In the late 50's- to early 60's my grandparents, George and Florence Holmes, were the licensees at 'The Cattle market Tavern' which was across the road from the market and fairground (Not to be confused with the Catlemarket *Hotel* also across the road). My grandmothers sister and her husband were licensees at ''The Grapes', down the end of the lane. As a kid, up until my mid teens when I left for Australia, I lived across the canal in Stretford, but I spent a lot of time in Salford as my parents often used to help out at the pub (red bus to the swing bridge- green bus to the pub). I used to get lots of free rides from the fairground people who knew me from the pub. They were great people. One busy night when my grandparents were both sick, they ran the pub and never took a penny in payment. I also remember the Lyons Ice Cream factory. They made my aunty a free ice cream cake on her birthday. I am 72 years old now, but remember the old Salford in great detail. There was also a 'skid pan' just down from the market and across the road from the picture theatre. I can stll see it in my mind. But I wouldn't possibly recognise any of cross lane as it is now. Possibly on the wrong page for this, but going back prior to the Cattlemarket Tavern, my grandparents were licensees at "The Britannia Hotel' down in Ordsall. That was demolished in about 1959. I have great memories of that place also. I especially remember watching out the window, as the cattle were being driven down the streets from the docks. Salford was such a unique and brilliant experience, with a lot of great people.

I am 68 this and I really enjoyed the film I ve told my mam to watch it she is 93 this year. I was born in salford royal. Spent 2 years in Brookland Street before moving to Monmouth Street ordsall. And went to ordsall board primary school. Hay played in the canal areas. Ordsall Park was really posh remember sitting next the sister of the guy from the Holly s.. Susan was her name. Lovely memories I ve gone on to meet more very famous people. Me the little ordsall Salford girl.

A great video, what can I say, born in Salford in 1957, I went to Cross Lane Market with my Mum, we lived in Weaste, in Emerson Street. I had a great aunt who worked in Armitage bakery off Regent Road. This was a place of terraced houses and people who had lived their for years, it was a community. It seems to me the heart was ripped out of Salford by the building of Salford Precinct. This was happening to lots of cities in the 1970's and the planners ruined them. It is so sad, but I appreciate that someone filmed it, we never did that in those days, not like today!

It's a big thumbs up from me for this great video. I went to Clarendon school in the 60's and remember Cross Lane so well. The Carlton cinema, all the pubs and shops. Used to buy all my records from Disc City. The market clock tower should never have been demolished as it was a great landmark. By the way, the maroon car in the film is a Ford Classic.

Thanks for the video I was nearly in tears watching it, you might say I have gone up in the world but oh my god did I love my Salford, when you went shopping or to the pub you didn't know all the people but still felt an identity with them, something else that has gone.I feel privaliged to have been there.

Hi Val, great video, all i can say is they ripped the heart out of your City, visited a few years ago, stayed in Salford Arms very friendly people everywhere , that art deco clock tower in Broad Street was a work of art , why was it torn down? , "progress"? , my arse. Cheers! Dermot , Dublin

My father had a butcher's shop on Cross Lane, late 50's to early 60'. It was opposite the market and was very successful.

Great Video. I lived in Rothwell St Salford in the 1960's and later Gildabrook Rd Eccles. Moved to Australia in 1966. Returned for a visit in 2000 and found every had gone. It was quite a sad sight. At that time all that was left of Rothwell St was the church at the end of the street, St Clements. Where my house at Eccles was is now the M602 motorway.

Great video. But the Ford Anglia being repaired was a Vauxhall Viva HA. The Vauxhall Cresta with twin headlights was a Ford Consul.

I only remember the area when the precinct was just built and the surrounding flats etc went up. I used to drink in the Keystone but when the Kettledrum opened, was my favourite pub. For a while during the hot summer of '76 and a bit after, the area had a nice new modern feel and I used to walk home up to Nursery Street nearly every night from my mates house next to the Winston, through the precinct, which still smelled like new concrete. I never once met any trouble. I did often see fully grown blokes trying to 'swim' the patch of grass outside the Winstone. Must have been something in the beer!

Excellent video. Lots of that I remember and some I don't. Good to fill in the blanks. BTW the last clip was a view of Thorn Court. I lived on Spruce Court, the other red brick tower block with Roger Krinks barber shop on the bottom corner facing Belvedere Rd. As I say, excellent video

I grew up in 1960s Stockport and I don't know Salford really, but they were similar I'm sure.
I've no wish to return to 1960s North West at all. I remember damp terrace houses, with just the coal fire, and the front room kept "for best".
    40 year-olds looked like 70 year-olds of today.
It's good to see the old videos, they serve to remind me how far I've come.

The school in the background was Clarendon, but became Windsor High School in 1987 and closed down and demolished in 2001. Albion High School was down towards Broughton. I taught at Windsor High.

Great video, I've been watching it with a critical eye regarding the cars , at 1.36 we see a morris/ Austin 1100/1300 mk2 launched late 67 with the flatter style rear lights also seen on later fx4s, it's also sporting none standard hub caps . At the 2min mark we see a lovely wolseley 16/60 and at 2.15 we see a 56/57 vauxhall wyvern, less side chrome than more expensive cresta. And at 5.51 we see a mk2 cortina 2 door on an E plate = 1967 , others have correctly mentioned the HA viva and ford consul classic 315. If I was to have to date the film presuming all footage was done at the same time I would say its 1969. Great clips of how it was compared to the nothingness we see today 👍.

I think as wealth increased, people went further to buy their provisions and when the supermarkets increased and got bigger was the reason the smaller shops disappeared.Local council decisions must have been why the fair disappeared

I have often wondered whether Coronation Street in the early days was an accurate representation of Salford, as Weatherfield was based on Salford. I wonder if there were really pub landladies like Annie Walker and batteleaxes like Ena Sharples?

I note that Hyde retains an indoor and outdoor market, sometimes with the small kiddie funfair rides. The loss now of the banks and building society shops show a new change in things, but overall what was Salford thinking in the 60s ? (and who was pulling their strings and making the money flow ?)

  • @marilynbennett5145

I will tell you what it's like to go back to sulford. After growing up there, I walked down cross lane. I knew it in the 60s. It was a wonderful place. I knew the market a wonderful market. Then they started the buildings that are there today. And it went down Hill after 1970 I was there. Just recently walking down cross lane. It's a ghost town. I can honestly say tears running down my cheeks at the state of the place. Filthy dead horrible environment. I grew up in a place that was vibrant. Shops everywhere walked cross lane with my mother. To the market before there was any high-rise tremendous loss. It's a dead zone full of undesirables I now call it the gaza strip

The "Ford Anglia" in the first clip is actually a Vauxhall Viva. The "two tone Vauxhall cresta" is a Vauxhall Wyvern, they were like a Cresta but cheaper with an engine half the size of the Cresta's. The "Vauxhall Cresta with twin headlights" is a Ford Consul Classic 315. The Ford Zephyr 6 is right though. Gorgeous car!
I'm sorry, I'm a car nerd. I'll get me coat...
