Great tips - reduce to managed frames, all hives probably have wax moth - you need enough bees to control it, wax moths wont thrive if there is daylight. If i have learnt something, you have done a great job.
    Thanks

Great video. As a new beekeeper, small hive beetles are the thing that concerns me the most. The child of teachers in me, however, feels compelled to point out that your friend is able to "attest" to your statements. Were he to "contest" to the facts, he would actually be disputing them.

I had a hive this year and I moved a frame into it but there were wax moth eggs I guess because within a few weeks the bees had left and it was full of wax moth larva. Boy was I upset, this is a good lesson learned. Thanks for putting this video out.

The idea of swapping out boxes is excellent. I've had hive beetle issues in the past in both production hives and nuc boxes. Nice way to also clean up the boxes for the next season.

i really enjoyed this vid . It was timely .I am a new beekeeper.I just lost my first ever hive due to absconding. The small hive beetles had infested my hive, hard way to learn about hive beetles. It broke my heart.I had only had them two days and experienced a robbing by wasp, hornets, praying manthis and other bees. All this at the same time.My poor little bees were black and furless. Thought I had staved that off .Then the bees left.I found the nuc box full of hive beetle maggots.I caught a new swarm or the original ones returned to a top bar hive I had next door.
So I will surely use your advise.

Thanks for the advice David! I started seeing beetles here for the first time last year, now they are a full blown plague. My bees seem to have learned to deal with them now for the most part and I'm keeping traps and baits in now. My bees are doing great so far this year.
I really like the looks of those feeders, they're very similar to some ten frame feeders I bought from Kelley's last year in principle except mine are big rectangle feeders with that bunt pan style design. Those look great for something smaller like for Nucs.

    Thank you for the video.
i made a split, the queens hatch and the bees carried them out the hive dead. Don't know what happen.
But, I put a frame of brood into the nuc once in a while to keep them strong and so far that worked.
The only issue I had one day was robber bees and I fixed that by building a robber screen and using a robber screen for 2 days.
Having some more queen grapes on the frame again. This time I transplanted some of the queen cells to a different hive using a queen excluder and left some cells on the frame in the nuc , maybe I have more luck with it this time.
Thank you very very much for your information.

Ok, what do you do when you don't have a bottom floor to your 10 frame deep boxes of your brood chambers and the only bottom that you do have is the Screen bottom boards which is mandatory in FL to help Colonies breath and survive here where I live at.
Do a video with a 10 frame deep box screen bottom boards foundation hive and show us what to do in that situation

She has been in the queenless hive now for a few weeks, but she does not seem to be laying. I have inspected the hive for the last 3 weeks and she is is there but nothing is going on... Any thoughts? Oh yeah, I did add a frame of brood to the hive this week.

  • @reneebrown5598

Do solid bottoms do better for beetles and moths or do screen bottoms? I'm thinking that screen bottoms will allow the eggs and small larva to drop out of the hives. So maybe if I use DE on the foundation below my hive. I've got a 40 frame long Lang.

We had a 3rd year old mature hive with 3 supers that we harvested honey from last year mid summer. While examining this spring we noticed some of the frames had still not been drawn out so decided to leave it alone. It has been a hot/wet summer and we were a little negligent with monthly inspections. Upon an inspection about 6 weeks ago we found it infested with moths. Went back today and it was completely dead. What could I have done to save my girls? The one next to it seems to be strong and no signs of infestation other than a few beetles. Though I did not break it completely apart and look for the tunneling on each frame. Should I do that?

I see you used OSB as the structure on some of your boxes. Doesnt OSB have a bunch of chemicals in it? Also its not the best type of sheathing to use in a weather / rain / wet environment.....even when painted. That bottom board is absorbing moisture from the air. When OSB starts to "blow up" it opens up voids in the sheathing where mites and fungi can fester. Marine grade plywood better choice maybe?

Is that stuff on the bottom possibly pieces of wax or brood particles? Is it always a sign of hive beetle and wax moth larva? I just got my hive boxes set up and the bees put in on Friday morning.....i shown my light into the entrance the first night to make sure the bees were ok and I saw all of that stuff on the bottom board......I wasn't able to be around the hives when they were set up...I never had my suit yet my husband helped me since he had his.....i'm worried to death about the bees lol

    • @davidhaught84

Its always best to tilt the hive forward, by doing that it assists the bees of riding out wax capping that could possibly be used by hive beetles as nesting for their eggs. And try to scrape out the bottom boards.

Hi, I love your videos. I just wanted to ask what kind of ant's it is that I see crawling around on you hive's? I am asking because I had bull ants, and you don't see very meany while the sun is out, but around 10 or 11 at night if you shine a light on the hive you will see hundreds of then, and they will kill the queen, They also eat all the larva's. I know this because it happened to me. Then I remembered my grandfather telling me about bull ant's killing a queen bee. You may have already known about this, but I just thought I would share it.

    • @icecold1011

I make my splits as strong as possible to start with. SHB and wax moths are merely the clean up crew after a hive has already become too weak.
If a split succumbs to either, that's MY fault, not the fault of the bees, the SHB or the wax moths.
