Edible Mushrooms: Giant Puffball

  • Thanks to "burtontube" who pointed out to me that I should have said that puffball powder is a COAGULANT not an anticoagulant.I stand corrected!The Giant Puffball ("Calvatia gigantea") & it's smaller relatives are good mushrooms for beginners to try as they have no gills and are white inside. Their taste is rather bland so they take on the flavors of whatever they're cooked with. DON"T EAT ANY MUSHROOM UNLESS YOU ARE 100% SURE OF ITS IDENTITY!

    In answer to 1too3fore's comment below : I clearly stated that a puffball has NO GILLS when cut open whereas poisonous amanitas have them. I suppose someone who is careless could confuse the smaller puffballs with amanitas but in my video I showed examples of both cut open puffballs & amanitas. PLUS I stand by what I say about GIANT puffballs--that they have no poisonous look-alikes; I've never seen an amanita around here (in MA) that even comes close in size to the giant puffball. ALSO the first thing a viewer of this video sees is a warning to never eat a mushroom unless 100% sure of its edibility…

    We just found one of these in a yard next to some scrubby woods in Eastern Ontario, after a 2-week dry spell just before the rain. It was delicious!
    It was so big and heavy I had to give some to a friend. To reassure him about my identification I sent him the link to your excellent video! Thanks for posting it!

    To Zestria Zapax: It's perfectly safe to touch/ smell a poisonous mushroom as long as you don't put it your mouth & eat it.

      Shazbat Nanoo Nanoo But what if a poisonous one tastes good (and not bitter?) What happens to that one guy who thinks that only the bitter ones are bad and ends up eating a dangerous one? Just wondering-- I know I'd never taste anything whose id I was not sure of...

    • @thederb720
      @thederb720  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Shazbat Nanoo Nanoo Was it Dave Arora who uses this method--I'm surprised if it is. I avoid eating mushrooms raw, even those button ones that are found in buffet salad bars; I think they're more digestible if cooked.

    • @thederb720
      @thederb720  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Blanche Cybele Derby Thats why I wondered if it was him because he's SO knowledgable. Lots of folks eat the buttons raw with no repercussions, but I'm not taking any chances.

    • @thederb720
      @thederb720  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Shazbat Nanoo Nanoo You're probably right but raw 'shrooms contain chitin, which is not easily digested by humans and I don't want to chance getting a tummy ache if I can avoid it… so I cook them. A friend who's a raw foodist ate some sulphur shelf mushrooms raw and had a horrible stomach pains (unfortunately he didn't ask my advice--I would have told him that he shouldn't ever do that.)

    I found two of these while hiking deep off the trail in a nature park today. There was one massive one about the size of the one by the cat, and a smaller one next to it. They looked like the spotted ones you showed though. there were no others around anywhere aside from those 2. so it really confused me as to what they were. when i poked the smaller one and opened it, it was a mustard color with the appearing of old dry foam, which turned to dust as i poked it. the dust scared me as i didn't know if it carried any sort of poison so we left immediately. judging by your video I assume it was merely an old puffball gone bad. Thank you for the information! i learned something new today.

    • @thederb720
      @thederb720  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You were right--the smaller one was an old one and the yellowish dust was its spores--not poisonous. Did you poke or open the big one? If it was pure white inside it would have been quite a find but if the inside was at all yellowy, it would have been too old.

You definitely won't find them in supermarkets but farmers markets, especially in small towns, should be a safe bet. • @thederb720
      @thederb720  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually there are no poisonous lookalikes if a mushroom is that size so there's a good chance you've found some. Cut one open to check there are NO gills & that the inside isn't yellowish or too soft...

    great video, on point and informative. Puffballs are also one of the very few mushrooms that can be safely eaten raw - I remember when I used to go mushroom picking with my dad back in the day we used to pick the small young ones, peel them and eat them as snacks while out in the woods. Happy times :) You're right that french toast is the best way to cook them though. I also heard you can cut them into thin sticks and deep fry them (sort of like french fries) but never tried that.

