them dose themselves. I wonder if something like that would work for your horses. Greg knows his land is lacking certain minerals but he says the cattle know what they need. Horses are way smarter than cattle so I wonder if they would benefit from a similar arrangement.
They do actually. My horses only go to a mineral block when they need it. Plus they get the dosage their body needs
But if you look at Greg Judy's box the different minerals and salts are separate. The cows only choose the ones they need; the ones that are absent from his fields. That way the cows are actually enriching the fields with the specific salts that are lacking.
Thanks, Jim!
👍👌🇨🇦❤, gr8 stuff Jim, and Bill puttin' out a fire
😀
Thank you for the video. I wondered how you handle a horse that size.
Beautiful horses.
Your horses are magnificent.
Beautiful horses and so enjoyed watching these two video's of them getting shoed.
Hi how are you doing today
Thank you that was very informative in more ways than one.
A million thanks to Eli for not hot-shoeing! His eye is able to see what needs adjusting without drying out the feet with that procedure.
The most important part of keeping a shoe on is the fit of the shoe to the foot, and the horses environment
And stand away from the horse when he is pissing.
Good video - Thanks.
You mentioned hoof color hardness as related to black or gray percherons… I’m a dog groomer and I find( also bred Bouvier des Flandres for years) that it’s the same in certain dog breeds also… light nails are no where near as hard as black nails in certain breeds. Although they say Appaloosa have hooves of iron and their hooves are supposed to be striped! So… but my perch/quarter mare was a freckled gray and her hooves were not super hard so…who knows!!!😂♥️‼️love your videos!!♥️🤗
Jim i like all your horses i wood like to ride all of them im 62 year old and i had never ben on a horses i wish i live there i counth help you GOD Bless you all
Thanks!
When my father and I farmed it in northern upstate new York (oneida county) Remsen Ny ,, we had problems with selenium deficiency, the calves sometimes born with ( white muscle disease) we gave the calves a nasal treatment for it at birth , prevent cows were given injections, we also top dress the cattle with salt ,minerals and selenium, a lot of upstate ny, soil.is low in selenium and so is it's grass .
He does a great job cleaning out the frog of the bottom of the hoof Wish we new about this person for replacing horse shoes We always did our own feet on our horses feet
Watching the shoeing, I noticed a lot of bacteria on the whiteline in the hoof. I find if you dig it out some, and use Coppertox, it will help kill the bacteria and restore the laminae
They are so shiny. 😍
I hope the new mineral helps with your horses health.
Salut tank you vidéo magnifique super
Gorgeous horses😍
Love the horses and enjoyed you showing us how they shoe ...
Pretty pretty horses !
Your horse lost all his gasoline!!!!!! I had my quarter horse gelding for 14 years and he only did that in front of me twice in all that time! Ken has no shame! Lol
Need close up video of the hoofs.
Love your videos, so informative. Please don't go Hollywood like so many others have done. My two favorite u tuber's (I won't mention their names) started out as a rancher and the other was a Homesteader. Both have gone Hollywood. I understand their motivation, they need to generate income, and I don't hold that against them but their videos have become unwatchable to me. I just want information, the nuts and bolts like your videos provide. Thank you again. I'm a fan.
Thanks for watching, we will try to just share our life
I don't see Jim and Brenda going to Hollywood any time soon
Extremely fascinating. Why not give him a personal thank you by replacing the hammer that disappeared
Interesting video
Great videos on shoeing the horses!
the thing I noticed the most was how the amish fellow did Not scold the little girl playing with his tools but was very kind and gentle with her- like you he makes a great dad
I thought it was a little boy !!
That is a boy as he had pants on Amish girls wear dresses
1:30 yep, that’s a Percheron
what does he charge for reset? New shoes? and for repairing the hoof w/shoes? just curious; it has been one or two years since my uncles in New York (upstate in the southern tier. about 35 miles N. of Penn line) they only used them on the fields they'd lease for hay & the grades were steep. Plus a place to stick a few kids, to keep them out of the way. Remember to ensure they do not get too much selenium in your mineral mix from vet.
just slam your trailer door on his trailer why dont ya, haha. nice vid. ty for sharing it with us
Jim, another great video thanks
I was once told by an older gentleman that white and striped hooves tend to be a little softer than a black hoof
Be careful with selenium to much can do as much damage as not enough
I didn't notice a forge in Eli's shop does he only do cold forged shoes or is his forge just out of site
Really enjoy your videos thanks again
He may have a problem getting soft coal as he would have a religious prohibition against using propane and O2 forge .
