I was in high school and it was really a fun run. But no one was beating that Bears team, best defense I ever saw in my 50 years of watching football.

The voice of the Patriots in these highlights was John Carlson of WHDH/WEEI. I actually called him on the phone two times. He was kind enough to talk with me for 45 minutes each time.
Mr. Carlson gave up announcing due to commuting to Minnesota each week from Massachusetts. This was after he lost the Pats job when the team changed radio stations in 1987. I told him “you sound like you miss announcing”, to which Mr. Carlson replied wistfully, “I do.”
I sent John Carlson 2 tapes featuring complete radio broadcasts of two Patriot games he called. He sent me a Christmas card and thanked me for my gesture. He truly enjoyed his broadcast time with New England and radio partner Jon Morris.
I hope the man was enjoyed and appreciated by Patriot fans as I did. John Carlson had a voice from Heaven.

Pat the Patriot had to be the greatest logo in the history of the NFL. I was a young kid in the 70s, and I often looked at NFL items in the Sears Wish Book each year. The Patriots helmet always stood out to me, and I wish they would bring it back using the current color scheme. I also wish they would get rid of the current red stripes on the shoulders, as they are unnecessary and detract from the great blue and silver combo.

Steelers fan here, always liked the Pats 80s helmet. I remember this teams voyage to the super bowl that year. It was an anazing underdog journey, they were never gonna defeat Chicago, but the fact that they got there was a credit to a bunch of tough vets & young talent too….Irving Fryar, Andre Tippett. I remember watching Super Bowl XX live on television. The Chicago Bears thoroughly defeated the New England Patriots in that game. Who would ever have imagined that by 2019, after they had won Super Bowl 53, they would be on par with the Pittsburgh Steelers with six World Championships to their franchise! Bill Belichick would coach on six Super Bowl winning teams eclipsing coach Chuck Noll who led Pittsburgh to four titles! QB Tom Brady would earn SEVEN Super Bowl rings with two different teams surpassing QB Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana, who both won four Super Bowls.

Even though they got crushed, the 85 Pats were still the only team to score on the 85 Bears defense in the postseason…a very tough Giants and a peak Eric Dickerson led Rams both got shutout by the Bears. Scoring anything on that D was an accomplishment.

Let's keep it in perspective. 3 points were scored after Payton fumbled deep in Bears territory and the other 7 was scored in garbage time after the game was completely out of hand against most of the Bears second string defense.

Yeah, Eason was made of glass, both in body and mind. I still remember any time there was pressure, he'd duck and fall. Sometimes, the pressure wasn't even there, but you could see he was scared and still ducked and fell with no defender within three or four yards of him. Great arm, though.

  • @WobblinGoblin1

I remember this team well. The offense was decent, but Eason was far too fragile in body and mind. When he broke down (figuratively and literally), Grogan stepped in and the team actually improved because the team believed in him and you could see it in their demeanor and play. Even though Grogan didn't have the arm Eason did, he had confidence, grit, and leadership qualities, all things missing in Eason.
The real strength of this team was the defense, however. The line was good, the defensive backfield was very good, but the linebackers were exceptional.
This was the best Patriots team outside of the Brady years, even better than 1996. Sadly, the team was limited by Eason.
Oh, and Brian Holloway looked very good as long as he had Hannah next to him. Without Hannah, he was ok at best, perhaps even mediocre.
