I just think the price is wrong on this camera, it needs to be priced lower to succeed.

It’s USD1200 cheaper than the A7RV where I live plus extra battery and 64GB card as ‘gifts’. That’s a significant difference….

I agree, it is not a pro body with the features removed. It is however tempting as a travel camera where you can crop in and bring less lenses (landscape, occasional portrait) compare to the A7Cii... But the price difference between a A7Cii and A7CR is too high for enthusiasts. I am however very happy to see a silver body (as a non pro). I am currently Fuji X-T3 and I am tempted... But between an X-T5 or X-H2 and the increased price on the glass side... (Viltrox 27 1.2 is a third of the price of a Sony 50 1.4 G) It is certainly a very big bump. Bringing down the price of the A7Cr would have been less of a scary move as I can spread more the purchases of the lenses thanks to the crop... And the Fuji Autofocus is coming along to a level that is now acceptable for a non pro.

I think that the design of the Sony A7CR with the EVF in the corner is a great thing, but the EVF needs to be larger with much higher magnification, it also needs a joystick and a simpler, thinner back screen, then I will buy it ! Maybe I would even buy two...

  • @Cthames123

The value of A7CR is it gives much of the A7RV, (61MP!, IBIS, Autofocus, etc.) in a smaller body at 75% of the cost, (-$1000). The “doesn’t have this or that” talk makes me say if you need/want all the bells and whistles buy it in the A7RV. I’m pretty sure Sony says that as well! Those who value the common features of both that separate it from other models but don’t need the things that make the A7RV $1000 more expensive (joystick, extra C buttons, better flippy screen, better EVF, better battery, 1 extra IBIS stop, 8k video, etc.) are going to jump all over the lower priced A7CR.

I agree with Chris from the point of view that neither camera is cheap. The "Bells and whistles" of which you write are quality of life improvements for which a professional would gladly pay a premium (one card slot can be a deal breaker). For who is the A7CR targeted? Amateurs? It seems like a backup camera for a professional; the batteries are thus fortunately the same!
So are you an advanced amateur for whom this camera appeals?
My opinion is that the Compact full-frame cameras are paradoxical.

Good analysis! Completely agree. I would love a completely stripped down version of this compact body with a very simple tilt display at a lower price. Less buttons, fully focused on photography. Stick one of tiny Sony lenses on there, like the 24mm f2.8 or the 40mm f2.5 and you really have a good alternative to the Leica Q3.

The compactness of the a7cr is negated by the FF lens sizes. Unless you use some of the smaller Samyang lens and maybe the Tamron 20-40mm. Alternative is APSC, the sigma 18-55 APSC on the Sony A7CR would give you a crop at still 26mb. More than plenty for most use cases.

This makes me appreciate my Sony a7rv much more. I have size 4 XL hands and I need a battery grip for my hands to fit comfortably on the camera. The compact version would be way too small for me. I do wish Sony would come out with firmware updates like you said when they drop a new model. But I could never buy a camera without two card slots for what I do. Plus i use my evf 99% of my photos so having something smaller and less resolution is no Bueno for me

I respectfully disagree. I sold my A7RIII and purchased A7CR w/ light Sony 16-35 F/4 it weighs 847 grams 😮 with my Q3 the A7CR is a perfect travel setup. I don’t think answer is so black and white it depends on the type of photography one shoots. It’s not ideal for wedding but it’s great for travel photography & landscape photography ❤. Total travel weight A7CR w/ two lens & Q3 = 2.25 kg😊 covering 16mm-105mm f/4 and fast F/ 1.7 prime❤

Funny thing is I'll buy the A7Cr even if it is the same price as the A7RV and it has the same reduction in features. Why? Because size is worth something; size alone is worth $1000. I want a small, full frame, camera! The EVF is just fine, as is the one of the non-R A7 cameras. It doesn't affect picture quality so I don't care. More importantly, the A7Cr has smaller, thinner grips! I like smaller thinner grips and I dearly miss the ergonomics of the original A7/A7R before they repeatedly make the grips and body thicker and bigger. Finally, all the slight reductions in shooting speed, IS or the missing card slot? Meh, I was on the A7RII for 8 years and it didn't bother me.

You are using your right eye, you can find centered evf useful.
Some people use their left eye, in that case, left positioned evf will be more convenient.

Completely agree with your video! I was really excited about the A7Cr but the price has me pausing to buy. Too many compromises verse the A7rV. I like the idea of a smaller discreet camera but this is really expensive for a camera that is essentially the same as the A6700 except for the sensor. The other point you make well is with this sensor, it's better with higher quality glass like GM lenses and those are larger and heavier and not well balanced on this body. Sony needs to make more G lenses like the 24, 40, and 50mm for these two new bodies.

You said it Chris, they definitely missed the mark not including the multi angle screen which I feel should be standard on all Sony cameras moving forward. As a photographer, I would have bought the A7CR as a small lightweight additional body if it had been fitted with a tilt screen, but having previously owned the A7iv, I hate the flip screen. As a main body totally agree that the a75 makes perfect sense. But if you compare the a7cr with say a 24mm G and put it up against a a Leica q3 then it’s good value. I shoot the canon R5 and have RF glass which I love, but canon offers nothing in this interchangeable compact range. Come canon get with it 😅. Tried Fuji a second time using the x100v and it’s always left me feeling that I wanted more from it. A bit overrated unless you are jpg shooter. But as a high res, FF, ibis compact camera the a7c is the best option availed at the moment. Just wish they had the better evf and the a75 flip screen. Who knows maybe the a7r could sway me to to Sony eco system long term 😊 Nice review though.👌👌

Exactly my point :) the prices are for people who do not look at the price and other options... A7CII is so much more expensive than the Canon R8 which is almost the same camera on paper...A7Cr is too close to the A7rV.
And we need small and cheap pancake lenses. Canon has now 28 2.8 that is something we need on the E mount. 16 2.8, Nikon has 40 2.0... Sony makes pancakes that are F1.8 big and more expensive but they are slow F2.8-2.5 and sorry but the 24 2.8 G is not the greatest optics...
I think Sony are holding back now because Nikon and Panasonic are struggling. Panasonic released the best camera in the lower enthusiast class (now with AF) by far just like that from nothing, Sony made the A7rV with the screen like on the S1H... I am usually not a conspiracy theorist but... I think A7CII and A7Cr can be much cheaper and must be cheaper.

