  • If you live in a house with a crawl space, there is a good chance the floor vents are not sealed. This is one of those things that can go unnoticed but have a big impact on your indoor environment over time. The good news is that we have an easy fix you can tackle in a weekend!

    I prefer to attach the boot to the subfloor with sharp point lath screws, fill any remaining gaps with good stuff (window & door) foam & shave excess the next day.

    This is awesome I just told my maintenance guy that there are huge gaps in the one in my kitchen against the back wall. He told me it has to be like that so it can expand and contract. 🤦‍♀️ I told him I didn't think so but my landlord won't pay to have the proper people fix anything

    I put the screen over the top of the vent and used magnets to hold it secure. It will be much easier to clean if it gets dirty. If it does get filled with lint, you have another problem to deal with because all the lint/debris should be getting caught in the return air filter.

    If there is gap, will it pull dust from attic into the room too besides losing energy?

    We were seeing an increase of spiders in the house since the warmer temps began last month. I suspected they were coming through the floor vents. I made custom cut metal filters out of metal screening, and put them over the top of the vents throughout the house and held them in place with strong rectangular chrome colored magnets.
    I have to say they look pretty nice. We also set out several glue traps to catch the spiders.
    So far, we have seen only a couple spiders since then, so this tells me there are some openings in the ducting of the system that will need to be repaired. If any lint or debris build up on the vent screens, it will be easy to take them off for cleaning.

      Sadly this is found in many income based housing units. And they never ever clean vents since build. I got a toxic mold fungus causing a hole through center of nasal septum. I opened vent and water from under sink destroyed the 4 inches of wood under sink thus destroyed vents in duplex. And it PASSED hud inspection...cuz they don't check. They wouldn't fix it. I'm disabled. I wish I could work but I couldn't even breathe the yr I was stuck there. Now, there is no housing. Being used up by non citizens. That's fine but I think that homeless disabled Ameucans should be housed first. We are homeless due to crap apartments and others live in nice hotels. As a US citizen, and independent voter, I'm disgusted. If anyone knows of any help for permanently disabled gen x (55 yr old) women with great credit pls let me know. I'd be happy with a big room. Wasn't allowed to keep furniture as it was infiltrated with black, white and pink mold coming thru central and floor vents for a yr. So now I have nothing. Renters don't pay for problems that could be prevented. And with less than $1000 a month, lawyers are out of reach. Bureau of health said they must fix. They denied. I had to move. Thank you to all GOOD CARPENTERS. I was married to one who prided himself on his work. Sadly, these places don't hire guys paid enough to watch your videos. If I had strength and tools and money, I'd go serve the widows, never forget, that person you help may land you the biggest job of your career. Loving your elders matters. Thanks for reading. And sharing knowledge. ❤

      I do not prevent or kill spiders in my home. I search my house to find their food source and clean everywhere. Spiders do not live long without food and will go somewhere else. If they stay that means your home has other types of bugs that you should worry about. Spiders are like a fire alarm. Spiders are not the problem, their food is the problem.

      Same thing, really

    • @williamallen7836
      @williamallen7836 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Same. Except you will need to pull back the carpet and any padding a bit to gain access to the floor. It's important to have the tape extend to the floor surface by about 1/4 an inch as they did in the video. Also butle tape can be better then the AL tape. Then take a staple gun run a few staples around the top. The butle self heals, and the staples help ensure the tape does not pull up or migrate over time with temperature changes. Also skip the screen! Not only will it clog over time, the screen it's self is a restrictions. It can reduce the total surface area by up to 50% to 60%. This will reduce the needed airflow of your HVAC system without any dust bunnies choking it off. In very short order fine dust will collect and choke it off even further.

    • @BradTraynham
      @BradTraynham 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ever hear of a vacuum cleaner? Clean it every once in a while.... It's a great idea to keep larger debris from falling into your vent system and it's not very restrictive while its clean.

    • @charliebecker4417

      Brad T I'm an HVAC contractor with 32 years experience. The equipment needs a certain CFM to operate property. You don't know your A$$%

    • @BradTraynham
      @BradTraynham 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Dude, keep your comments CIVIL. You are not all knowing. That will cause a reduction of CFM, but not that much of one if it is kept clean with a vacuum cleaner every once in a while. It's a whole lot less restrictive than the register filters people usually put in them. And all the dust and crap that falls through the floor registers will be sitting in the lines, which over time will cause an even greater reduction in CFM (provided they don't clean the lines which most people don't do). I still think it's a great idea.

      best to do at origin of duct leading to the register but if you must do at register cut thin piece sheet metal to size (doesn't have to be perfect screw into edges as possible and then use mastic over the whole new piece and around the edges.

    • @Battledragun
      @Battledragun 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@leonperez9612 Depends on the situation. If you have access to the vent from a crawlspace, basement, or attic I would suggest spray foam around the edge from the underside and put mastic or tape over the seams. If you can't access the underside I would use silicone or latex caulk to fill that gap and you can get to some of the seams with tape, I personally wouldn"t use mastic on the inside. I would never put a screen over the vent unless it was in an area where food or debris were a constant problem. If you do that to all of your vents you are dramatically reducing air flow to the house.

      @@fastrivers812same. Mastic over tape bc most people don’t make sure the tape is sealed right or tight. Mastic fills in any gaps. There’s a new method that is an aerosolized sealer called Aeroseal. It gets in every nook and cranny for a super tight duct seal to the entire system. But not a DIY project bc of specialized equipment and specific procedures.
