Often, it is also complemented by a misbehaving keyboard. For example, you are able to select an icon on the screen with the left mouse button, but you can't open the options menu with the right click. Or you are able to open the options with the right click button, but unable to select the option with the left click. There is an even bigger issue where the keyboard doesn't work, even when putting in a new one, or when you press any alphabet only once, it keeps giving a continuous line of input. He currently has a Lenovo G570 and G580 which were dropped off for repairs for the exact same reasons. The mouse pad seems to be working just fine, but the buttons don't work. There are no keyboard issues. The first order of troubleshooting is to ensure that the connector wire is correctly inserted in the clasps, both on the palmrest side and the motherboard connector. In case it has, use an appropriate IC cleaning fluid (he used a WD-40 spray) in minute amounts to ensure there are no foreign particles. Also, check if the mechanical switch itself is working. The red palm rest buttons shown by him under the cover are just rubber nipples; the actual switches are on the motherboard. Ensure that the rubber stubs are not damaged. Now comes the important part. If none of the solutions above pan out, we check the motherboard side for issues. (Please be very careful in handling the repair part here) Check if the motherboard switches do work by using the tester instrument shown, by actuating the switch with a screwdriver and checking for current flow. If they do, then you have a problem with the Super(?) I/O chip shown by him. In such a scenario, you will have to heat the chip to around 80-100 degrees (I'm guessing Centigrade, as that's the one used in India) with a blower. This should solve the problem, at least it has 99% of the times. Please be warned, this chip is a very critical chip on the motherboard and overheating or any other variations in the heating process can damage the chip, hence it is highly recommended that this step be done by professionals.
