I worked in a gun store with an indoor range for 6 yrs and was required to carry. My gun was a beautiful Sentanel mark 4 9shot .22mag double action revolver with a 3inch barrel. It was extremely accurate and stopped any animal I ever shot with out any problems. I have fired over a thousand rounds without a single misfire.
That was the VERY first pistol I owned, but I came across it as a teenager during rather questionable times and sold it for WAY less than it was worth, I still until this day regret that now knowing the value and how awesome it was. I always ask people, ever seen a 9 shot 22 revolver? Always hear, nope
I realize this is an old video,it just showed up on my feed I found it interesting. Thought I would throw this out. I purchased one of those Heritage 22-22 mag pistols years ago ,gave 100$ new in box. It’s a shorter 3.5 inch barrel. Got it so as to have a cheap gun to keep in the truck to use for dispatching feral hogs I catch in my hog traps. Over the years now have shot just about everything under the sun through it, never had a single misfire. Settled primarily on two rounds in particular for hog dispatching, Federal 50 grain game shok. Jhp . And CCI 40 grain maxi or mini mag ( I forget) fmj . Now take this for what it’s worth, that little pistol, with those rounds, at point blank range out to about about 10 feet , with a head shot , will drop a 250 lb feral hog like a sack of turds. That’s dead in its tracks . I most definitely would not ever want to be shot with a 22 mag . Ever. That’s my 2 cents.
I head shot a 670+lb hog 6 times and it stopped running at me on shot 7. Far from dead still and eating still I shit u not. 380acp super defense hp. I gave him 2 more rounds trying to put him out of his misery and he still wouldn’t die. He was shot already with a 22lr before I got there. My buddy killed finally killed it with a sledgehammer. 22mag over 380 any day
Thanks for sharing. Gives me comfort. Just bought the exact revolver, 3.5" barrel, birdshead grip. Haven't taken receipt of it yet but the one thing I know is that 22WMR is effective on a number of 4 and 2 legged critters not to mention Gators down here in Texas.
@@rumtumdrumr3922funny. This old post keeps coming back. Remember shot placement is key . On a hog ,when I say a head shot, I dont mean between the eyes. In mean (IN) the eye, or in the earhole. My wife and I both carried a .22 for S.D purposes for many years. We had JUST decided to switch up a bit. For me a charter arms .38 wheel gun (I preferred wheel guns my entire life) and for the wife an LCP .380 ( she wanted smaller then her Ruger SR22) perfect video to see right now, thank you.
When looking at the gel test shown here my thought was, "I never want to be hit by either of these." Modernized ammo has really kept so many old calibers viable. Small arms all over the world are still basically using the same 100+ year old designs. Love it.
This was a great test; however, I would have preferred to see a better representation of a 22 magnum carry gun. I believe that a Ruger LCR, S&W j-frame, Taurus or Charter Arms snub would have been great (I'm not a fan of NAA one inch barrel single-actions for self-defense carry). That being said, I understand that it may be difficult to get access to one of these just for an afternoon test. Thanks very much for your efforts and sharing with us, Sam! :)
Yeah, I would like a snub in .22 Mag, but knowing what they are not capable of, I thought why not buy the cheap long barrel revolver and show it. In a snub I would probably lose 25% of the energy I got, bringing it not far off from .22 LR. That's my whole thing with .22 Mag snubs, is they really are not worth it, but when you get over 3" of barrel it starts to become worth it.
If you have never owned and shot a SW 351 Pd 7 shot 22 magnum you are missing out on one of the most fun to shoot , reliable and great looking revolvers ever made . Those Gold Dots do very well out of the 351 Pd. Exit holes are the size of a .38 bullet on critters like Coon , possums and armadillo.
A 4 inch revolver isn't too hard to conceal with a coat or a flannel shirt.. Especially in winter months. For summer carrry, it's not always comfortable.
@@scottphipps3577 I live in Texas and carry a 4 inch Ruger Sp101 OWB in jeans and a Tshirt over it. It isn't hard if you have a good belt and a good holster.
I have a 4.75" RR in 22lr/22wmr and love it. Never had any issues so far, kids love shooting it because it has absolutely no recoil. Keep up the videos, they are informative.
