  • I wanted to make my dad something cool for Christmas. This is what I came up with. The whole grill was basically made from stuff I had laying around (minus a couple little things).

Nice work but it and your design could have definitely been better. I only say this because I grill A LOT and I also own a machine shop. The things I am talking about would not have cost you any money as you seem to have lots of material laying about. First, there should have been a sealing flange welded onto the door so that when closed there is no obvious gap between the door and the body of the grill. Second, after a couple of cooking sessions that expanded steel charcoal grate will bend and settle to the point where it will probably come off of the brackets so a couple of full cross supports are needed there. Third, where is your air control? In order to control the burn rate of the charcoal and even to get the charcoal lit with your ingenious use of gas grill parts you need to have air flow. Fourth, off of the 2" bung opening you need to put a bit of a smoke stack just to funnel the grill smoke away from the top of the grill. Please don't take these things to be too critical because I don't even know if you have any experience on using, let alone building, a grill so consider this sage advice from someone who has been grilling and smoking for over 35 years.
If you've read this far and I haven't pissed you off to the point where you just stopped reading, I have to say this; Your father should be proud of you, you not only have the skill and ingenuity to make things but you have the heart to use those traits for the benefit of your family members and those kind of gifts are always, always, always, the ones that will be remembered rather than a store bought gift.

Hi, great grill! One question, did you try and how did it work? Should there not be some vents for the fire to get some air? I would imagine an air intake that you could maybe adjust. Try maybe using the existing small holes, one for air in the other for smoke? Cheers

The plug at the top of the barrel is able to come out for air circulation. I designed a door in the bottom but was unable to complete it in the timeframe I had, so it has to be shoveled out. A little inconvenient but it still works.
