I think that THE LONG GOODBYE is the masterpiece which is particularly splendid in the film of the 1970s with many masterpieces. A film to want to see over and over again. A sense and the technique of the director of photography are the best, too! Cinematography Vilmos Zsigmond,he is genius.
I loved this movie when I was a young, intelligent movie aficionado. Still do. Once tried everything to find a copy when such things were more difficult.
Umm, Cowboy Bebop is an anime, which means all the characters are Japanese. That's why we got the Korean guy from Harold and Kumar in the live action adaptation.
@@Yayojayoful You are so ridiculously wrong, there is no way to begin making you see it... Well, I give you keywords: atomic bomb, USA, occupation, cultural appropriation back-and-forth. ;)
Glad I've seen that movie at cinema in 1975. Good movie, great actors, good story..! I like the atmosphere, I like to see those old bus going to Mexico, old streets, old buildings, adventure, and the song : the long good bye....!!!!
That last sentence is the most important, as during all the movie, from the beginning to the end, it's what affects the most Marlowe. Strange indeed how the loss of a cat may be hard. It also shows that his so called friend lied to him, betrayed him, used him.!!!
This movie has to be an influence for Cowboy Bebop, it seemed so much like an influence that at times I felt I was watching a live action remake of Cowboy Bebop set in the 70s.
I agree that preview is poor. But the movie is actually pretty good. In fact, I think its one of Altman's three best films. The cast is good all the way around, even Nina Van Pallandt who was not really an actress. It also features a young Arnold Schwarzenegger. Even he was good since he had no dialogue. Its a really offbeat, quasi spoof of the Hammett private detective genre. And Gould is really excellent as the kooky lead.
+garrison968 Arnie can be a good actor, even with lines. His recent film, Maggie, proved that. He just needs to quit with his action films and focus on more dramatic works. Did wonders for Stallone. He's getting an Oscar for Creed.
I dont like every Altman film, but The long goodbye is one of my favorite movies period, watched it many times and never get tired of it.. But i would also recomend 3 Women and Short Cuts from Altman, good stuff
My favorite film of all time and to me Altman's masterpiece . McCabe And Mrs . Miller is right up there close . Whats this Marlow ? "Its a baby shoe" its my favorite line .
This movie notoriously went from being marketed as a crime thriller to being marketed as a spoof because critics were expecting someone like Humphrey Bogart and got Elliott Gould. But, while it may not be the most faithful adaptation of Raymond Chandler's novel, it captures the attitude a lot better than some other Philip Marlowe movies. Chandler's Marlowe is a decent man hiding behind a sardonic sense of humor to survive an indecent world. While he may not make a better Marlowe than Bogy, Gould captures more of the charater with his weary smirk than Liam Neeson does with his humorless scowl.
"Whats this Marlow ? "A baby shoe " lol that line gets me every time . This is one of my top five films , but If you are an Elliot Gould fan you MUST see " The Silent Partner " when he is a bank teller . Its a very close second in my opinion . And If you like 70s films Two Lane Blacktop & McCabe and Mrs. Miller are also great.
Yes, the Late Great Jack Sheldon. A good friend of both my father and my uncle. He introduced me to my first shirley temple at a matinee at The Jazz Lighthouse In Hermosa Beach circa 1964-65
It was on tonight, but I wanted to see it from the start. By the way for Raymond Chandler fans out there, who did the best job portraying Philip Marlowe?
I always liked Mitchums Marlowe, but this movie is good in its own way and Gould did a good job with the character it's just different. The ending of this movie is worth it. Gould goes from clowning around to drop dead serious and I found him believable. "I liked that cat" lol
i think Humphrey was the better Marlow..maybe cause he came from the time period Chandler wrote it in..so a laconic, cynical, rough and ready kinda melancholic male is portrait differently..its still post ww2 times.. Elliott had a lil too much of a clownish/funny attitude..fitting more into the 70s era...didnt like that..
Love this movie but man what a bad trailer - it gives away the ending in this first few seconds, as well as being generally poor! But again love Gould and love the movie
Truly awful preview. See the film if you like Raymond Chandler stories in a 70s LA. And Gould, Altman and Sterling Hayden. It's sadly dated and not in a good way.
Never liked Elliot Gould, his face, his acting, his punk character and hated him in MASH. Gould, you will not be sorely missed by one movie fan when you're gone.

Gould reminds me of Anthony Bordain.

A young Elliott Gould would have been the perfect Spike Spiegel
I think Gould in this film was one of the influences for the creation of Spike.
@@Madbandit77 absolutely right, spike has a clear inspiration, from the chill attitude, the smoking, the attire and the sharp shooting

I came here after seeing the casting on Netflix to point this out to people... It is a no brainer: Elliott Gould / Philip Marlow IS Spike...

You've sold me! I want to see the movie
I think the trailer captures the "old" and yet "new" approach of the movie, as does Gould's performance and even the bluesy - sort of - music.
Chandler+Altman+Gould= masterpiece!
A MUST SEE FILM - nothing cooler than this!
SILVER Screen GOLD!!

I think he should've been considered for Cop Land. Next to Creed, i feel that this was most serious work.

I can’t believe this is literally live action spike spiegel
coolest movie I have ever seen! Fantastic!
Holy crap what a phenomenal movie!
Write the check, Roger!
Very good movie, I was surprised. Kind of a Bogart detective thriller
Great movie. I was going to buy it on bluray this past weekend but Robot Jox was ten bucks cheaper.
Tarantino must have been influenced by the terry lennox drive scene for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Most likely this film heavily influenced him in a lot of areas.
Who owns this movie??
This one should really be available for purchase on TH-cam. It is only available with ads on Pluto TV, btw.
You can buy it on Blu-ray, as Kino Lorber has released it twice on Blu-ray in the last 8 years.
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures.
MGM/ United Artists which is owned by Amazon Prime.

Awesome!

Elliot Gould as Phillip Marlow? I can't accept that. Bogie was the best Marlow.
Trailer doesn't do the film justice. I mean had I seen this preview in 1973 Im not sure I wouldve been sold
His house in the movie is next to the famous “High Tower” in Hollywood Heights. Great walking tour, built early 1900s/1920s?
Thank you for the information
These are 10-20 million dollar properties in 2023 , Back then rent was $650 .

Wow. This trailer pretty much spoils the whole movie.

Humphrey Bogart. No one else comes close.
Gave it a once over because of Elliott Gould but seriously, it looks like slapstick.
Gould would have been a perfect Anthony Bourdain had he looked like he did now
Saw this in college and blown away the first time. Look for the cameo of former governor bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The cat steals the show.
