I want to live the rest of my life In a cabin like that though, with nothing except a computer hooked up to a generator technology wise. My plan is by 19 to have this cabin built, and live there with animals and a farm up in Alaska .
My husband and I are older now, and just found your channel. We did a great deal of work for ourselves when we were young to build a home. Yea, I was a boy scout at age 8 and started fly fishing when I was 14. I absolutely get what's going on with you when you're "out there". Especially in the pristine areas. I've got 2 acres in Southern Utah that I'm going to build an adobe and rough lumber home on. I'm nervous about my skills but watching you really anchored my commitment and confidence. I'm going to follow you and take pictures of the process. Intelligent, kind, hard working, (probably introverted) and productive. Just excellence.

You made me found my love for woodwork and crafting, because before I was cleaning out a cave and creating a sustainable life place in an actual cave. Thank you for your content. My dad built our house in the 50s with hand tools, some skill and lots of heart. I was mesmerized by this reminder of that time. Bravo to anyone with this level of determination no matter what the goal!

After watching this, I think the best thing for us to do is buy the kit. We are in our 60’s and we see that the mind is willing, but the body says “Oh you you ain’t”. We would have loved to do this when we were younger though.
We bought a kit and that really is picking a plan, they cut the logs, Number them, include some direction and a rep. will come when your ready to start the first log..got mine from Montana, lodge pole pine..but only because my Grandparents did that in Montana in 1912!, they deliver...right to you..but you really do all the rest..that for ,me Is the best of memories!! I had no clue how to do that or even what one looked like. What I did know was it would probably cost me $200. (or more) to have a repair person do it for me & I just don't have the money. I watched You Tube, found out what the problem probably was (by the symptoms) watched how it was done (more than once), ordered the part and changed it! It now runs beautifully! Yes, I think one of the wonders of the internet is that it has brought out people's altruistic nature to share what they know for the simple satisfaction of helping others, even when it offers no tangible reward for those doing the work. This is what Microsoft did not anticipate when it spent years and tens of millions of dollars developing the Encarta encyclopedia, before the rug was yanked out from underneath them by the far superior Wikipedia, which is put together for free and makes money for almost nobody. There is no sin in the pride of being knowledgable and competent, and of sharing what you know for no other sake than to do it. The shared knowledge and wisdom available on forums for topics of all kinds, combined with instructional videos, make almost anything possible. For instance, I am building my own MRI machine out of toothpicks and marshmallows, and learning brain surgery in my spare time.

Here in NZ I build a lot of small shelters in the bush for hunting and overnight camps with my children but this is taking it to a whole new level of awesomeness!

I leave youtube alone for a few weeks and come back to find one of the best videos I've seen on the tube. It really puts it into perspective how many videos and how much work you've put into the cabin when you see it in this beautifully edited video Shawn. Struth, it must have taken days to put this together, not to mention all the filming over the year; all as if you actually were a paid film-maker. Not only is this cabin amazing, the time and effort taken to film, edit, and produce all these videos is impressive. So much work went into this and its truly amazing and inspiring. As always, amazing work and thank you for these videos.
My dad built our house in the 50s with hand tools, some skill and lots of heart. I was mesmerized by this reminder of that time. Bravo to anyone with this level of determination no matter what the goal!
i have not commented yet but i have watched every video from start to finish. i do think i have enjoyed this project as much as you. i hope it is not the last one you do. you have done a magnificent job on this cabin and i just cant wait to see what is next. thank you for sharing this video with us.
After watching this, I think the best thing for us to do is buy the kit. We are in our 60’s and we see that the mind is willing, but the body says “Oh you you ain’t”. We would have loved to do this when we were younger though.
We bought a kit and that really is picking a plan, they cut the logs,
Number them, include some direction and a rep. will come when your ready to start the first log..got mine from Montana, lodge pole pine..but only because my Grandparents did that in Montana in 1912!, they deliver...right to you..but you really do all the rest..that for ,me

In an earlier post, you said something along the lines of "sorry it's taking so long on the build". If I were doing what you are, I'd still be cutting the trees down. You're making tremendous progress. I always look forward to your videos.
david coryell The entire wall portion of the cabin was built from pre-cut and milled fence posts, or at least that was my understanding per his earlier video when he did the first stages of construction in his backyard.

Did you ever watch A LONE IN THE WILDERNESS? I have watched it so many times and you men amaze me! If I weren't the age I am I would try to do this too! You are so right, the drive to do this and to learn new things. I am a woman, 75 years old and I just changed the carburetor in my riding lawn mower! I had no clue how to do that or even what one looked like. What I did know was it would probably cost me $200. (or more) to have a repair person do it for me & I just don't have the money. I watched You Tube, found out what the problem probably was (by the symptoms) watched how it was done (more than once), ordered the part and changed it! It now runs beautifully! Yes, I think one of the wonders of the internet is that it has brought out people's altruistic nature to share what they know for the simple satisfaction of helping others, even when it offers no tangible reward for those doing the work. This is what Microsoft did not anticipate when it spent years and tens of millions of dollars developing the Encarta encyclopedia, before the rug was yanked out from underneath them by the far superior Wikipedia, which is put together for free and makes money for almost nobody. There is no sin in the pride of being knowledgable and competent, and of sharing what you know for no other sake than to do it. The shared knowledge and wisdom available on forums for topics of all kinds, combined with instructional videos, make almost anything possible. For instance, I am building my own MRI machine out of toothpicks and marshmallows, and learning brain surgery in my spare time.

It makes me think about those settlers and how they've made their cabins and how difficult it must have been for them. Here in NZ I build a lot of small shelters in the bush for hunting and overnight camps with my children but this is taking it to a whole new level of awesomeness!

I leave youtube alone for a few weeks and come back to find one of the best videos I've seen on the tube. It really puts it into perspective how many videos and how much work you've put into the cabin when you see it in this beautifully edited video Shawn. Struth, it must have taken days to put this together, not to mention all the filming over the year; all as if you actually were a paid film-maker. I wouldn't be surprised if some TV channel wants to make use of you after this. Thank you, love the channel and the great content; I'll binge watch the remaining videos I've missed while away.

It's been a dream of mine since I was a kid. Now 44 years old, I'm getting older and less capable of working the hard labor needed to build it. I have now watched the whole video, this video is a privilege to experience. I'm not Canadian nor any person with any construction experience at all, I come from a small village in Sweden and I'm a .net developer, you could say I'm the complete opposite of building cabins. I love the attention to detail and the use of non-power tools. The reflection at the end really confirms that you're full of wisdom which is much appreciated to hear those wise words you shared. This is just awe-inspiring. Many of us have pipe dreams about doing something like this, but you've actually gone and done it. Not only that, you've documented the whole process. The dedication and craftsmanship involved is truly humbling - I thought I was pretty hot shit for laying my own laminate floor and installing a loft hatch! But you get maximum respect from me. I've only just discovered your channel - now I need to watch all of your videos from the beginning of the project.
That's not what the videos show - the first couple in the series show Shawn felling trees, clearing the plot, debarking and stacking the timber.
