This did not, as they say, survive first contact with the enemy. They had no solidity, no flexibility, and no shots on goal when the opposition turned up.
In contrast with England, Scotland have a settled team that has played together for some time now. Unlike Southgate, Steve Clark has a system that is tried and tested.
Scotland's tried and tested: qualifying in 2nd place or by play-offs, but missed out on WC England's chaos and upheaval: qualifying in 1st place (ahead of the European Champions), Semifinal, final, quarterfinal. England have set up pretty consistently barring injuries, and many of them have played together for a long time. Pickford, Walker, Stones, and Kane have all been starters at the last 3 tournaments, Rice, Saka, Foden and Bellingham have been in squads/starting at the last 2, and there are only 3 players (Maguire and Shaw injured, Henderson dropped) different from the last WC.
Bro, I'm Hungarian and have kept telling my family, "don't think we'll be the surprise team of our group, we won't be beating Scotland and then the rest willl be extremely hard" and they don't believe me. I've 'discovered' them way back in a funny way when I was betting, and the odds for Scotland's win against Gibraltar were like 1.04, so I wanted a handicap, and I'm like "damn, 1.6 in handicap, that's good" tunrned out it was 0:4 (which I didn't know existed, thought it was 0:1), and they won 6:1 (so they got the 5 goal difference), ever since then I've always been looking at them from the corner of my eye, and they've got some good talents, and insane work-rate.
yo hey! yesterday I was just happy for Germany's result but HUNGARY? omg Hungarian team is WILD. I really love watching them play, they don't give a shit about Germany's intimidation factor. They're lethal in the air and a team I genuinely worry about every time we face each other. Ofc I hope Germany wins against you but I hope both score awesome goals and that we have a brilliant match. Cheers bro
@@mesmo4888 Yeah we're definitely good, I think our biggest problem is nentality, we can never play as 'the better side' we always need to be the underdog to perform incredibly well, and against teams where we're on around equal footing or even deemed stronger, we tend to give away a lot of chances and not play as focused. And we did a lot of that today against Switzerland too.

