Cali, our Golden Retriever, spends time with me at the cabin as I finish the roof, chink the log cabin, install a woodstove and start a flagstone floor under the fireplace and at the entranceway.
Music by David Mitchell of My Outdoor Adventures (www.myoutdoora...)
The weather is crazy - from balmy sunny days to rain and snow. The creek starts to freeze, the leaves are almost all off the trees and the bears are very active, getting closer to the cabin in their search for food before denning for the winter. Moose and deer are regular visitors, passing in the night as close as 10 feet from the log cabin.

Don't apologize for the Self Reflection part of your videos! They are very deep thoughts. It takes a well rounded individual to build a cabin and share his personal life with the rest of us. Kudos to you. This world needs more guys like you.
Thank-you
Who ever first said that the dog is man's best friend, said so much more than he could have possibly realized. They are willing do anything, even die to please us.
God knew that He couldn't give us all a personal angel, so He created dogs. The absolute, unconditional love! ♥
I'm putting my companion of 15 years down this weekend and seeing your young pup dashing around reminded me of the wonderful times Wyatt and I had over the years outdoors...such a well timed video for me. He will be missed and also will remain as an integral part of my motivation right beside you. Thanks Shawn, I am deeply grateful for having been introduced to you through Joe. You're true brother and the King of Self Reliance!
Lawrence Bishop Thanks Lawrence. My condolences- that's a tough thing to do. You'll have a lifetime of memories of Wyatt to reflect back on.
Lawrence Bishop it strikes a chord with me in your tough choice with your wonderful dog. My heart goes out to you buddy. It will always be the memories of joy and the pain of loss. But it was worth it.
Lost my two best friends within one year of each other. I still tear up thinking about them but it almost always breaks into a smile as I remember my times with them. Sorry for your loss and prayers for healing.
I think your channel is just about the best thing on the internet right now. You are leaving a legacy, not just in the woods.
Your a solid dude, it already seems like a home with the stove in it. I bought a school bus and converted it into a home, I'm 25 and I'm learning a lot from u. Mostly wood work and also self reflections are really intelligent. I get smarter every time I watch ur vids
anyone else find the act of watching someone build something from nature while surrounded by nature incredibly calming and satisfying? no talking, no music, just the sounds of working w ones hands and the sounds of nature
I have written comments during this series, sometimes you reply, sometimes not. Regardless, It's important that you realize how much of an inspiration you are. Not only to me but most likely many of the people subscribed to your channel and or watching your videos. You put many things in a different light that many of us have not had the opportunity to either hear or be a part of. For this I am grateful. Thank you yet again for sharing your wisdom and another wonderful video!
Maplehouse Knives and Bushcraft Trust me, I read them every time and it means a lot to me. Thank you so much for joining me on this journey
I agree!
Maplehouse Knives and Bushcraft, wonderful words best describes what you have said here, ALL are true!
Was anyone else as excited as me when he lit the fire? It was like my favorite team just scored a touchdown. YES!!!
Totally agree! I was super excited for the chinking and then the stove, and the competing the roof! Water tight is always a good feeling, then heat.
Oh goodness, I was. Started crying, silly I know. His heart and soul is in this cabin, but the fire is like the heartbeat.
Yes I was super excited!
Also I was super excited to see smoke coming from the chimney, its like there's finally a little life in the cabin, its one of the most important parts
I am 23, I am seriously considering buying a small piece of land and building a simple shelter. Your videos are so inspirational and helpful. Especially the segments where you talk about your life. Thank You.
Son of a Bear Bushcraft I'm 15 and saving up for when I turn 18 to buy a piece of land so of course I would advise you to land is the best thing to invest in
Son of a Bear Bushcraft Go for it you will not regret it! Good luck!
Joshua lund You are wise beyond your years!
All the best bro! Working for it too...good luck.
I'm 25 and own 5 acres, it was one of the greatest decisions of my life. Luckily when I bought the land the town was still unincorporated, unfortunately the laws changed because it's now incorporated so I can't build without permits anymore.
Man, you eat better over a fire in the woods than I do at my house. Cabin is looking great sir! Best channel on TH-cam hands down.
