The meaning behind the song is when Eric lost his son, who was 4 1/2 and fell out of a 53rd story window. It occurred just when Eric was coming out of his drug abuse of many years, and wanted to clean himself up after his son was born. He was, at the time, in a good place in life, and couldn’t be more happy being a father. For a long time he didn’t want to be a father because of the lifestyle he was leading. But when he really did have a child he wanted to change and found he liked his new lifestyle. His friends and family were worried that he’d fall right back into abuse. Instead, eventually he wrote a song about it. Today he’s happily married, has more kids.

Because I lost my infant daughter, Michelle week after she was born over 35+ years ago. I think about her every day since. I am getting teared up just typing my words on the keyboard writing to you. I have been married twice and my first wife was pregnant 3 time but sadly she had miscarriages with all 3. We found out that the first one was a boy and the second one was a girl. The third one was too early to find out. We eventually separated and got divorced. I have no children but feel sad when any parent loses a child very young.

Such a tragic story, falling out the window in his moms apartment onto the roof of the building next door. Eric seen all of the emergency vehicles outside of the building and had no idea it was for his son. Theres a video of the story, you should check it out. Sons and daughters are not supposed to predecease their parents, but that is exactly what happened to Eric Clapton. That in itself is so terrible, but to lose his son so tragically at 4 1/2 years old is unimaginable. I hope time has eased the pain somewhat and glad that he has new family around him since this tragedy. Erics voice has never been so beautiful than in this song being sung straight from the heart, containing the pain enough to get through it.