Dykes and Hickey are out already - could play into our hands because Ralston and Shankland have different strengths, but Dykes is huge for us against stronger opponents because he gets something on every long ball and we don't have an equivalent target man - hopefully we don't need him
I remember the Argentina World Cup. I'll wait until we've won it before I say we'll win it. Even then, I'll probably wait until the VAR has been looked at.
As a proud Scot who has watched us at many tournaments over the years I can confidently predict we will do well against Germany and then find a novel way to pluck defeat from the jaws of victory and get pumped.
Good breakdown mate , I’m quietly confident, ignoring the friendly results , most of the games were decent until we started making a lot of changes , I think we can give Germany a good game
Speaking of injuries, think one of the big differences this year is having Tierney fit. If he stays fit, Scotland qualify for the knockouts. One of the best players on the cover, along with Robertson. So quick and good on the ball.
As a Scottish man.. I feel like we will be lucky to get out the groups. If any Scottish team could have a good run at this tournament.. it would be this one though. They don’t quit. Proper old school Scottish side.
Really enjoyed this..very clearly explained. Thanks. Wonder if they might start Adams up front cos he is bigger and, as a lone striker, so would be better able to hold up the ball than Shankland?
10 goals from midfield this season for Man U, not bad in a largely struggling team tbh, plenty others would have him in a heartbeat and his record in qualifying for Scotland last year speaks for itself.
@@derekhough-jm9gc Man Utd are not poor lol,They missed many players and have a lack in depth because of bad transfers,United would beat Scotland in a heartbeat with every fit player back,Don’t even compare the biggest club in the world with Scotland.
I’ve just got a gut feeling Lewis Morgan is going to make a massive contribution to the team. It may only be one kick of the ball as a sub but he’s going to do something big.
I feel like Scotland do have something to show at this tournament and are more than capable of getting out the group. My trouble is will they get out the group? Because Scotland don't exactly have a great history in these competitions, however records are made to be broken and it makes me very excited to finally get to see Scotland in major tournaments considering I went 20 years without ever seeing it or believing it could happen so soon.
I’ve always said we’re better than we get credit for and could get out of the group. But we need to be on it and have no key players out. Which doesn’t give me hope as we haven’t had amazing form and a lot of injuries
Although i know how much the scots hate the English, i cannot return the compliment, i find the scots, very witty and have always enjoyed their company, i wish them a great run in the tournament, they have suffered enough footie torture over the years and its great to see they have a good chance to go further in this one.
USA fan here - the US team should play similar style with 3 CBs that morphs to 5 -4-1 on defense, but we won’t because we have a manager who is in over his head and why the probability of us crashing out of COPA is high. Meanwhile, Croatia did pretty much an analogous set up against Portugal with a 2-1 win in the friendly run up to the Euros. Their ability to quickly transition to 5 in the back was a thing of beauty to behold. The only goal against them was Diego Jota, on the counter, when Croatia were caught out and couldn’t reset the defense. Worth watching and breaking down.
@@abody499 By the way how did that zero zero draw against us go down in Doha? Did you go out from your council house flat on a classic British bender and salt your ridiculous warm beer with your tears?? Assuming you’re British of course. Given all the talent you have, your squad should cross out their names on the back of their shirt and write in permanent marker “Underperformer.”
Scotlands chances almost entirely come down to not conceding early. If they can drag a game or two out, or sneak a goal early themselves… we have a great chance
@@derekhough-jm9gcthat was one game, our goals usually come from John’s creativity, Mctominay’s habit of being in the right place at the right time, and Tierney/Robbo putting in a nailer of a cross
Will always wonder what could have been if Hickey, Ferguson, Patterson and Doaks were fit for this, but even so I'm cautiously optimistic about escaping the group with this squad and this system. For a third choice liability with painfully limited gametime, Ralston looks exceptional and was easily the most positive takeaway from the Finland game. Conway could also have a break out performance here, and I'm so glad he's in the team, but I'm gutted that we're missing out on Doaks.
There's enough good things and bad things to say about Scotland as a team that I think it'd be foolish to predict much. I'd say their goal should be to progress from the groups since that may be possible with as little as one win (3 points). The Good - Team spirit. They are a settled group of players who know each other, have played the same system for a while, and seem to trust the manager and back each other. - The fans. They'll back their team until the end. - The midfield. If all fit and energetic at this point of the season then the four of McGregor, Gilmour, McGinn and McTominay (and Christie is an option there too, I don't think the same eleven will start the three games at all) can be dangerous. Gilmour and McGregor aren't really defensive types. They are both better on the ball than chasing it. Conversely, both McTominay and (especially) McGinn are absolute dynamos and can physically dominate some players. They are also our goalscorers. And Christie is our sort of utility player. He'll come on at attacking mid, fill in at defensive mid, sometimes even fill in up front, or play inside forward when we used to try wingers. - The left. Robertson is a very very good left back. Tierney (at his best) is too. Almost all our threat comes from the left. - Good results in recent years against Spain, Norway, Serbia, Ukraine, etc shows that they can get big results occasionally. The Bad - Like every other country we have some injuries and they probably affect us more than some other countries who have more depth. We've lost our first two right backs. Ralston has never let us down but it's still a loss. Ferguson is a loss too. He'll be first choice very soon, I imagine. As it was, he could have played a big part here even if he wasn't first choice (Kenny McLean has never been first choice and his greatest moments are all fairly significant). - Fitness doubts. Robertson a few days ago had a knock. McTominay has had an injury. Armstrong and Adams too. Cooper, Hanley, Ralston, McKenna have all hardly played for various reasons. - Recent defeats. We took on some friendlies against better opposition and took a few beatings (which is liable to happen - we can beat good teams on our day but we can lose 5-0 when it isn't our day!). That's caused some defensive concerns. I think we've looked a bit susceptible to crosses recently. - History. It's due being broken as a run but we haven't gone through the groups before. - We could struggle to score if McGinn and McTominay aren't 100% on it and struggle to defend if we don't sharpen up at both ends. Our forward needs to be able to hold the ball and let the midfielders get around him. And at the back we need to use the width of the pitch with the ball and defend crosses better without it. All in all. Firstly - just happy to be there. Secondly - Germany (tough game but pressure's on them), Switzerland (regularly go through the groups but we've decent history against them, I sort of fancy us in this game the most), Hungary (worries me a bit as they seem quite like us in that they've proven they can worry big teams on their day and outside of the guy from Liverpool - who is class - they will be largely unknown to us, our final game with them is very likely to have a lot on it, we've generally been good in pressure situations in recent years, I hope that holds true). Finally - I'll take whatever results we get and hope for the best.