I know right? I would cut a brother over that ham and cheese melt LOL
Man, I'm watching this Friday Morning about an hour yet to go till lunch time, and those Ham Sammiches looked SO stinkin' good! I'm dying here! LOL
Truly on point, sometimes we don’t ask because of the fear of getting rejected, if the answer is no just be happy that you had the courage to ask.
We need 3 million more men like you in this world. A man's man for sure. No skinny jean wearing boys who can't even change tires.
blessedisshegroup i wear skinny amd i jeans and I do something similar like this cute house
Amen to real men! I too made a move to let my guy know I was interested. Shy, yes! Hard working, builder, hunter, all around outdoorsman. 38 years ago today was our first date! Now married 37 years in December. Son 33, & daughter 30 .We also want to build a cabin in Alaska. Thanks for the post, & sharing!! All the Best!
blessedisshegroup my business partner is a skinny jeans wearing kid of 25 who served 5 years in the Corp. He's hard working and he is building his future. Many of these kids are looking for direction. They are not the failures it is the men of my generation who walked out on many of these young men when they were kids
Traditional, real men are a dwindling asset! We need them more than ever!
My English Springer Spaniels used to love to “help” me do jobs around the house, made doing them so much more enjoyable. Cheers from the 🇬🇧.
My shyness holds me back, I don’t know if I’ll ever get over it, but I hope I do. I know I’m missing out on so much because of it, but it’s so tough.
I love that you have built your cabin from mostly resources on your land. You use very basic tools: saw, axe, square, level, tape measure, hammer, nails, hand drill, pencil and the slide for hauling things. You have plans in your head and have researched how to do things and planned what you wanted done and did it. I love watching your videos. The beauty of your land is amazing! Thanks for posting these videos.
I was nervous my whole day today and then I stumbled upon this video, and the knot in my stomach was gone. You're doing a hell of a great job, not just by helping yourself to live a dream life, but to us too whose lives you're touching with this god's speed energy. Thanks, man.
I can't describe the feeling of joy I experienced when you first lit that fire in the stove and watched the smoke coming from the chimney. I'm not sure why I'm so invested in your experience, but I certainly am. Cooking that first meal on the stove top must have felt like a significant benchmark achieved. Wonderful story about your shyness at asking your future wife out. And the hand wave from inside the privy? Classic! Fridays have become my day to look forward to, awaiting your next installment.
Thanks again for sharing, Shawn.
Steve
The relatable-ness of your self reflections went to the next level in this one. Super cool to watch you work, too.
This video is just over a year old. LOOK AT ALL of your progress! You were installing that beautiful wood stove here. And I love your story about meeting your wife.
I love this series and you Self Reflections.
I look forward to your videos.
Its the watching a real man around my age.
Remind me of the way my father was.
And how he taught us girls and his only son to be able to survive.
Your wife must truly feel blessed to have you around.
Blessings!
You are doing a beautiful thing
Alice Hatfield Some day this cabin will be sold for mega cash. A hand built cabin by a TH-cam hero!
Man the closer you get to finishing this the more excited i get, it has turned out so much better than i think anyone would have thought, hats off to you sir!
The cut from "No more help" to her sad face is awesome! Really, really enjoying your cabin series videos.
When I was a child I was always amazed at how focused my dad was. He told me that he always did the job in his head before getting out of bed in the morning. I've attempted to do that myself but never have been as successful as he was. I must say I'm very impressed with how much work you get done and how focused you appear to be. I built my own home from the ground up but it took three years to complete and I had a 5 foot tall girlfriend helping me every step of the way. Congratulations to you Shawn on your accomplishment. Very impressive.
New on my list of lifegoals: Building a Log cabin. Great job
It’s awesome when simple life gives u so much joy. Thanks Shawn for sharing!!
Your aerial shots are fantastic, as is all your photography and video. Such a peaceful place to live. I could easily watch ten times more of your building efforts, it is extremely relaxing to be lost in your world. Thanks .
Oh my lord. I love Cali so much. She is such an unstoppable force of positivity and playfulness. Something that can be a big lifesaver when alone in the woods.
