I bought the 'Doris Akers Sings' album in 1965... I carried it in the trunk of my car to college... then through the Army 1966-69... then got married and after 54 years of marriage I STILL HAVE IT! :) It puts a smile on my face and in my heart every time I hear her sing. Her music really ministered to me in times of need. It's rather scratched... but I'll get rid of it only after I can no longer be on this old world to hear it! :) This is 2022, and I'll be 77 in August... Go with Jesus, the Great Shepherd and you'll never go wrong!
I had the great pleasure of singing in the Sky Pilot Choir under Doris Akers back in the late 50s early 60s (Inglewood, CA). She was a gifted director and especially composer and singer. Elvis performed at least one of her songs that I know of (Lead Me, Guide Me). Doris was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. When I was in the choir, Billy Presten played piano during Wednesday evenng rehearsals (he was 12 years old at that time) and during services was on the Hammond organ. Stunning talent.
Just discovered this beautiful lady a few days ago. God bless us with these gems in each generation. So many voices to hearwhen we get to heaven. What a place of beauty and joy. Come Lord Jesus. Thank You for using our lives for Your glory
I discovered Doris many years ago when TH-cam was in it's early days .TH-cam has changed my life and keeps giving me blessings everyday..my time machine..TH-cam..takes me back to days before al of us and even further sometimes .I believe it's the biggest deal we have ever had in the WoRLD!!
I knew she was black, but given the time of this video, I'm surprised they were allowed to perform together. Does anybody have any more insight to this? Was she passing to be able to sing with them?
I didn't know but I fell in love w/ her music many years ago, I first saw her on the Bill Gaither show. I thought she was white but praise God I didn't care.
I thought she was white until she opened her mouth and then I knew that she was influenced by blacks or that she was mixed. Found out that her father was white. She looks exactly like him.
@@ericsills6484 She looks as white as they come. oh well I guess it is true what they say, blacks come in a all shades & hues, from the lightest to the darkest.
That makes sense. I have a friend who looks white, but she found out she had a black grandparent that she never knew. I guess any genetic traits can be passed down or not.

I've never heard of her, but it's never too late. I love her voice! 💖

Would've been nice if she had children to carry on her tradition.

Wonderful black woman
And it sure confused me the first time I heard that. She looks white to me, but she does have the spiritual voice of a black woman.

Imagine growing up in her day. She went through a lot.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🙌🏽
I could immediately tell that she was black. 😊