@@nikkolettguyer4913
I'm sorry but they use propane for lights and for refrigeration many amish have 1000 lb propane tanks also O2 is used for cutting not in a forge
Thanks for the advise on the selenium. I’m not sure about if he uses cold forge for shoes, I’ll have to ask
@@WorkingHorsesWithJim
Cold forge is just bending the shoe with not heat
I assume you buy shoes and he adjusts them cold like in the video
I love the Amish people.
i love amish meals
The Belgians are beautiful what do you use the horses for but just wondering I just started watching you and I love your videos thank you very much.
They are used for farm work and for logging. We have lots of videos if you are interested.
Excellent video. Thank you very much. One question: When the black horse, Ken, was backing out of the trailer, how did he know when to step down at the door of the trailer since he was going backward? Practice or memory?
Yes, practice, but I do tell him also when he gets to the back of the trailer
I'm gonna look again at the end bit where he comes out, reckon he can see it, they got 360 degree vision. He also listening to Jim all the time, lot of words and sounds they know.
a horse can darn near see in 360 degrees, the equine isa amazing creature, power, agility and the dont sleep very much
your audio sounds choppy hard to listen too. seem to be only in the pickup tho. because the barn sound is good.
Thank you for the update on buck. Any idea what the mineral is called that the vet prescribed ? I'd like to try it on my gelding
It's from Animal Health International and it's called Vita Flex Pro Accel Health and Wellness
the horses are beautiful
Our older horses love when the Ferrier comes. The 2 year-old is more sassy, and doesn't like to be told what to do 😉
They all have their own personality!
When ya said that you wish ya had more help to run them, what exactly did ya mean? More chores then you have time for? You have two teams but can’t be in two places 🤔 seems like it’s everywhere, no one wants to work 😳
Ferrier know he’s job👍
Like I explained in Part 1 for those who just joined this video, using a product called Hoof Flex will help. You brush it on daily to moisturize the hooves and prevents quarter cracks which your lovely drafts have, or will prevent sand cracks. Shoeing stops cracking as well, but moisturizing is the trick. Thanks for your Amish friend for his help and patience in teaching. Lovely big giants the draft breed is and yours are exceptionally calm too. Well loved and cared for. Thanks :~)
What size baldder does that big boy have? Must be at least a gallon!
sure seems it, don't know the bladder size!
I remember my aunts reassuring me that the horses enjoy the day being shoed like women enjoy a visit for a manicure and pedicure.
Jim that was so cute... was he good? Like your taking the kids to the doctor or the dentist...lol. For me like the dog groomers.
what do you feed them daily as far as oats, minerals, calfmana and salt percentage wise? Do you feed any extra minerals?
Got to go you gotta go and he had to go...lol.
I could listen to that pounding on the anvil all day long. I guess your nails could be different by your hair color stranger things happen. How often do you change shoes... when there needed? I only worked on the race track we changed them everytime.
Got a new pair of shoes! So pretty...
Some the feed questions are answered in my top 5 feeding practices. The horses were pretty good getting their shoes on.
Can I ask, how much does it cost to get your horses hoof trimmed and reshoed?
knis01 it varies so much, I guess I shouldn’t say what he charges me.
I used to pay $100 every 6 weeks back in 1986 for my horse who had navicular and needed orthopedic shoes! Can't imagine what this cost! Lol Louboutons on Percherons! Thanks to your Amish gentleman for allowing us to watch!
In my lifetime in Australia, I'm 73, price has gone from one pound a set (5 shillings a shoe) to $100 ($25 a shoe). That's a 500% hike.
How tall is the trailer you are using? Is it 8 ft wide or just standard 7 1/2?