I like your videos a lot. You are a true Canadian badass.
Jameson Cross This guy blows the trailer park boys out of the water!
He is a real Canadian. Hope someday he explains his geneology. I think his roots go deep, and he isn't a transplant from another country. Canadianess is extremely hard to fake.
Thank you for your encouraging words. Dreams really do come true. I know now I will meet someone special like you and
build a cabin in the woods by hand. i'm 64 and finally believe it can happen! Appreciate your effort to teach, encourage, and inspire!
What a wonderful man humble and hard working.
I'm so happy for you Shawn! Now you have wonderful life with your wife and adorable daughters. You're a perfect example of self sufficient man.
I too run my own business, and I, at first had a hard time asking clients for stuff, I'm mostly over that now, thankfully, but you are correct it is a hard thing for most of us, but it is certainly something that must be overcome.
I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your videos, I now live in downtown, like DOWNTOWN Tokyo Japan, I have a small workshop here that I do a lot of work for clients out of. I'm Canadian too eh, I grew up in the interior of British Columbia and was lucky to spend a lot of time in the bush hunting and fishing, I had family who had/have wonderful cabins in the woods that I spent many a weekend and summer vacation at, great memories.
I save your videos for the quiet time when I'm working on something that I'm not running my tablesaw or such, so I can watch/listen while I work. Your videos are a nice calm oasis for me in a very busy hectic week, so I wanted to make sure I said "Thank you sir" for these videos.
Cheers!
Stu
Good job !
Thank you God for all your having fun doing and especially for Family, Friends and Dogs.
How i wish i was where you are. Remember, you are truly blessed to find this opportunity i hope it gives u eternal peace and happiness. Love your videos i keep waiting eagerly plz make more videos. Thanks :D
kashmirianwolf ...l agree totally.
A TON of work, but well worth it. You are an inspiration.
Bro! That place is AMAZING!!!! I would love to have a spot like that to just get away from EVERYONE! I believe this is the way God meant for us to live. Not the over-stressed, over-worked, fast paced lives we live now.
STRESS is a killer 100% xxx
Can't get over how much energy Cali has! And, how she loves to get right in with you to see how she can help.
Another spectacular video!!!! I love all of it, the self reflections, the building, how you manipulate your tools and heavy items into place. Oh, those ham and cheese sandwiches look sooooooo good!!!!! 🍞🍞🍞🧀🧀🧀
Your content is ultra inspiring to me. When I first discovered your channel, I thought, this is a diamond in the rough, then I realized all of your subscribers and views, are a testament to what you have accomplished. I really am indebted to the work you have placed forward for everyone, thank you sir, for each and every episode you have uploaded.
love this channel...thanks for taking the time to share your life with us...
You seem to have found the true meaning of life and the peace that most of us search all of our lives for.
Found you through Joe robinet... i Can relate to that shyness youre talking about. Respect to you sir. Love your log cabin series!
Wow. This guy is insightful. Even a rarer quality than his log cabin building skills. This is my favorite show on youtube right now.
Good job man! That cabin is a testament of craftmanship. Nice that you are able to film with a drone, getting all the angles on the cabin. Totally made my friday, cant wait for the next one. Thumbs up from Sweden
Magnus Persson Tummen upp from me as well. :)
That looks like it's going to be very cozy and comfy cabin. I cannot believe you handled that huge Rock and that stove by yourself! You are one hard worker. Thank goodness you're done with the roof the way that ladder was on an angle scared the hell out of me.
Sweden take your Country back, dont let em breed you wonderful people out!
Here I am, living in the middle of downtown traffic in Salt Lake City. I've spent the morning arguing with the Post Office, my Credit Union, a plumbing company and a window washing company. I want to scream. I've also been trying to restore my vintage Sid Bell knife. It's my connection with an outdoor life. I accidentally put it in the dishwasher. The assault stripped the patina from the stag antler handle, and turned the blade black. I love your cabin videos and Self Reflections. My mind and spirit are always refreshed. I'm always touched by your expressions of a great love and appreciation for your wife. What a woman!!
