Yes. I remember when this song came out. It was like a dagger in the heart, and the thing is, no matter how much time passes, it’s not enough to even dull the pain much at all. Some pains of the heart just never ever heal.
Such a sad song by Eric Clapton, he wrote it about the death of his four year old son, Conor. It was so tragic, in 1991, Conor died after falling from the 53rd floor window of a New York apartment, belonging to a friend of Conor's mother. After isolating himself for a time, Clapton began working again by writing music for the film Rush (1991) and he dealt with his grief by co-writing this song for the soundtrack with Will Jennings. It's such a beautiful song and when you know the story behind it, it just makes it that much more poignant. Thanks so much for your reaction, guys, take care now.❤

Clapton said he stopped feeling emotional about it and that's why he stopped performing it at all. He started it again around 2020 but the melody is noticeably less melancholy so I wonder if he still feels anything after playing it so much and his son was lost so long ago now

I 've done many open mics, voice and guitar, covers of oldies mostly. A few of my own. And even with them, a few times I've almost come to tears in a song. I can't imagine how he can hold it together doing this live.
Losing a child gives a lot of pain that never goes away. The grief changes, it's easier to bear, but it never goes away. This song has caused many tears for me mostly in a cathartic way. One of the greatest songs of the generation.
I had lost my 6 year old daughter not quite a year before I heard the news of Clapton's son. My heart went out to Eric Clapton and I remember crying about this tragedy for a few days as I was still feeling so much of my own pain. When this song came out it then again, released many tears yet much peace. A beautiful song.

So sorry for your loss, but thanks for sharing your own tearful story.
This song came out about three months after my fiancé was killed by a drunk driver and I credit the emotional release that it gave me the first time I heard it with keeping me from attempting suicide. I was at that point when it came out that I had given up. Clapton has always been one of my favorite artists and this song cemented it for me. As far as I am concerned he saved my life with this song.

That's beautiful, that his song helped you! I hope you also have a support system around to help. Friends and family. I haven't had to suffer anything like that, at least not to a fiance' or girlfriend. I've always been the reclusive type, lived alone. When I was young, my father died after he and his girlfriend were hit by a car, though. After that I had a breakdown. Playing music has been my therapy, like at open mics. And remembering my dad, and how his kindness and strength gave me strength, even just in my memory. Even more when he was around, of course. He was a high school math teacher, and even more, he had a way of spreading enlightenment. He is an old soul. Find whatever support helps. Good luck.
My brother had them play this at my 15 month old nephew's funeral. Enough time has passed that I can listen to it with good memories I have of him, not incredibly sad ones.
Utterly heartbreaking. Clapton can express emotion through both voice and guitar; in this song the guitar does indeed weep 😢
Because this song was so personal to Eric, he never intended it to be recorded. He then agreed to perform it once and only once. He did. You just watched it. He has never performed it since. 😢

When his son died, I was concerned Eric would relapse into addiction and end up dead himself. But like so many times before, he turned his pain into music.
In the other hand, my mom passed the way last July the 06th, 2022, one week before her birthday. I don’t think this kind of pain never goes away, you just learn to live with it. RIP mom. 💔🕊️
Bless your heart...I'm so sorry for the loss of your mom. My mom passed away suddenly at the age of 60, 16 yrs ago...she had always been the center of my world, and my world as I had always known it was no longer here....then I had to adapt to the new norm, not easy...then the new norm becomes the norm w/time. I felt perhaps something was wrong w/me about 5-yrs ago (she had been gone 11-yrs), because if someone was talking about for instance a vacation spot, and if I had taken mom there for one of her b-days, I would chime in about wherever it was of perhaps I had been and enjoyed it, then I'd add "and I took mom there for her b-day"...you could hear in my voice emotions building, and ppl could sense it in my voice, like someone is gonna cry...I'd usually switch gears somehow so the emotions would subside b4 tears...but at her gone 11 yrs and that was still surfacing, I thought maybe something unresolved...and one person said "well grief takes diff time w/diff ppl"...I was like no, I went through all the stages of grief, all that's done...but what I realized was stirring emotions in me in instances, there 11-yrs later, and even now, is I still care for my mom and hold her in my heart as much as I always did when she was here, that hasn't changed...it can still touch my heart, just as this song did George, so I realized 11 yrs ago, that's the way it should be, because when some things of reference to mom DOESN'T touch my heart anymore, I'll feel she's left me too far. Sorry long, but me writing this is maybe it will help you along the way, of what took me a while to figure out. But I'll get told "Oh, u laughed just like your mom", or told I "did something just like my mom."...those are my favorite things to hear, that always makes me so happy, although she's not physically here, I know she's with me in so many ways. Stages of grief takes time, and it's better when that's over and done, but hold tight to all the things you loved and cherished. God bless