Some people will say a 380 acp is underpowered. I’ve carried my PPK for years and I have total confidence with premium defensive loads that it’ll stop a threat. It’s all about shot placement, and confidence in what you carry.
People say a lot of stuff with confidence, but nobody wants a hole in them that isnt suppose to be there. Any caliber is good for conceal carry - so why not be comfortable with it? 380 is more than adequate - one thing I dont like about the gun community is how many elitists there are.
The .380 is a decent round if you carry ball ammo. It lacks enough velocity to expand hollow points. Might as well take the increased penetration with ball/flat point ammo.
@@johnelder4273true but at the end of the we are still humans and in a self defense situation multiple shots are usually fired and and i think body shots should be more than enough
Check out Very 1st Review of 9-shot .22lr/.22Magnum Diamondback Sidekick DA/SA Revolver w Magnums here th-cam.com/video/w1ES6iTKDYk/w-d-xo.html w/ Gold Dots or Critical Defense it would be no joke and good option for Disabled or Elderly perhaps
The fact that you add the fiber board with the meat and denim definitely gives your channel the most accurate representation of what ammo will do in real shootings. Great job!
Shot about 300 rounds from 351c, no malfunction and or misfire. Tip: never use 30 gr in aluminum revolver with alum. cylinder. Hot gasses chipping cylinder and frame and it be junk soon.
I have to say i was impressed with the 22 mag.. I picked up one of them rough riders in 22lr- 22 mag. Quick swap of cylinder.. And don't think I've ever had a miss fire with it shooting mini mag's
Mines always been just fine too brother and not only that, I’d damn sure carry a 22mag because I do, the PMR30 is a great pistol and it punches way harder than I thought it would ✌️🇺🇸
Bologna & gel testing was very interesting. It seemed to show the 22mag would actually work for self defense. Up until now, I would've never even considered using it for that. Thanks for the awesome comparison!
Something to consider that Sam missed, the mass of the 380 will break bones and pass through whereas the 22 mag is gonna catch and bounce around instead your organs. I'm actually the most commonly overlooked self defense round that's gonna stop a threat is the 22 mag. One shot and you can damage the liver, lungs, heart, all the way down to the groin depending on where the bullet bounces from and to.
I've only watched two videos...But I like your testing protocol and your testing medium! I have subscribed! Thank you for making the video and posting it for us!
I watched this because I have both calibers, a 380 Bersa and a 22 Savage rifle. People really under estimate the power of small caliber weapons. The 22 has almost no kick, and I can shoot 100 rounds (which is a lot) through it with no fatigue. I am not surprised the 22 pistol has more penetrating power and velocity. At 200 yards a rifle will kill a full grown hog.
The clear winner is the 380 ACP. The 22 magnum would have to nearly double the speed to rival it and need to over double the speed to be equal to it. That being said either will work if it's all you've got. I recommend the 250 dollar, RIA 38 special double action. Reliable quality, concealable, and adequate they remind me of Taurus, inexpensive reliability
Paul Harrell did a comparison in 22wmr with the NNA with a 1 and 7/8 inch barrel. About 5 years ago. The ave velocity was with CCI Maximag 40grain he got an ave of 910 fps.
After watching Paul Harrell, ShootingTheBull 410, and Lucky Gunner 22WMR test I didn't quit carrying the NAA 22 mag I just changed to Gold Dot ammo. I figure the NAA in your pocket is better than the Glock 19 in the car. For hot 100 degree summer carry a minimally effective carry option is better than no carry option.
That golddot load he used is whats in my NAA Pug. It chronos around 900 fps usually. I have dispatched many predators with it with one shot stops including a 100lb. Plus dog. It makes a great back up gun.
This has been one of the better test videos on TH-cam I like how you use some sort of meat bologna and a piece of plywood to make believe you're shooting through ribs then the ballistic gel to see what it does after all that good video
Canadian here, I got mine for $250 sticker price, paid a little in shipping etc. (on sale as the handgun freeze approached) I had light strike issues, but the design is dead simple so I just pulled the handle apart and shimmed the hammer spring myself. Only cost me five minutes and a block of rubber floormat.