Loved watching the whole build, such an escape for the listener/watcher, but can you date your videos from now on as it’s good to be able to see the order in which they are made, especially for newcomers for such an exciting and awe inspiring project. The combination of your method and discipline as well as with your philosophy is a great mix...lovely, thanks a lot.
That has to be the happiest dog I have ever seen. I'll bet she sleeps good at night.
This is so cool! Just been inspired by you to gather some of my friends start building! Keep it up, from Norway!
Henrik Martinsen You can do it and inspiration is where it starts!!!
What a great looking cabin! I've been enjoying this series for a couple months now. That first fire must have been a special moment for you. Cali is creating smiles here in Southern Wisconsin and around the world I imagine.
Shawn, just wanted to say I hope I can be a viewer for eternity. Great content and super inspirational for someone that has an extremely different lifestyle. Thanks for the entertainment and motivations!
cooking and eating indoors!!! What a milestone! Great vid as usual but you should put a door on your cabin!
Congratulations, on first fire. Cannot imagine how many times the thought "Wish I had another hand" went through your mind. Especially working on the roof. See Cali is being really helpful!
11:40 -11:55 she looked so sad when she couldn't help and had to lay down lol. What a great dog and companion for this project.
Brother the " RANT " is why I love your channel , I get you and it's real my friend !
I like the way you marry the building of your cabin with the life lessons you’ve learned, I hope many disillusioned 23 year olds discover your channel and find strength from it. Keep up the good work.
Fairly new subscriber. I enjoy the self reflections. I hear a lot of myself in you. I’m very introverted yet I’m a professional saxophonist by trade. I have to stand in front of hundreds or thousands of people. I have to remind myself that if I don’t ask the question, the answer is always no. I lack self confidence even at 59 years old. Thanks. I enjoy the channel.
The Saxophone is a beautifull instrument and i would be honored to hear you play it! xx Have confidence! You are amazing xx

I’m re-watching from the beginning again. I get so much from your videos Shawn. Reminds me of my childhood on our family farm, here in Australia. My father restored an old farm cottage to liveable standard so he and my mother and I, could live in it till she passed away from cancer. I loved the ruggedness that country life gave us. 90min drive from a town, 4 mile from any neighbours and the peace that only nature could provide. That was 36 yrs ago, now that I have a family of my own, I’ve moved us further out bush. Spending time in nature and getting your hands dirty has a whole new meaning to living a fulfilling life for us. Thanks for all your efforts of filming your wood working projects and sharing your life with us. Watching you is very nostalgic.
What a beautiful cabin. Great project. Thanks so much for sharing.
Once again, Shawn, just amazing work. I couldn't help but smile at the first smoke through the chimney. It always feel so dang good. I hope you're well and please, please keep inspiring us all with such great content!
I love watching this channel. I have a high stress career that consumes a lot of my time. The video helps me learn something new, as well as just enjoy viewing. I couldn't help but notice how the dog was having a good time. My dog (a Doberman) has a similar personality. Thanks for producing these video's. I have to get back to patient charting. But this channel is always a welcoming break from work. Respectfully, Rick S. M.D.
You're wife sure did hit the jack pot when she asked you out! I really enjoyed this video! Love the the guitar sounds, and the stillness while you were out in the canoe! Nature is an incredible healer!
I'm sure I'm not the only city dweller living vicariously through your videos. Keep it up man, cabin looks great.
I am going to be 50 this month. I have 3 kids, 23, 21, and 16. I told my 21 year old son "you HAVE to watch this guy, just watching him work on his cabin brings an indescribable kind of peace". I've watched maybe 3 weeks of your videos and I have to say, it is so mesmerizing. Your reflections at the end are just an added bonus. I live in downtown Toronto so I get the whole (I don't even know what to call it), thing. I am fortunate enough to have a family cottage that I can get away to but that is only seasonal. My grandparents built a log cabin in the middle of nowhere, much like you, with no electricity, and that was also such an escape for me. I'm at the point in my life where I'm reevaluating a lot of things that I'm doing and one thing keeps dragging me back and that is to nature and the lack of BS that comes with it. I have a 5 year plan where I'm going to sell my house and buy a piece of paradise and build my own kind of home where I can garden and enjoy the simplicity of life. I love watching your videos and I love that you share your lessons in life with your viewers. It gives me such a sense of peace. Please continue!!
