      Boston Red Sox probably should've won the WS that year, in retrospect all things considered. Most Red Sox fans have told me this from a practical, honest perspective analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of both Mets and Red Sox squads in 1986. 1986 was not some fluke year either, mind up you, that squad of Evans, Jim Rice, Wade Boggs, young Roger Clemens, Dave Henderson would make two more ALCS appearances over the next 4 seasons-in 1988 and 1990. 1986 is a season where Red Sox really led a golden opportunity get away from them, for a long time Red Sox were very similar to the Celtics in that they made playoffs consistently and could draft, develop great players but lacked that killer instinct Celtics had to finish off opponents. Long before New Orleans got another NBA team in the Hornets and now the Pelicans, the Celtics were my favorite NBA team because they personified winning at it's best, most organized sort of way.

  • @TheLocalLt

    This was a huge win for the Patriots, the Raiders had tortured them in the years before this, including stealing Jim Plunkett from NE and winning a Super Bowl with him in LA. The black hole was at the time the most intimidating road game in the league at the time (think of raiders fans now, except that the team is really good and has won a bunch of Super Bowls and moved to LA). And then the Pats had maybe an even bigger upset the next week as they beat Dan Marino and Miami (the only team to beat the 85 Bears) to deny America a potential classic Super Bowl matchup. Instead the Pats got a token super bowl appearance and the bears got to drag them around (literally - see the vid of Craig James’ fumble) the field for 3 hours and make everyone immediately declare them the greatest defense ever.

      Not really. The Coliseum in the mid 80's was actually quite tame compared to how it would get in the late 80's and 90's when the Raiders became the colors of choice for a lot of gang beyond the obvious bloods and crips. But yeah, we really missed a show with Marino on a fast track getting a chance to prove that Week 13 Monday Night game wasn't a fluke. I think Chicago still wins, but it's much much much more entertaining.

    My mom and her family are from Southern Massachusetts. They're all diehard Boston/NE fans (Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins, Celtics, Boston College). I remember my uncle telling me how great this 85 season was for fans of a team that had floundered for most of it's history. This win was cathartic for them, the win in the AFC Championship was even more so because it was against the Dolphins.
    He also told me how crushing the clobbering in the Super Bowl they got from the Bears was.

If Madden would've started Ken Stabler earlier in his career instead of sticking with Lamonica for so long they wouldve won a Super Bowl before the 76 season. Lamonica always choked in the biggest games. George Blanda was awesome but he was so old by the early 70's that Stabler should've been at least 2nd string then. Watching this because I wanted to see what got the '85 Patriots to Super Bowl 20. Like one of the Bears said that year, "whatever got the Patriots to the Superbowl we didn't see it that day." Hard to believe this was the same team that took a pounding by the Bears.

      Mike Singletary said that. What got the Pats to the Super Bowl was turnovers and strong running game. Against the Bears the Pats got an early turnover but couldn't run and therefore they were dead.

    @allengordon41510 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The most ineffective combination of Raiders WRs (dokie Williams and Jessie Hester) in their history catching passes from one of the most inept QBs (Marc Wilson). Wilson had all the tools, but is confidence was shaken at some point in his career. Then again, Al Davis loved the deep ball, but was NEVER a good evaluator of quarterbacks. Lamonica, Blanda, Gannon, Plunkett, and Jason Campbell were all reclamation projects that thrived after being backups on the roster. Stabler, Al's only good draft pick at QB, was assigned to the Taxi-squad for three seasons before becoming third string and eventually the starter. Al's draft history at this position has been horrible: Larry Lawrence, David Humm, Mike Rae, Rusty Hilger, Bill Joe Hobert, Marques Tuiasosopo, JaMarcus, Andrew Walter, Marc Wilson.Terrelle Pryor, Steve Beurelien, Donald Hollas, Matt McGloin. And the free agent pick-ups... nothing but a constant quest for the next Darryl Lamonica: Duante Culpepper, Jay Schroeder, Jeff George, Kerry Collins, Rick Mirer, Aaron Brooks, Jeff Hostetler, Josh McCown, Bruce Gradkowski, Kyle Bowler, a broken Carson Palmer, Wade Wilson,
    Exemption given to Tom Flores, Todd Marinovich, Vince Evans. And Dan Pastorini, who if not for a broken leg in Game 4 and later a car accident the night before the AFC Wild Card game, would be the Raiders starting QB and Plunkett never leads this team to the Super Bowl in 1980, and perhaps 1983. Al didn't believe in Plunkett could lead the team until the 1980 SB. Marc Wilson's 3 INTs in this game were par for the course.