I’m a big consumer of these comparison/test videos. This is the first of yours I’ve watched-enjoyed it very much…very informative and very “watchable.” (All the things my channel is NOT yet!)
I do like the Jug-or-Not, but the water jugs were killing me. I could max out at 2 videos filmed in a trip as dragging 20 gallons of water down there was hard. Now I have 3 gel blocks and will get more, they allow me to film as much as my cameras can hold. Makes it easier to keep making videos.
@@GunSam thank you for this comparison. I own both guns (although my HRR has the 6.5” barrel) and haven’t had a ton of time with either due to ammo shortages. I’m competent with my other pistols and wondered which of these to use in a pinch. You gave me some good data. I appreciate your hard work. If you bought the ammo recently, I’d be happy to hear if I could get the name of your source so I can get some trigger time. Thanks again.
I also yes. One video I watched showed 22 Magnum was close to 9mm ballistics. But I've seen several new 9mm rounds with well over 400 ftlbs of energy. 22 magnum can be a good defensive.
Interesting. The 22 WMR both penetrated a littke farther and expanded a little better than expected. I was expecting a little over 12" equivalent and maybe .30". 16 in and .37" is quite good. Speer knows what they are doing with Gold Dots. The scenario i see is someone using it as a trail gun for dispatching animals (like a trapper) or small game hunting, and suddenly having to defend themselves. Another scenario might be a responsible, trained teenager at home who is still inexperienced and/or recoil sensitive. We used to recommend 22 mags to elderly customers with lower hand strength and/or recoil tolerance at the gun shop where i worked 26 yrs ago- or a Blackhawk 357 with modest 38 loads. I like my 4.75" Single Six fixed sight a lot, and i would not hesitate to use it for a trail gun. The 380 ammo did surprisingly well also. I was expecting minimal to no expansion and 12" or less, and it did better in both areas. Good to know.
Not sure how you got so many (or any) failure to fire with the 22 Magnum Heritage Rough Rider. That’s the gun I shoot when I want to waste a lot of ammo at targets. Never a single FTF
Weird how your Heritage revolver kept misfiring. All the other channels I've seen people shoot it on have said it's a reliable gun and misfires very little if at all. Looks like you had a faulty one.
I like your style. Pausing for a possible cook off round. The mention of friction vs a gel block. You sir, have a mind that needs much more presence than people shpoting watermelons on youtube. Subscribed!
Interesting test but I would of preferred if you used ammo from the same manufacturer. Maybe Hornady Critical Defense as they make it for both .380 and .22 Mag.
Shouldn't have compared 2 different barrel lengths. Longer barrel handicaped the 380 vs revolver! Need a 22M Glock vs 380 Glock🧐 Best pentration😬 simulation's I've scene!🎯👍
The only problem I have with this test is the barrel length on the guns. I wonder what the results would be if both guns were revolvers which would put both guns on equal footing.
Looks like an ammo issue not a gun issue. I have owned two heritage pistols and as long as I feed it federal premium or CCI I never have light primer strikes
I have own my HRR for 30yrs and never had a misfire in it I use cci stinger in the lr but I carry my mag with hollow points daily it's a 6.5" barrel love this gun and pretty damn accurate to I believe he had a very dirty gun that needed cleaning don't believe he cleaned it up in awhile keeping regular maintenance on any gun is the key to it working efficiently and effectively it doesn't matter the choice of weapon one carries it all about what your comfortable with to each their own liking safety always first have a good day
I have had a Ruger Single Six with a 6.5 inch barrel for more than 40 years. I concealed carry in an IWB holster or a shoulder holster. These days I only use it with the 22 Magnum cylinder. Failure to fire is extremely rare, regardless of ammo brand or type. I currently carry with Hornady Critical Defense, and practice with various kinds of CCI. I prefer to use the CCI TMJ, but if the local store doesn’t have it on hand, I buy whatever type of CCI 22 WMR they do have in stock.
I’m always impressed by your videos! Even more now that you are using gelatin instead of water jugs for an even more accurate measure of the firearms ability. But I do find it inaccurate to compare a rounds performance when one is 2.5 inches and the other is 5 inches. To be fair to both you should have used one of the new Ruger snub nose 22 magnum revolvers. Then both guns would be what would be practically carried for self defense. Don’t get me wrong I happen to love and have carried both. I actually have to qualify twice a year with both out to 25 Yds. in order to be allowed to carry them.