Thank you for this. What a wonderful channel. I am a single man that has dreamed my whole life about this. My life too has had trials and tribulations, leading me to the mgtow path. I subscribed right away, I see some value you can add to my life. 1st video and I am already excited about the next video. I also shared right away. Much appreciated
Hi Shawn, thank you so much for sharing how you met your beautifull wife!! I Pray that Heavenly Father will Bless and keep both of you always! You have withstand the storms of life!! You are truly an inspiration to millions!! One of a kind! 🙌 🙌
Thank you for sharing stories anout your life and was already a subscriber😉👍
Cali is quite the construction helper. My Labrador would snooze until supper time and stare me down until it was served. Cheers.
Thank you Canada for attracting/making these kinds of people. He is seriously bad ass. Needs a better fade out from music to cart scene. Thanks for making these.
This is the absolute best footage and editing of an outdoor/how-to/guy-in-the-woods type video I have ever seen.
Thank you very much for taking us along, Shawn.
lookin good!!! think your dog is trying to be a show-stealer
did u notice that the dog was trying to gather grass thinking it moss ? dogs,,, not to smart but we love that they try so hard to help us and defend us,,, I just found it funny that love for all things transcends species and the need to help is ingrained in even animals
Mom of 4 in suburban Houston... but we lived in the mountains of Colorado & in Northern New Mexico for a long while. Been in a metro area for 6 months now and miss the woods, nature, the smell of the outdoors, streams, wildlife so much. My family watches your show to help us imagine how we can build a cabin for ourselves within a few years, and as a great way to spend some chill time together without the mindlessness of regular TV (which we haven’t paid for in a decade - proud to say).
We have a location in The Rockies on the in laws’ ranch where we can build something like this. Having access to power, tools, and a tractor on the ranch does make this kind of project more doable for us since we live 16 hrs from where we will build and can only work on it in the summers. There’s a greenhouse & large garden on site, along with chickens & goats for eating off grid.
We can harvest pine beetle killed trees on national forest land for very cheap (you get a permit & they want it gone because of fire risk), and have access to a chain saw, truck and trailer. We would then buy a smaller mill to process it for our needs.
We will use a gravity fed cistern filled with well water (we already have it) for running water, a small solar panel for electric (already have it), solar water heater for hot water (easy to DIY), and an outhouse for the bathroom. I plan to cook outside on a camp stove and fire. We would likely do an outdoor shower, as we can shower in the main house for short stays in the winter. Our grey water will pipe out to an existing “lagoon”. I would like a wood stove or rocket stove, as there’s plenty of firewood on site. Cement footings are already in where a yurt once stood. We might have to add a few for a rectangular base, as what’s there is circular. If $ permits, we will start summer 2018 and finish in summer 2019.
I thought about doing a straw bale cabin, and might if it is cheaper and easier, but I haven’t laid out costs yet. Don’t really know how to do that. Anyone have a spreadsheet for this kind of project?
It is so important for our kids to escape suburban trappings and thinking and just work/be on the land. It’s amazing how much fun kids can have with just trees, rocks, branches, dirt, and their imagination. The lifelong impact on the kids of building something like this as a family is immeasurable.
So... dedicated follower here. Keep up the great work & relevant reflections.
Guitar music is like the noise of peace. I really love these videos!
Bushcraft Baxter like a calming stream.
Sean, Thanks for doing and saying what we all would love to. Your videos are awe inspiring and I can never be patient enough to wait for the new ones...so i watch the older ones again. I'll bet you never expected to have 113,000 admirers- who would love to be friends.
Thank you for another great video, I look forward to them every week! Your channel has rekindled my love of the outdoors that had gradually faded away since I moved to the city for university a couple years ago. This series and your self reflections have inspired me to spend more time outdoors and point my life in a more "self reliant" direction (and even start building a cabin of my own!). Keep up the great work!
