  • At 23, he began billing himself as Tommy Scott and singing with the Senators. He went solo the following year and, after changing his name to Tom Jones, with the help of singer-turned-manager Gordon Mills, he won a contract with Decca.
Jones had his first hit in 1965 with 'It's Not Unusual'. His flamboyance and knock-'em-dead sex appeal helped make him a major star, with four more hits that year.
An avalanche of gold singles and albums were soon to follow, including 'Delilah', 'Help Yourself', 'Love Me Tonight', and Tom Jones in Las Vegas'. For much of the late 1960s, several of his LPs were in the Top ten Charts in both Europe and the United States.
Continuing into the 1970s gold hits came with 'I (Who Have Nothing)', 'She's A Lady' and 'Tom Jones Live at Caesars Palace'. By the end of 1970 Tom had sold over thirty million discs, in all categories around the world.

SO sorry to hear he had TB. That's one disease that weakens the lungs. AND YET, HE HAS THE MOST POWERFUL VOICE IN THE KINGDOM. H's such a nice man, very humble & sweet. Not fair he should lose his wife Linda, but life is like that for all of us. So glad he didn't become a coal miner, it would have been the worlds greatest loss. He's magic, his voice is incomperable. And he still looks good, the years have been kind. Sir Tom was blessed w/ a voice "DIVINE"................

anna Last shut up he was a cheating, whoring, philandering bastard! Awful, selfish man who shirked his responsibilities in marriage and as a father.

He got a model pregnant when he was around 50 and claimed she "tricked" him. He eventually had to pay child support, though tried to get out of it. He has completely ignored his own child to this day. He's a fake and a bastard.

Hi what ever your saying 😉 😊 I agree 💯. My late husband, Alyun, Idris Pounder came from the same Valley as Sir Tom Jones. I had a crushed 😂 on him and my husband couldn't stand 😂 him. He use to say, he's the Village Idiot and shameless for the ladies throwing their undies 😂 to him. Blaaaha. I never got to see Tom Jones in any of his concerts
I'm a Kiwi, and met my husband here in New Zealand 49 years ago. We did go to visit he's home 😊 town. I loved Wales.

So TBC saved Tom Jones from a life working in the mines. A blessing in disguise, not only for Sir Jones, but for everyone. What a voice!
It also saved the mines from Tom Jones. His vocal power would make the mines collapse...

My granch on my dad's side was English and I have an English last name yet when my family came to south Wales they assimalated into the culture sent there children to Welsh speaking schools and because of that I fully consider myself Welsh even though I might not have the last name to prove it.
I'd imagine Tom Jones felt the same way but didn't want people to confuse were he's from as he's probably proud of were he's from so he gave himself a common Welsh last name

Only because you never read his autobiography apparently. He is a proud Welsh man and a proud British citizen, born and bred in Wales as was his father. And "Jones" was a family name on his mother's side as well as a stage name. Lighten up. And personally, I'm sick to death of hearing about this "poor" son who is now a grown man and then some and should have taken care of himself by now instead of trying to milk the situation. Whatever the financial arrangements were at the time, we don't know since nobody is talking but a legal settlement was made. Ask mom where it went and why she raised her son to live on the streets.