I've had the most problem with misfires with the Winchester white box in my Rough Riders. I choose to buy Federal or other name brands for it and don't have any problem with misfires. I did notice the 380 rocks the steel harder than the 22. My 380 fits my pocket better.
There is absolutely no way 22mag can compare to 380….380 has a variety of high power ammo from underwood ,federal and Buffalo boar just to name a few….people fail to realize ammo has come a very long way in the last 15yrs or so….but not quite in 22,22lr,22mag,25auto or 32…..use underwood 68gr as a comparison and a longer 380 barrel, then this test would be fair
If you haven't done so already, you need to shim the bottom of hammer spring on the RR with a piece of credit card plastic. It will eliminate those failure to fire.
How many years have you been shooting? How many rounds through the gun? I like heritage firearms. But I don't think the gun is the cause of most misfires its the ammo.
I carry a S&W351PD 22MAG as a BUG and I'm quite comfortable with that as a BUG or back up to BUG revolver. I carry 380 Kahr CT380 on occasion and also happy with it.
Thanks. I think i'm still in the leg work stage lol. Too many have abandoned that to sit and talk, about guns, half of the time. Even people talking about a guy who was talking about a guy, who was talking about Kentucky Ballistics.
@@GunSam 😂😂😂. Yes. I've seen no fewer than 5 vids on KY ballistics. Interesting enough, you're one of the few I'd be interested in hearing an opinion / take on the situ. I see nothing wrong with the RN50. Thousands and thousands of ball rounds, etc, have been run through them. It's fairly well know slap rounds with a brake is a no no. It's quite unfortunate. I'm looking forward to Mark Serbu doing analysis on the gun, powder, and brass, etc, if any of that was recovered.
@@joshuagibson2520 I would never do a video on his event, but I can share my thoughts here. Basically, I have mixed feelings. At the end of the day I am glad he's alive, no doubt, however what I think of his channel personally in general has a lot to do with his event. His videos always start with " WHAT'S UP EVERYBODY!", which is a greeting that kids channels usually use, and interestingly enough my son is 8 and has no interest in guns, yet I caught him watching Kentucky Ballistics. And of course my son found him, because videos like shooting Stretch Armstrong and RC cars is going to put KB into an algorithm for younger viewers. So what my overview is, is that Scott knew (much like I do with my pellet gun videos) that younger viewers will watch more than old guys as long as it's "crazy" content. So we all can see that Kentucky Ballistics went from a legitimate gun channel, to a crazy 'wild stuff happening' kids channel, sort of mixing reality with video game nonsense, all the while using his LE background to obtain fully automatic weapons to make these crazy videos. Ultimately I think Scott is, or was at a point where channel growth and crazy content took over common sense, and doing the craziest stuff to go overboard with growth for a buck, well I think that just got the better of him. I mean, I am not judging the situation as who wouldn't want to succeed in life, but I think he pushed it too far. Kids enjoy his videos, but he also sets a bad example as some kid might see one of his videos, grab his dad's rifle and head out and do who knows what- trying to imitate Scott. As far as the gun that exploded, I have no knowledge on that part to make a comment, but in general like I was saying about kids imitating Scott, showing any firearm shoot any steel is not smart unless it's truly a legit ballistic experiment like car doors and whatnot. No one would be shooting fire hydrants with any guns ever, or safes, or punching bags or whatever other nonsense he's showing these kids because they might take dad's .22 and stick the muzzle up to metal, or some stupid variation of Scott's stupid "experiments". Long story short, there is way too much exciting crazy content, with zero warnings given. At least with channels like TAOFLEDERMAUS or similar, there is caution taken and a lot of verbal warnings about what they did or didn't do or what could happen. That's my take on it.
@@GunSam definitely targeted to kids, no doubt. I appreciate your view and sharing it. Made me think about a lot of aspects of the situ I honestly hadn't thought about. Take care brother!