OMG .. Shane, you are an INSPIRATION ... To man kind. I have been watching your vidoes for 3 days now and can't get enough ... I'm a 70 year old Australian. I lived and worked in China for 8 years. I retired from teaching in 2013 and came to live in Vietnam. I live in Vung Tau, by the beach but I'm currently having a home built in the mountains , in Da Lat. Like YOU I'm having it built to my OWN taste ... Thank you so much for your entertaining videos
Loving this channel. Although you do scare the crap out of me sometimes on that ladder...
Deborrah Cuttriss Sherman, I️ totally agree about the ladder.
Great things are not achieved without taking risks!
Excellent work! I´ve watched you since you started building your cabin and watching you sit down for a meal inside of it made me feel completely in awe.
Dude sounds just like Kevin Costner.. If you have noticed give this a thumbs up...
Looks like him aswell.
Great to see that stove in. Nice reflection also. I was very shy and finally asked my high school sweetheart out and now we have been married 46 years
Mindblowingly beautiful roof! kudos and congratulations on a job well done.
Exactly, so who gave this a thumbs down?
I really look forward to your self reflection segments and enjoy them quite a bit. I could see you writing a book about your life, the lessons you learned along the way, hunting and fishing stories, and a detailed description of the experience of building the cabin with a look into your thoughts and emotions through the process. I think you're a pretty relatable person and it would be a pretty good read.
Keep doing that "My Reflections" part of your videos Shawn. It's incredible how similar our lives are. I even can relate to the part about your Dad. Thanks for opening up about your life experiences , I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way about your videos.
Do you run any survival courses ? I would love to make the journey from Philadelphia up to your part of Canada. I have alot of time on my hands due to a career ending back injury doing heavy highway construction for my local union.
SO,SO ENVIOUS OF YOUR CABIN AND YOUR SKILLS, YOU ARE AN INSPIRATION AND IT IS A TREAT TO WATCH YOUR PROGRESS.
Great love story. Thank God for our wives being bold or at least more so than us. Where would we be? Definitely worse off. I had missed this video somehow, thank you again for sending it.
I adore you!
You help me so much on the hard times.
Thank you for everything and don't stop :-) you are an amazing & relaxing person.
Wish you health and happiness!
This was an awesome episode. I think waiting a week between each video is just plain mean. Good work on the build and please continue!!
Tynyyn 😂
Fabtastic series. LOVE the stove (and the bargain you found) keep up the great work!
Thanks for sharing your Self Reflections, Shawn! I love your cabin videos, you are doing great work! Wow, ths cabin is.... just incredible!
First off i want to say Thank you for having this series. They are very informative and inspiring. There are many things that i can relate to in your reflections . Please keep them coming cause i look foward to seeing the next video. Thank you again and god bless.....
I don’t know why or how but your videos give me so much positive energy and make me feel full, the simplicity and honesty of your videos are highly addictive! Thank you for your time, your cabin looks amazing and you make everything look easy and simple ... great work my friend!
Omg your dog is sooo cute. Reminds me of my late dog Dax :)
Survival Lilly Thank you. I remember. Never forgotten, but there is always room for one more love
There's such peace in these videos. Great insight into the cabin build, the outdoors and just life, plain and simple. Thank you!
Great video! Love the stories about your life!
Love your doggy! Your dog is so happy to be out in nature and he seems like a ham for the camera!
Some serious slabs of Ham Sir.
Shawn im so glad i found your channel. On my channel i try to inspire others as you do with my porch time series. Thanks for being real
Great video as usual Shawn, cabin series rocks! I also now officially release you from any expectations I have that you'll be able to respond to each comment the way you've always done due to the huge growth of your channel and hope you also don't feel guilty about not getting to every comment moving forward. Not to sound condescending either but watching you move from small outdoors channel to burgeoning TH-cam behemoth is so rewarding as a loyal subscriber. May your efforts bring you continued success and your cabin keep you warm through the cold northern winters!
Adam F Thanks Adam! Lol, yes, it's getting more difficult, especially with Facebook, Instagram and my website comments too. I really appreciate each and every viewer and feel blessed
LOVE THE BLUE STOVE!!! Couldn't finish watching the roof work...you up there alone gave me anxiety....lol. Floor is looking great too.
