    Baal Red, Magmadroth flame, and Bad Moon yellow look like interesting tools. They don´t provide the instant shading as other contrasts but have enough shading to let you imagine easily where you can apply further shadows and highlights, more than with a base paint. Probably an instant staple in any paint set for people who like to apply their own contrast.

    Of the various 'got the early access' reviews, this is probably the most detailed I've seen in terms of "here's what this colour would work well for" and the comparison to the existing contrast range. Given the closeness of karandras and striking scorpion to warp lightning (also others, but really obvious in the greens), I suspect that part of the longer term plan will be to market groups of contrast paints as 'triads' (which Reaper has been doing for years and Army Painter started doing with their Air range)

  • @PB-tr5ze

    • @PB-tr5ze
      @PB-tr5ze 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tombrand236 lol my poor alphas have gone through some rough times with their color scheme... it started with that shade technique that needed 7 to 8 layers of shade... I had quite literally just finished all my terminators when contrast came out and I saw I could get a similar effect with one layer of contrast.
      So long story short, my current army has a mishmash of models painted with regular paint, layered shade, contrast paints and color change paints all mixed together... mostly because they all look good, I can't decide what I like more and I figure the alpha legion is about confusion so if I am confused about the color scheme of my own army, my opponents must be dumbfounded. Lol

    Its fun to hear you say you dont like white primers. I used to only prime black, but when i tried white primer for Speed paints/Contrast paints. I painted on it normally with paint as i would with a black primer, just to try it out. and i LOVE white primer way more now that black. Sure its harder to cover everything since the white shrine through. But damn, colours POP on white compared to black.

Vallejo Game Color Smokey Ink (72.068) for example will give you pretty much the exact same result as Garaghak's Sewer, and AK Interactive carries inks that are comparable to Black Legion and Ratling Grime, for half the price.

    Just came from watching Ninjon's video, he pretty much put away the Pylar Glacier and said he'd likely never use it, come here and Pete is 'Pylar is probably my favourite out of the new range' :P
    Also some of these seem definitely much more like they originally advertised contrast paint, I kinda wish they labeled the new one as contrast 2.0 or something and maybe the Baal and those 1 coat that have no well contrast, just flat coat as 'contrast base' or something, also thanks for the detailed review, specially showing similar existing ones next to it. top notch video.

    • @PeteTheWargamer
      @PeteTheWargamer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, yeh I did see that too. I think if you look at Pylar Glacier as a contrast paint in the same category as Baal Red it's easy to dismiss it as being ineffective. But I think if you treat it as more of an effects paint or something that should be used in conjunction with other paints, then it can be incredibly useful.

    A couple of those look less "contrasty" and more just like regular paints!
    Do they flow like contrast paints still? I use two coats of Black Templar for stuff like marines' joints, Legion stormtrooper bodygloves, etc. and it comes out looking a lot like the Black Legion demo here, if it flows similarly I think I'll be making the switch as soon as possible!

    7:01 not to mention also really good for replacing Tesseract glow on Necron weapons!

      Maybe I did it wrong but Tesseract was awful for me, I hated how it came out.

    I dunno if I'm alone in this or not, but the Briar Queen Chill looks amazing to me. The translucence is useful for washes, and the frosted effect it gives when painted over white looks pretty great. You could add some subtle greens and deeper blues to that and make a pretty convincing thick ice effect.

    "It's more of a blueish-grey than greyish blue..."
    It's that whole Ocean Grey/Military Grey arguement again, huh. 😏
    Great review Pete, thanks for taking the time. You gonna be running down the new shades too?

    I'm impressed that GW understood something extremely simple that might make this new range a big hit. Not every painter wants all these paints to be super crazy contrasted. For some paints, like that Orange and the Yellows, it's really almost enough to just give us a very well-covering version of this paint, because not everyone wants to sit there and paint six layers of bright yellow to get a .. well .. bright yellow armor or something. They took the concept of the CONTRAST aspect and thought one step further and really went into the "for the lazy painter" kind of market, which imho is a good idea, because it gets more people more interested in painting.

    As someone who started doing very bright Iyanden, it looks like bad moon yellow is my new go-to basecoat, rather than approximately 58 layers of flash gitz

    I don't like telling tales, but amma gonna. Squidmar can't see much use for the Pylar glacier but then boom! you knock out an amazing looking ice effect. Based off of Squidy's vid I was going to give it a miss but now I can't wait to try it.

    Really helpful video thanks! reckon you could do one of the colours over a silver/metallic base coat? The effects can be really good

    I'm looking to use Mantis Warrior, Karandras or Striking Scorpions green for the trim and boltes on my Glooming Lords. I want a glowing radioactive feel, what would be the best way to achieve this? The models are based with leadbelcher and the armor is done with Black Templars black for a metallic effect (though in retrospect Stormhost Silver might have given a better result). Would I need to do a base layer of White/Wraithbone before using one of them (most likely Sriking Scropions)? Or do you think it would be bright enough to contrast the black while leaving the Leadbelcher for the metallic feel? Maybe I should do a base layer of Stormhost Silver first?