Scott does a different kind of gun show, I like both him and this one. I really not a fan of hitchcock 45. He talks to much and says nothing interesting or of value.
Interesting video, particularly since I've acquired a Beretta 85 as my EDC with the Standard manufacturing Thunderstruck and NAA Antivenom As backup and emergency backup respectively. Good to have my Judgment vindicated.
I thought of an idea you could use ??? if you got 2 squares of inner tube rubber and rubber glued the edges and clamped it with a tyre valve in one corner with an air pressure indicator attached to that. you'll see how much air is displaced with the expansion of the bullet . if it's a hollow point then you'll have higher levels compared to a pointier round that will just pass through. but maybe good idea can be made longer thinner etc etc I hope you see my vision. I mean it should be in front of balistic gek
Lol, that Winchester white box 380 performs a lot better then many more costly 380 loads that I’ve seen you and others test. Thanks for another good test, even more interesting than most of the standard ones.
Win white box and rem green and white box are the cheap alternative to premium rounds. My taurus g3c has win 147 grain whitebox hollowpoints and my .357 magnums are loaded with rem green and white 125 grain soft nose hp. I trust both.
I recently picked up some armscor 22 mag 40 HP's. When I opened the box I was pleasantly surprised to find the casing was nickel plated and the projectiles were semi jacketed hollow point's. Might be worth trying out I don't have the resources you have at your disposal and with most of the small game seasons wrapping up around me I really don't know if they will expand. They did okay in water I'll have to pick up some bologna and old jeans.
Thanks for using the bologna pack. I think in these small calibers you need to have bone simulation. The .22 mag would work in a pinch, but I'm not going to give up my .38 snub for one. The .380 can have trouble meeting hollow point expansion threshold out of a short barrel so it's nice to see that it can work decently. The Winchester white box round is really a good bargain. I like the 180 grain in .40 caliber. Hard to beat.
Yeah, .38 Special is really in my mind the first "real" handgun cartridge. People scoff, but I will ask them what police department ever carried a .380, and how many carried .38 Special.
Thanks. Yeah, I been really thinking about it all lately. Like if I mixed meat and bones into a paste, well it's not gonna affect the bullet the same way as formed bones. I am really trying to get close to what would happen to a bullet in a body. I should start to mention my simulation is rib only, as if I did one shot bologna pack, one shot plain gel, I would get what Paul Harrel gets and also what hospitals pull out...some expanded, some not.
I missed this video when it was new but good job on the test. Impressive for the 22 Magnum for sure but I’m really impressed with the 380 performance just as much. My wife carries an LCP 2 and for the size and weight they are hard to beat. And at least in this test decent performance.
Just a thought. Try waiting a couple seconds on the chronograph so it has time to properly register the bullet velocity. Sometimes they get finicky and need a couple seconds to reset between shots. Great video! Love the content you are putting out. 🤠🤩
Thanks. I don't have one anymore, but the thing is I never would have thought it would do well anyways. Like, .22 Mag is like .22 LR when the mag is in a 1" barrel and the LR is in a 4" barrel.
@@GunSam 2 inch 22mag is faster than a 380 acp (short barrel) my NAA has been more reliable than any 380 pistol I've owned.. I've owned maybe 20 of them throughout the years. I assume it's because they were ALWAYS new models that just hit the market or I didn't put 500 rounds through them to break them in
Hey Sam, save the burnt, denim frayed, and fiber board sharded, gel chunks you have to debride when doing the post-mortems on the gel blocks before resetting them. You can also just buy a pound or two of overrun chunks from CB for just a few dollars from their website. Anyway, set aside and MELT / set those parts in a small SS sauce pan stove top and make yourslef a reusable "bologna pack analog" out of the gel.
The little .22 is an amazing little round. Even the 'shorts' have great small predator stopping power. Heard many stories that, it bounced off a target (human), don't believe it. More peeps have passed from a 22 shot than any other round. ER docs and nurses confirm that. Look it up. Penetration confirms this as Gun Sam shows you point blank. Would not rely on single action for self defense as the NAA except for snakes. Double action semi auto is a hunter with deer killing quality, although not an acceptable round for most but the poor that can't afford bigger guns and ammo. Still one round placed right, will kill. Avid follower of 'Gun Sam' and enjoy his approach. For a couple of years now I've been testing various ammunition recoils and aim points. I appreciate what you do Sam. Keep it up and I'll keep watching ya! Best wishes young man!