Im Scottish. Here's the reality of it. We're pish, we've been pish for nearly 30 years. We got pumped up the erse. Anyone that thought we'd do anything except a take pumpin needs tae have a word wae themselves. We'll get pumped fae the Swiss and be lucky to take a draw against Hungary. But rest assured, we'll still be shite.
Scotland's system creates a solid low bock with five stretched acriss the back. But it has two vulnerabilities 1. The wingbacks can be overloaded as have no wide pritecting midfieder. 2. It is vulnerable to shots from range, which the germans are the freatest masters of. Germany may play one striker and pepper the scots goal from outside the box from the german attacking midfieders, and even the deeper lying kroos.
looking forward to friday night. reminds me of getting Brasil in the opener years ago. gave them a fright but wee tom boyd was unlucky as hell.. probably something similar on friday. We seem to snatch a glorious defeat from the jaws of victory at major tournaments. However, there's a part of me that thinks we might surprise a few people, perhaps even ourselves. I agreed with your final team selection as it's what I'd pick too. Shanks to start, Che as an impact sub with 20 to go and perhaps Conway for Christie if we're chasing a draw and play with one 10 and two 9's. I like the system, we're not here to park the bus, but Clarke has always set up teams to be hard to beat. Which suits us better. If we go far, Shanks for golden boot.
22 competitive games, 15W 3D 4L since last Euros including wins over the likes of Denmark, Austria, Ukraine, Norway and Spain, a squad that knows exactly how to play and have been largely together for over 3 years now, also we have some very very underrated talent with the vast majority either playing for English Premier League teams or Celtic i.e. are used to playing in the best league in the world or the Champions League and are used to the expectation of having to win every game. If we keep our composure most of our team are very good on the ball and will be able to hold our own against most teams, it'll just be about no stupid mistakes in defence and actually taking our chances when they come along
IMO England would also be well suited to this system, Foden/Jude/Kane make a good forward line here and Rice/Gallagher make good CMs. Trent and Shaw/Saka as wingbacks. Gomez/Stones/Walker as CBs.
@@shugmchugh5107 Which is how we get more from McGinn and McTominay. We score more goals through our central midfield than anywhere else because our striker doesn't play as a poacher. Shankland will be useful in this tournament, but we are less effective when he starts games.
@@davidkelly790 too right. I'd honestly rather Dykes for the reasons you said, he'll play unselfishly. If Shankland plays at all, hopefully it's only the last 5-10 mins
@@shugmchugh5107 That's why Dykes plays for Scotland. Lets be honest, he's average on his best day. But he gives us the presence up front and works himself in to the ground, this allows the better players to flourish. We don't have any good strikers, not for this level. Clarke is an excellent coach, he knows that to get the best from this group you get the best from our midfield and the left side of our defence. That's why we play lopsided to give Robertson lots of the ball and get McGregor, McTominay and McGinn in to the side at all costs - because as much as we'd love to claim that we have loads of good players we simply don't.
Hurried in to write something funny about wine and aging etc etc. only to discover that some 800 people - including 4-4-2 staff themselves beat me to it….
Thanks for the video. I'm Russian, but... I'm Scottish and have been for Scotland since I was 11 years old. Why? Because in the 18th century, my ancestors moved from Scotland to Russia to serve Tsar Peter the Great. This is an interesting story, but the story we will see tomorrow will be more important. It will be difficult, but God will help Scotland. Without doubt!
Interesting however I feel that james forrest can be a wildcard for us also Conway. Forrest is so direct and very clever footballer who brings something else. Conway is great 1 touch and he'll not need a lot of chances to score . The one thing I fear most Is as u said depth however like you already mentioned they're are platers who are versatile so here's hoping anyways for the 1st game we'll see how we do.
@themightyi67 I agree Steve Clarke needs to bring him on 2nd half 60 70 minutes in he's the only player in that team that will be direct have a shot, take someone on you know
Turned up as a bunch of robots, marking spaces, forming shapes, but forgetting to actually play. This might be the best example of manager / coaching paralysis by analysis I’ve ever seen.
Other teams fear Scotland because they might get injured by numpty defenders that cannot tackle properly... result.. injured opponents and red cards galore. I hate it when Scotland qualify for Euros or worse still, the World cup. It is so, so embarrassing.
I am not as optimistic given our recent form in (albeit) friendlies. However, we have a history of being very poor in friendlies so I’m not sure how much to read in to that. If we just focused on our competitive form then I would be optimistic, so it depends what Scotland team shows up. Also, with regards to this system I feel like it has its limitations. Robertson gets some assists for us but I still feel like he is better suited to playing with a winger so he can make overlapping runs- like he’s used to at Liverpool. The lack of pace in the team, especially out wide, can leave us a little one dimensional in attack. For example in recent games such as at home to Northern Ireland we seemed to have no alternative ideas to break down a disciplined low block. Without wingers and pace out wide then they could just pack the box and the middle of the field and not worry too much about losing a 1 v 1 out wide, or be concerned about a wide player getting in behind the defence. Granted it was only a friendly, but I feel like we don’t really have a plan B if this system doesn’t work. And there’s clearly a reason why almost every club and international team play with wingers- they commit defenders, create space for other players and are a goal/assist threat. Also, like you say, while it is great that we are so clinical with our chances, it’s not realistic to expect that to continue forever. At some point these guys will start missing some chances or lose form. So then you are either reliant on other players (but we don’t have a ton of goals in the team) or perhaps a different system (which we also don’t have). Not trying to be negative but as someone who watches every game we play I’m not getting too carried away. While our competitive results have been great, they have probably slightly flattered us, and our friendly results have been awful. We have a chance to progress at the Euros but we have to be much better defensively than we have recently and hope that McGinn and McTominay are on form- otherwise we are screwed.
Why anyone would watch Goldbridge or any of the others after watching this is beyond me, this is grown up football analysis . Unique in this genre . Brilliant work!

