Grand Enchantment Fail - the Tale of a Hike Gone Wrong

  • We were supposed to hike from Phoenix to Albuquerque on the Grand Enchantment Trail. It takes a lot of time, effort, and commitment to prepare for a long distance hike, so failing to complete one can be a tough pill to swallow.

Attempted the YHR sobo last year - finished the northern half and bailed just beyond the start of the southern half. We got crushed by weather and fatigue, but learned a ton in the process. We started a few days ahead of you. Going for the WRHR this year. Keep cruisin 🤙

Ironically, the trips that are filled with adversity are the ones that you seem to remember the most. Over beers with my trail buds, we always seem to reminisce about they ones that went wrong, instead of the ones where everything went right.

Some of the best videos, are those that end differently than expected. Perhaps it's the wisdom we take away from them? The novelty? The rarity of an imperfect display, among the usual glamorous instagram shots we usually see with social media hikes. It's human, all too human. :) Thank you.

It is best to call a hike if people are having doubts. In your case one bailed earlier then another was sick. No regrets or second thoughts when you have to bail on that sort of thing.

Life doesn't always work out as planned. I have probably done 100 backpack trips in my life and none of them I would judge a failure, but my trips were shorter, 8 days I think was the longest. But there were some rainouts and some where the planned route was revised given difficulty, etc. Anyway, a nice video of your trip. Hope your next trip works out as planned but I would not judge this trip a failure, just a trip that didn't work out as planned.

I've "failed" in the past but don't consider it failing. I'm proud to "turn around" when the call has to be made. In some of those cases it would have worked out to continue (and some cases easier). But I'm more discerning than bold. Fortune only sometimes favors the bold. it favors them when it works out. If it doesn't work out they have to be rescued or worse.
For some reason some who are in good shape think that trumps experience (not saying that's you). In many cases it will tip the odds in their favor. You just have to give the side eye with their attitude. I guess I'm a snob but some people are buffoons. But really - you were doing 30 miles/day in the desert and you don't know why the guys had problems?