I kinda was thinking the 380 would outperform the mag just for the fact that down here in Florida we can't hunt any white-tailed deer with anything that uses rimfirred cartridges which would most likely be 17hmr and the 22 series ammo but we can hunt with any centerfired round ; even smaller rounds like 25 acp , 32 acp , 380 , etc etc . Although if we are hunting from the pocket gun rounds we would be using an hand gun which hunting with handguns requires an CCW permit . Which I need to look into how effective these rounds are at further distance than normally shot .
As always a good and interesting video. Also nice 25 yard shooting with that little LCP. I have a little Taurus .380 which is not fun to shoot. Take care.
Doing Research for Upcoming New Revo. Ur velocity seemed low compared to Paul Harrel and Lucky Gunner I believe because Rough Rider Tolerances we bit loose. Anyway's a 3" or longer .22 mag w gold dots seems like a very viable SD option for the Elderly and Disabled. Agree? Not bad recoil at all, but a loud bark w good penetration and expansion.
I have a Taurus Spectrum .380. With various hardball ammo I would get a couple of Failure to Fire- the Spectrum has "2nd strike" ability, and they would go off with a second trigger pull. With 3 different HP rounds, NO failures of any kind and the group sizes were about HALF of what the hardball ammo was! It really likes the HP rounds!
Good shooting man.I have the same LCP and while mine isn't overly finicky regarding ammo I'm not a very good shot with it,I'd be happy hitting the plate even once at 25yds lol. Good to know that trading in a .22mag LCR for a S&W 637 was the right choice.
That Rough Rider seems like a lemon. Mine is pretty early production and it has worked flawlessly with no parts needing tweaked or replaced. Whenever mine gets a misfire it is always the ammo.
In a good pistol the 22mag will do if that’s what you have. Check the cylinder alignment it’s probably off a little on two chambers. This is early for me.
I have that same model revolver and do not have the miss fires in 22lr or 22 magnum. I think your hammer spring may be weak or the tip of the firing pin is damaged.
When you get a chance, try out the Taurus new 8 shot round .22 mag. For me it's a great shooter and groupings are at 3.5inches for me at 25 yards. Good Luck.
Have not watched video yet, very curious. My daughter's 2 carries are. PMR-30 40Grain CCI and Bersa thunder. 380. 95grain Jhp. Her choice. She used PMR-30 to qualify in Tennessee for carry license 3 ago. Thanks . Back to video
.380 is one of those cartridges that doesn't make sense. It's energy isn't great, but it's got the perfect mass and velocity to perform as if it's a 9mm or .38 Special.
Beautiful chunk of property you have. Meanwhile, I live in a swamp up north. An AWESOME comparison between these two. Just a useful side note. I've shot different makes of 22 mag through my NAA mini revolver. the best performer was the Winchester Varmint HV. Out of this little 1 inch barrel it clocked an average of 1,296fps!! This out performed all the CCI. So if you find a box or two, GET IT!
I don't have that ammo, but I have the CCI Maxi Max 30 gr TNT. I think in my unboxing of the Rough Rider, that was the ammo I ran through it, had one read of 1,500 FPS.

@@scottphipps3577
I live in Texas and carry a 4 inch Ruger Sp101 OWB in jeans and a Tshirt over it. It isn't hard if you have a good belt and a good holster.
@@GunSam Sam I am thinking of getting the Henry Frontier 24 .22 MAG with threaded barrel. What do you think of the round through a rifle?
I have a 4.75" RR in 22lr/22wmr and love it. Never had any issues so far, kids love shooting it because it has absolutely no recoil. Keep up the videos, they are informative.
Love the videos bro, people underestimate these small calibers and I think it's foolish.
Some people will say a 380 acp is underpowered. I’ve carried my PPK for years and I have total confidence with premium defensive loads that it’ll stop a threat. It’s all about shot placement, and confidence in what you carry.
Training goes a long way. Practice, practice, practice.
