    I keep bees but also chickens. A trap that will not make them really wet would make it easier to use them for feed like my japanese beetles traps. Any idea to do that would be very valuable to both beekeepers and chicken raisers

    Years ago I helped with a small hive beetle study. The formula we used was very affective and brought in beetles from all over. The suggestion was to put the trap away from the hives so not to increase beetle populations in the hives.
    Are you finding beetles in those traps? I can see you catching a number or pests for beehives.

    • @BlanchardsBees
      @BlanchardsBees  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I actually didn't notice any SHB in the traps because they were so full of everything. My best defence for SHB is keeping my hives strong and if I see them getting out of control I'll throw in a swiffer sheet.

      @@tayebwabenon5753 The trap was pre-baited with whatever it was they were using. Every week I received a new prebaited attractant and the beetles were sent in for counting.
      All I remember (been quite a few years) that it was sticky and had a smell to it.

    Thank you for the video and the info. Dealing with one hive full of wax moths right now. I see the larger bottle (the first one shown) has more wax moths in it. I wonder if they are attracted also to the darkness and/or limited space of the bottle sitting inside the block? Or maybe the placement of the bottle as far as height in relation to the hive boxes? Anyway, I plan to make some traps like this and get them out asap. Thank you.

    I'm sure this method works. Why do you set them in your apiary instead of fifty yards away, so not to draw mothsto your hives? Just curious

    • @BlanchardsBees
      @BlanchardsBees  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's just where I put some of them. The smell of a hive will attract pest reguardless if there is a trap there or not. I don't even use them anymore as I learned a strong hive is your best defense against hive pests.

      @@BlanchardsBees I'll definitely keep the method and recipie in mind. I started keeping bees this year attracting 4 swarms. 2 arrived in April on the same day and then another 2 arrived in June on the same day. We have 2 langstroth all midis and 2 layens deeps. All seemingly doing great still. They have been all over the loquat and passion flower this month. I live in southern Spain near to Granada. Natural beekeeping without chemical intervention. I haven't taken any honey this year, just letting them build up with intention of doing 2 splits in the spring.

      @@BlanchardsBees Thanks for the well wishes. We had a beekeeper a few hundred yards away. I counted about 25 hives and swarms of bees with my binoculars. We likey borrowed some of his bees? Interestingly in August he removed all his hives. Maybe he's renting them for pollination, I'm not sure as I've not met him yet or seen him kicking around. It was a great help and perfect timing for us non the less. Hopefully we can repay the favour if ours choose to flee the nest.