    • @thederb720
      @thederb720  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually advise people not to ear mushrooms raw because some get upset stomachs but clearly you survived the experience & have fond memories of doing it! Deep frying--as much as it makes everything taste better--is not a particularly healthy way to go; but I suppose for a special occasion it would be ok. Guess I"ll stick with French toast (which is also fried), just not in as much fat...

    I have never seen a puffball do you think they grow in Michigan? We are famous for Morels. Do puffballs taste like button mushrooms? I have checked out many mushroom books at the library but too many edible ones look too much like poison ones. I know for sure I have eaten false morels but never got sick luckily.

    • @thederb720
      @thederb720  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they do. Here's a video of someone who found it in his yard:
      www.ideastream.org/newsdepth/entry/56809
      (I don't agree with the professor who says not to eat it--but he's probably playing it safe 'cause he doesn't want people going out & eating mushrooms (even tho' giant puffball has no poisonous lookalikes.)
      You'r lucky to be in a morel area--I'm lucky if I can find 1 or 2 here in MA.
      Puffballs taste very mild, somewhat similar to button mushrooms. They take on the flavors of whatever they're cooked with. Morels are much tastier!
      Keep looking--you may find one yet.

    Wow! They're amazing! Have just found such a giANT PUFFBALL today in the UK, and wanted to know if I could eat it. Thanks for the ID and eating advise. Except, 'my puffball' had already been nibbled at by creepy crawlies and such, and had a clean slice off of its side making me think someone else had passed by and taken a bit of it home. Any way - I will return to where the puffball was and see if I too can have my nibble at it as well. Who would have thought that a giant puffball could be shared by so many different creatures visiting it, including homo sapiens, in its damp field location? There's something so primeval in this recognition and finding of a giant puffball.

    • @thederb720
      @thederb720  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, we're not the only ones who appreciate puffballs!
      Better return soon to where you found it as it may start to deteriorate or someone may take the whole 'shroom! Make sure the inside is white.I f it's turning yellow, then it's not good to eat. And be sure to cook it.

    • @jakeornot6306
      @jakeornot6306 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was just going to ask how one would know that an edible puffball has not started to deteriorate. So, it would be the interior yellowing, then? And what, please, is your position on slicing off a piece of the puffball, as was done in this instance. I would think that would speed up the spoilage process, and/or expose the interior to outside "factors" which may not be so palatable. I understand that education plus experience makes all the difference. Thank you.

    • @thederb720
      @thederb720  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I judge whether it's a candidate to eat by 2 steps: first I GENTLY push on it--if it's soft I leave it alone without cutting into it. It should be FIRM to the touch; then most likely it's good to go. Cutting into it first may cause quicker deterioration--that's why I rely on the "firmness test"

    • @jakeornot6306
      @jakeornot6306 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm so glad I didn't close out the page. Thank you. I've been a puffball fan since childhood, but haven't had the knowledge I felt I should have in order to take the change on the ID, so have never eaten one. Even armed with the information you, and other have provided, I will still probably forgo the experiment, but I'm a step closer, thank you, again. Is there a minimum size-diameter that you look for to ensure the ID, or has that nothing to do with safety.

    • @thederb720
      @thederb720  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Puffballs come in all sizes a you can see in my video. I tend to go for medium sized ones (3" in diameter ) & the ones --the giants--that are about the size of a volleyball. Those have NO poisonous lookalikes--they're so large.
      If you find what you think is a puffball, perhaps there's a nature center or college botany department nearby where you can bring it to get confirmation of its identity? You're wise to be cautious!

  • @thederb720
    @thederb720  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    If it's big enough and you can cut around all the areas that are yellow and use only the white areas, I think you're ok. You want it to look like firm tofu. Yellowing means that it's getting ready to produce spores.