Great video. Would love to see it repeated with 2” LCR and/or NAA Pug
Those Gold Dots are really good. They will expand in a 2" barrel and it's what I carry in my J-frames.
No joke, you have one of the best microphones on TH-cam
I appreciate ur hard work this was something that I found entertaining and informative
I have to say i was impressed with the 22 mag.. I picked up one of them rough riders in 22lr- 22 mag. Quick swap of cylinder.. And don't think I've ever had a miss fire with it shooting mini mag's
Mines always been just fine too brother and not only that, I’d damn sure carry a 22mag because I do, the PMR30 is a great pistol and it punches way harder than I thought it would ✌️🇺🇸
Great idea using the baloney pack. I always thought meat targets are more realistic than gel blocks. I love the stands that you have also.
Bologna & gel testing was very interesting. It seemed to show the 22mag would actually work for self defense. Up until now, I would've never even considered using it for that. Thanks for the awesome comparison!
Thanks for watching!
22 mag is the most underrated caliber out that. Just bought the walther wmp and it is awesome.
I would not hesitate to use 22mag for self defense. Great wound characteristics. Way more powerful than most think!
This guy makes the best videos on TH-cam. Keep up the good work
I've only watched two videos...But I like your testing protocol and your testing medium!
Like one of the other posters, I too, would have liked to have seen the test run with the NAA in 22mag.
Paul Harrell did a comparison in 22wmr with the NNA with a 1 and 7/8 inch barrel. About 5 years ago. The ave velocity was with CCI Maximag 40grain he got an ave of 910 fps.
@@davidsomerset8411 Interesting! I'll check it out, thanks!
PMR-30 30+1 (+30) Gold Dot
61 rounds of justice. 😎
I have a roughrider and I've never had a missfire and I have run the cheapest crap known to man through it,.22lr or .22 mag. Best $139 I ever spent.
I love the rough rider. In CA it costs $350 after taxes and fees 😢
Canadian here, I got mine for $250 sticker price, paid a little in shipping etc. (on sale as the handgun freeze approached)
I had light strike issues, but the design is dead simple so I just pulled the handle apart and shimmed the hammer spring myself. Only cost me five minutes and a block of rubber floormat.
“Hunny, the kids are getting hungry-did you see that baloney I had in the fridge?”
Awesome video and thank you, I enjoy the way you do your videos.
I’m a big consumer of these comparison/test videos. This is the first of yours I’ve watched-enjoyed it very much…very informative and very “watchable.” (All the things my channel is NOT yet!)
Jug or not still blows away the gel, it defines you as a channel and gives it your own lil signature
@@GunSam I can definitely understand the pain for sure but it definitely added something especially shooting that close with the splash back
@@GunSam Meh I'm good with with the gel blocks, the bologna has to stay though lol.
22 magnum can be a good defensive.
.22 Mag would have to be in a rifle to get near 9mm energy.
I got 9mm off the shelf that gets 500 ft lbs but 400 is no joke considering most 9mm is in the mid 300s
good video sam, thanks for the hard work bringing us this info.
I have never had a misfire w my 6.5 inch Heritage revolver 😳. I only use CCI ammo.
Interesting 22mag performance.
22_TCM sounds like a good idea too.
In terms of energy, the TCM is comparable to or just under 9mm.

Weird how your Heritage revolver kept misfiring. All the other channels I've seen people shoot it on have said it's a reliable gun and misfires very little if at all. Looks like you had a faulty one.

I was thinking maybe that barkeep would accept my mag cylinder?
@@GunSam it will indeed!
Not many .380 revolvers floating around.
Living in a beach town and watching your vids is like a trip to fantasyland, especially your back yard. Thanks for another fun vid.
I'm impressed that both my pistols one 7 inch one 2 inch. Both will pur a 22mag Vmax through a 4x 4 . I've never had a misfire with either.
Check your cylinder lock pin. If not locked in, you will get all those Misfired.
Whoa. I did not expect that from a 22mag. I think your Heritage needs a new pin. Mine does not have misses like that.
That Heritage needs to go back to the factory. I have 3 of these in different configurations and have never had a misfire in LR or mag!
