This is pretty. It is well done, but I love Doris Akers version of late '50s. It has the traditional syncopated bounce of the black church. Blues slurs and bounce give it an authentic sound. Mahalia killed it, but it was a different song, not the same music.
Yes the one Mahalia did on her 1961 album was a totally different song. However, she did "Spirit" like this version in 1954 on Studs Terkel. She included the verse "Up on the mountain my God spoke out of his mouth came fire and smoke." She admitted she needed her Sunday school book to sing the song because she had forgotten the words.
Brother, I think that you are more likely to get something out of it if you accept that it was written as worship to God by people who were largely in captivity, did not have much theological training but nevertheless felt close to God inspite of their adverse circumstances. You are free to analyse the song if you want; and if we follow your stated line of reasoning, one could argue that they felt the Spirit all the time and prayed all the time. Just my humble take.