Scotland's tried and tested: qualifying in 2nd place or by play-offs, but missed out on WC
England's chaos and upheaval: qualifying in 1st place (ahead of the European Champions), Semifinal, final, quarterfinal.
Germany looks petrified 😬
Yes, but don't worry, we are Scotland and we bask in glorious failure
yo hey! yesterday I was just happy for Germany's result but HUNGARY? omg Hungarian team is WILD.
I can understand this analysis 😮
Well done that doesn't happen often.
At every tournament, there is always a team that surprises, that punches above its weight, usually going out gloriously at the semi finals. In 74 and 78 Scotland actually had squads that were good enough to have been that team. In 74 they could have been that team. In 78 they should have been that team.
I hope I live to see it happen.

Oh daddy oh daddy oh daddy 🏴🏴
Keep an eye out for Shankland's composure when presented with a goal scoring opportunity.

Speaking of injuries, think one of the big differences this year is having Tierney fit. If he stays fit, Scotland qualify for the knockouts. One of the best players on the cover, along with Robertson. So quick and good on the ball.

Wonder if they might start Adams up front cos he is bigger and, as a lone striker, so would be better able to hold up the ball than Shankland?
This popped up on my search today 😂😂😂
McTominay seems to be valued in a Scotland shirt and not in a United shirt
Manchester United have struggled to find a system which gets the best out of many of their players, of which McTominay is just one.
Man U are poor but better than scotland
10 goals from midfield this season for Man U, not bad in a largely struggling team tbh, plenty others would have him in a heartbeat and his record in qualifying for Scotland last year speaks for itself.

Great video 👍 good to see someone go into that level of detail in how we play. You're spot on
USA fan here - the US team should play similar style with 3 CBs that morphs to 5 -4-1 on defense, but we won’t because we have a manager who is in over his head and why the probability of us crashing out of COPA is high.

I think Nigelsman watched this video and went 'Gotya!'
There's enough good things and bad things to say about Scotland as a team that I think it'd be foolish to predict much. I'd say their goal should be to progress from the groups since that may be possible with as little as one win (3 points).
The Good
- Team spirit.
The Bad
- Like every other country we have some injuries and they probably affect us more than some other countries who have more depth.
Couldn’t get the ball out our own half and didn’t have a shot on goal

Anyone that thought we'd do anything except a take pumpin needs tae have a word wae themselves.
We'll get pumped fae the Swiss and be lucky to take a draw against Hungary.
But rest assured, we'll still be shite.
Scotland's system creates a solid low bock with five stretched acriss the back.
But it has two vulnerabilities
And it can't keep relying on Harry McGuire

looking forward to friday night. reminds me of getting Brasil in the opener years ago. gave them a fright but wee tom boyd was unlucky as hell.. probably something similar on friday.
Think Germany never heard this ⚽
22 competitive games, 15W 3D 4L since last Euros including wins over the likes of Denmark, Austria, Ukraine, Norway and Spain, a squad that knows exactly how to play and have been largely together for over 3 years now, also we have some very very underrated talent with the vast majority either playing for English Premier League teams or Celtic i.e. are used to playing in the best league in the world or the Champions League and are used to the expectation of having to win every game.
Should teams still fear Scotland?😅☠️
I'm convinced Shankland has a chance to be a Griffiths type striker who could score more on better teams. With 14 less kids.
Hopefully Shankland isn't starting, Adams suits the system much better.
100% you get more graft out of Adams

The one thing I fear most Is as u said depth however like you already mentioned they're are platers who are versatile so here's hoping anyways for the 1st game we'll see how we do.
Jamesy’s experience will come in handy he wastes absolutely no time on the ball
@themightyi67 I agree Steve Clarke needs to bring him on 2nd half 60 70 minutes in he's the only player in that team that will be direct have a shot, take someone on you know

Hoping the Scotts humble Germany opening game!
Well... As a German I can say that this was the easiest match ever. xD
Chat shite got banged
They lost 1-0 to Northern Ireland. You left that bit out. Do you even watch them bro?
Dia dhuit (what you said at the start) that's Gaelic but only something we say here in Ireland. They say 'Heileo' in Scotland
We have a chance to progress at the Euros but we have to be much better defensively than we have recently and hope that McGinn and McTominay are on form- otherwise we are screwed.
reality check for fools who think they know something about football.
Hindsight’s a wonderful thing but even as a Scot - who came up with this 😂😂😂