Most likely the ammo, not the gun
I've had the most problem with misfires with the Winchester white box in my Rough Riders. I choose to buy Federal or other name brands for it and don't have any problem with misfires. I did notice the 380 rocks the steel harder than the 22. My 380 fits my pocket better.
Great shooting with the LCP @ 25yds! Outta the same barrel length it's the 380 all day long.
After my new g43 malfunctioning I finally caught on and bought a j frame. Paired with a gen 3 g19 I think I finally settled on the right combo.
(GASP!!) How dare you blaspheme the most high name of gaston glock by saying a glock malfunctioned!!! 🤣🤣
If you haven't done so already, you need to shim the bottom of hammer spring on the RR with a piece of credit card plastic. It will eliminate those failure to fire.
I have a heritage rough rider and I've never had any ammo misfire
How many years have you been shooting?
How many rounds through the gun?
I like heritage firearms. But I don't think the gun is the cause of most misfires its the ammo.
Finally a use for bologna.
I carry a S&W351PD 22MAG as a BUG and I'm quite comfortable with that as a BUG or back up to BUG revolver. I carry 380 Kahr CT380 on occasion and also happy with it.
The length of the barrel makes all the difference.
I'm gonna run out and buy one of those high quality Heritage SSA - 😆

You just found the new FBI round. Also like the way you handle a possible hang fire. A lot of these youtubers don't believe it can happen.

Oh, Wow! Someone bought a Thunderstruck? How does it run?
@@mrmann44 about like you'd expect. No reliability issues, but I wouldn't use it past 10 yards, in good Light.
Another Gr8 video n surprised as well on that 22mag doing about the same as 380acp.
I would love to see a comparison test of the 17HMR, Taurus revolver against these.. Thumbs up as usual Sam!
Same with the Aguila. Very good rimfire ammo in LR and magnum

Here in Brazil, I watched you video. @@GunSam
Curious if that gold dot case is made out of some oddly hard brass or something. Every heritage RR I've seen and shot works perfectly
Ballistics gel is the average density of the human body, but not the differing layers of density. Hence why your test is valid.
Excellent videos there Sam.
Thank you.
I missed this video when it was new but good job on the test. Impressive for the 22 Magnum for sure but I’m really impressed with the 380 performance just as much. My wife carries an LCP 2 and for the size and weight they are hard to beat. And at least in this test decent performance.
Thanks. I have a lot more rim fire content coming.
Both calibers are underrated. I carry .380 as EDC....
Just a thought. Try waiting a couple seconds on the chronograph so it has time to properly register the bullet velocity. Sometimes they get finicky and need a couple seconds to reset between shots. Great video! Love the content you are putting out. 🤠🤩
Good video but disappointed you did not use a short barreled 22mag like a NAA mini
Very much enjoy your videos
good review, wish you would had shown the wound channel from above
I know from about 40 feet, the .22 Mag. Will go through a metal barrel. I think that would work for Defense.
Take care.
Thank you. Yeah, .380's like that have a lot of recoil, not more than .38 but the grips are always slim so it intensifies the recoil in one spot.
@@GunSam For sure, plus I kept hitting the mag release and dropping it. Not good for carry! Thanks again.
Doing Research for Upcoming New Revo. Ur velocity seemed low compared to Paul Harrel and Lucky Gunner I believe because Rough Rider Tolerances we bit loose. Nice shootin with the .380 at 25 yds!

Thanks!
That Rough Rider seems like a lemon. Mine is pretty early production and it has worked flawlessly with no parts needing tweaked or replaced. Whenever mine gets a misfire it is always the ammo.
I think the 22mag would be better than the 380acp for a back up carry very interesting thanks for the video 👍 keep them coming 👍
In a good pistol the 22mag will do if that’s what you have. Check the cylinder alignment it’s probably off a little on two chambers. This is early for me.
I have that same model revolver and do not have the miss fires in 22lr or 22 magnum. I think your hammer spring may be weak or the tip of the firing pin is damaged.
bigger holes make a HUGE difference
When you get a chance, try out the Taurus new 8 shot round .22 mag. For me it's a great shooter and groupings are at 3.5inches for me at 25 yards. Good Luck.

.380 is one of those cartridges that doesn't make sense.