I love your content @Chris Brockhurst, (your content is fantastic), but 4:55 I disagree with everything you said. The reason why they are providing the modular grip in the first place is to address the ergonomic issue you are highlighting in that with certain lenses the camera’s body/grip is too small. So, Sony provides the modular grip which can be put on and taken off, and you are still complaining. I don’t get it…The reason to get the A7CR and not the A7RV is to save the $1000, without having the ergonomic compromise.

There is one thing you forget: When a newbe buys their first camera, they need to buy a lens too. When they buy the A7CR they can get the body and the 20-70 f/4 lens for only $200 more then the A7R5 body only and start photographing, when they buy the A7R5 they buy a nice doorstop for the same money.
And what is more, all the points you tell us, Are not directly influencing the end results, only the IBIS does in low light situations, but not by much.
When you make a camera small and $900 cheaper there are things that must go and I find it good you show them in your video. but I think you should not state that people should not buy one of those cameras, they must decide what camera is best for them.

    • @chrisbrockhurst
      @chrisbrockhurst  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

it's unlikely that someone buying their first camera is buying an A7CR. The screen difference means worse user experience, evf means worse user experience, IBIS is a decent enough difference for me to talk about it.

@@chrisbrockhurstI own the A6400 it has a worse LCD screen and the same EVF. Yes I've seen other screens and EVFs and yes they are better. And yes it is very good to point that out! But in the end it is not a very bad experience at all.
And with a newbe I meant in this context a newbe to FF mirrorless cameras, maybe coming from a DSLR or a APS-C or M43 camera, or from a high end fixed lens camera. But yes I could have more informative about that point.
The problem with a lot of reviewers, they get a lot of cameras t review and see the best of the best, and the worst of the worst, but forget at some point that for some people the worst is good enough. I never had any trouble with the EVF of myA6400, I never had any trouble with the back screen (I only use it to change settings). So for many people these worst points aren't that much of a trouble. People should go to the stores and see it for themself.
And I do agree on IBIS The A7R5 is superior, but is it a deal breaker? Not when fast action or not low light is your thing!

I would say pricing should have been $2000 and $2500 for a7cii and a7cr respectively. However, at current prices it makes much more sense to get an a7iv or a a7rv . Yeah, they lack some software features but they can actually be used on a professional environment. Lack of dual SD, less buttons, no joystick and micro HDMI instead of full HDMI really undermines the C cameras to be considered as workhorses

In addition to the better EVF, flippy screen, joystick control, and 2 additional custom buttons, the A7RV gives you 8k video, better battery life, better In body image stabilization (8 stops vs 7), dual SD card slots, and a full HDMI output. The enhanced LCD screen and EVF seem pretty expensive which is likely where the cost difference comes in. When summing up all the extra features I can see where the $1000 price diff comes in.

you forgot to mention the micro-HDMI on the a7CR vs full size on the a7Rv.
I think a better evaluation to show the bad deal you get with the a7CR is comparing it to the a6700. They have the same EVF & screen!! what? $1400 vs $3000!! So you're paying more than double for the 61MP vs 26MP (oh, and both are the same if you're shooting APS-C mode)
I was holding out buying the a6700 to see what the a7CR was like. Thought I would like a smaller body with APS-C lenses for walkaround, but would have the FF in the a7CR when needed. But Sony killed that idea for me, since I have the a7Rv, and no way would I want to pay $3000 for a substandard experience (EVF) walkaround "APS-C" that i could accomplish with a $1400 a6700

People really need to stop comparing brand new prices vs. discounted promotional prices for existing products. If A7C R is $2999 new, that means deals will start popping up by Memorial Day next year. Good chance that it'll be close to $2k for deal hunters. Why would the same deals that exist for A7R V this year not exist for A7C R next year? I think the $3k starting price is reasonable.

Why get a slightly smaller camera like A7C line at all at first place that still not pocketable like RX100 line because you still end up with a smaller camera that you still need to put into a bag but still noticeable from far away as a guy with camera when you use and lose its benefit if you going to use a big lens but end up doesn't have the great handling and quality of VF on a slightly bigger body camera and it just feel smaller from your own perspective and handling, not from the crowd the full size A7 is just A7C attached a proper size EVF, better go really small or go proper size. But how is the pinkies on the A7 body, is it still tight for it on the full size A7? I decided not to get A7CII/A7CR as my first camera, it's exciting that they are the new products but the actual practical one is A7RV and I will get it, althought the silver top of A7C line are good looking, I will get the 70-200mm F4 macro G ii with 2X converter to shoot tele and macro and I thought to just use iPhone 15 with its 13mm, 26mm and 52mm to shoot closer things, less intimidated and always be with you too, I thought to get 16-35mm F4 PZ too but depend on the fund and if the iPhone 15 is enough, not sure if it will be a waste not to get that lens to shoot video with it and just shoot with iPhone 15 tho