I cannot imagine losing one of my children, but it has to be the hardest thing a parent could go through. All of my deepest sympathy goes out to Eric Clapton, and it has for all these years since the accident.
My son was 15 months old when he died in 1985 and 7 years later was a basket case when this was released and heard it on the radio.
Eric Clapton is the only person in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three times.

The first stanza of the song "You would know my name...", using the verb tense, represents himself imagining himself in this fearful and hopeful hypothesis of being where his son would be now (in paradise).
The chorus "I must be strong..." dispels the imaginary and returns to the raw reality that daydreaming is a mere illusion (he can never be in that place).
And the bridge to the end "Then the doors close and there are no more tears in paradise" might suggest that he ended up literally dreaming of what he imagined and wanted so badly for a few seconds and somehow moved on, but didn't get over it, because the chorus returns at the end recalling the fact that he does not belong where his son would be (and because no trauma is overcome, only dealt with in a more or less healthy way).

Such a beautiful, heartbreaking song that I know has helped many (including myself) after great losses. For Eric to be able to perform this time and time again at concerts tells us not only how strong he is after losing his child but that it must be therapy for his broken heart and soul as well. Before I knew the back story, I heard this on the radio returning from my grandmother’s (more like a mom to me) funeral. Every time I hear this, I think of her.
Eric Clapton. He did a sweep at the Grammys got a standing ovation at the music awards. I remember this year. I believe it was five years after his son Connor had passed away. This song always hits me hard.

I had never heard this before, and I like it immediately. Makes me think of All My Love, Robert Plant's tribute to his son, who also died at a very young age.
The video was their feelings and struggles to cope with the loss of a son. How they supported one another thru a massive loss of a child.

Guys, I listened to your reaction again as this song has stayed with me the last couple of days. As always, you both pick up great detail about the artist and song. Eric did go through a major change in the late 80's as he struggled with a serious heroin and alcohol addiction for years and finally got sober one year after Connor was born. As many do, (and Patrick mentioned this) Eric turned to music for healing. The video is from the movie "Rush" - also about drugs. Thank you, thank you again for your heartfelt reactions!🧡🧡

I agree that if watching the video that could mislead a bit from Erics actual perspective , but when these artist write songs even about their own life, they still hope that it reaches us in a way we can relate to it from our own perspective allowing the narrative to fit our particular situation we may be tangled in.

I hope you read this comment. There’s a young guy, a prodigy, who plays electric guitar. You wouldn’t believe the talent this kid has. His name is Miguel Montalban. Incredible ability playing electric guitar. You need to check him out. He plays covers to Dire Straits, Sultans of Swing, Led Zepplin, Stairway to Heaven … Patrick!… and many others. I know most reaction channels react to established, famous artists, but there are a few who do react to new , unknown, ( but not for long), up and coming talent. Even if you don’t devote some time on your channel to him… although he’s more than worth it… check out his videos on your own. He has his own TH-cam channel filled with videos of his incredible ability on the guitar. It seems he is one with his guitar, as if he were making love to it. I know that sounds strange, but it’s the closest I can get to convey how he handles and interacts with it. Amazing young man.

The song is so raw and you here the pain even if you dont know the story. But once you know erics 4 year old son died after a terrible accidental fall from a new york high rise. He wrote this song working through grief and its sounds like from the lyrics.. guilt as well though undeserved. Its a truely heartbreaking song.

His 4 year old son, Conor lept to his death from a highrise apartment shortly before he wrote this song. I clearly remember I was at a gas station filling up when this song came on the radio in 1992. I was instantly transfixed and felt a sense of melencholy, yet I was happy to hear EC's new beautiful song.
